Packers Mock Draft Monday 8.0

Ross will provide a weekly mock draft using Fanspeak's mock draft simulator, On the Clock.  He will also scour the internet for a few mocks to see who the "experts" have Green Bay taking that week and will provide analysis.

I used Arif Hasan's composite big board linked here (which is a great piece annually to check out during draft season) and fan selected team needs.  In the first round I selected Derek Barnett over TJ Watt and Takkarist McKinley (who Justis actually believes is not on GB's board).  Barnett is one of the best ten players in this draft, so to get him at 29 is a steal.  He might not excel testing wise but he has real flexibility and real football skills that will serve him well immediately in the pros.  That leaves me with Sidney Jones in the second round.  I've now procured the second best pass rusher and the best corner in this draft.  We'll use House and Randall outside while we wait for Jones to be ready to contribute.  I'm ecstatic when another starter, Cooper Kupp, falls to me in round three.  Kupp's pro day 40 yard dash sneaks him inside Thompson's parameters, and he makes up for a perceived lack of speed by running potentially the best routes in this class. Surprise, surprise I ended up with Pocic again.  Ejuan Price is consistently one of my favorite players in this draft and Elijah Hood rounds out the class.  Hood, Montgomery and MIchael are plenty.

National Mocks

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, ESPN (Head to Head)- Marlon Humphrey, CB Alabama, Jordan Willis, EDGE Kansas State, Carlos Henderson, WR Louisiana Tech

I've gotta say, I would be really excited about this haul.  I'm a huge fan of Henderson, Humphrey and Willis fit the bill as a high-end corner and edge haul after the first two rounds are over. Addresses needs with players that aren't reaches.  That's the goal, kids.

Mike Tanier, Bleacher Report- Charles Harris, EDGE Mizzou

I just don't think it's going to happen.  Harris is not athletic enough for Thompson to take him in round one.  He doesn't check all the boxes.  Harris has tremendous ball-get-off and excellent instincts, he's just not the right fit.

Rob Rang, CBS Sports- Gareon Conley, CB Ohio State

Sign me up for this.  I really like Conley as a #1 option at corner and a replacement for Sam Shields.  Snag a pass rusher in round 2 to supplement Fackrell and Elliot, it's party time.

Chad Reuter, NFL.com- TJ Watt EDGE Wisconsin

Watt seems to be so divisive.  I still don't see what the haters see.  I'm completely on board for this.

Walter Football (updated 4/24)- Marlon Humphrey, CB Alabama, Tyus Bowser, EDGE Houston,  Taywan Taylor WR WKU, Jessamen Dunker, G Tennessee State, Joe Williams RB, Utah, Jonathan Ford, S Auburn

Up and down for me here.  Love Humphrey, do not like Bowser.  Think Taywan Taylor is potentially a player that does a lot of the same things guys on their current roster do.  I do like both fifth round selections quite a bit.

I would be real surprised if Barnett is there at 29. I can just see our draft team falling over themselves to get that pick in. Yeah, he would be an excellent pick, but highly unlikely.

1. Perry just got $60 million so that'd be a great pick. 2. No he absolutely is not. They do completely different things well.

Wishful thinking has nothing to do with anything. You draft the player available to you in the draft simulation. He was there I took him.

If you watch the tape with any kind of understanding of pass rush play you'd realize they win now and when Perry was in college in completely different ways. They are extremely dissimilar. To say one is a clone of the other is just wildly inaccurate.

Perry won in college because of his strength and athleticism. Still does. The bull rush is his primary moves and most of the rest of his moves are counter moves from the bull rush.

Barnett wins almost exclusively with flexibility and skill. He has the best bend in this class. It allows him to go full speed around a tackle without losing his balance or slowing down. He also utilizes a spin move that Perry still doesn't have in his arsenal as a "go to".

Perry wins because he's a great athlete. Barnett wins because he's a great football player.

Barnett as a Perry clone is a lazy take based on height weight and position.

Using Matt Millers board, I ended up with this:

1- Reuben Foster
2- Joe Mathis
3- Teez Tabor
4- Howard Wilson
5a- Samson Ebukam
5b- Joe Williams
6- JJ Dielman
7- Dede Westbrook

This draft would be an absolute dream, but it seems pretty unlikely. Fun to play around with though.

Tabor is to slow, the Pack has already cornered the market on slow cornerbacks.

No they don't. They might get beat a lot but none of them are slow in timed speed and that's what you're complaining about with Tabor. Timed speed.

Tabor ran a 4.62 40 at the combine and 4.75 on his pro day, that's slow for a CB by any measure.

At no point did I say Tabor wasn't slow, though Josh Norman and Richard Sherman are about that speed so.....

The point I am making is that Green Bay doesn't have a penchant to take slow corners. Corners currently on the roster:

Hawkins: 4.39 (very fast)
Randall: 4.46 (fast)
Rollins: 4.57 (slightly below average speed, that's why he doesn't play outside)
House: 4.50 (this is average speed for an NFL corner)
Waters: 4.50 (this is average speed for an NFL corner)
Goodson: 4.50 (this is average speed for an NFL corner)
Gunter: 4.69 (this is the only "slow" corner and he might be the best CB on the team)

Richard Sherman ran a 4.56. Josh Norman ran a 4.66. Aj Bouye ran a 4.55. Malcom Butler runs a 4.6+. There is more to playing cornerback than height and speed.

Westbrook and Tabor have terrible attitudes, IMO there's no way Ted would draft them and I don't want them, they also had really bad combine interviews, especuially Westbrook, he may go undrafted.

A recent report says that the Packers are still in the running for Joe Mixon, likely only if he's available in round 2.

TT could trade out of the 1st round for a high 2nd round pick, ahead of Cincinnati. They could take Mixon, and then could either hold position 61, or trade up and take someone like OLB Jordan Willis. I do think the action for the Packers will happen in the 2nd round this year.

hehe... we'll find out soon enough, dobber. I got nothing more than a hunch. I can see him maybe making it through D1. But as soon as you get past that (totally arbitrary) stigma of making him a first round pick, someone will jump at him in D2, I think, and we only need one team to do it.

I get what you've been saying about the backlash, but the only backlash GMs are really going to be much concerned about is from their own fanbase. Personally, I think that everyone is talking now about how Mixon is such a terrible guy (and there may be something to that, of course). But once Mixon is actually selected by "your team," just watch how quickly that fanbase will flip like a switch, and Mixon will morph into "a troubled young kid who's made some mistakes but deserves a second chance."

We shall see.

Barnett is OK. But not over Watt. And TT will not pick S. Jones. He will never take a player with a foot problem. This team has to many defensive openings to draft Mixon. Mixon is a smoke screen. And I'll say a problem child. How could you ever draft a questionable rb with peppers and Shields gone. Cooper Kupp is to slow. I can see a WR being taken. But your chances of getting a DE/elephant there are better. And what about trading some later picks to move up in the 3rd and 4th rounds. TT should not try to stack the practice squad. It will only get raided!

4. Chad Hansen WR.. Jordys Replacement

Technically it was a dilute sample, which can occur as a result of multiple causes, including being over hydrated. However, the NFL, in its infinite wisdom, has a rule that all dilute samples are considered as failed samples.

I would be ecstatic to see TJ Watt and Moreau taken in the first 3 rounds, I just don't see Moreau falling out of the second round.

I think the media is overvaluating Packers need for runningback to take Nixon. His talents are off the charts though, so I could be wrong. Big risk, not a Ted move. Give me Perine in 3 or Hill in 4 instead.

Totally on board with Chad Hansen and Rasul Douglas. It just seems that this draft would be almost too good to be a true story, IMO

If you read some of Walter's non-draft stuff he definitely comes off as a different dude. However, he claims to have some inside knowledge. In reality, he probably has about the same amount of info as most of the mockers.

His Jerk of the Week columns can be really funny, especially the ones about his misadventures at the Philadelphia airport.

1. Tj watt
2. Tankersery or awuzie if lucky
3. keion Adams, biegel or best OLB
4. Anzalone
5. Hill
5. OG
6. Nate Gerry
7. Chad Williams or Brandon Riley.

I do like Brandon Riley for height, speed, and high pointing the ball.

Every year the predictions are way off, but we continue to predict. Expect the unexpected like a qb in the 3rd round or tight end n the 1st. Some prospects will fall like rocks and some unheard of players will be taken early. Anyone who claims with certainty what will occur are kidding themselves and us as well.

I agree. Every year we are all way off. We can't be serious in thinking we know exactly whose gonna be available, when. This draft is uniquely talented particularly at positions of need for the Packers in the early rounds. So it will be interesting to see if there is any credibility to us "experts" this year.

Naturally I wanna say you're gonna be right here.

Ross thanks for the Monday mocks! I don't get to watch film so enjoy your takes as a reality check against me obsessing the measurables. That said, I worry Harris and to some extent McKinnley would be another 2 or 3 yr 4-3 to 3-4 conversion project. With Watt and Biegel being so similar to Matthews, (we know TT moved up for) I figure they be targets at edge.

Here is the dilemma: Peppers is going to drop to the Packers ... The Steelers have already declared they want him. Do you take Peppers or TJ Watt. If TT can work a deal to get back into the top of the 2nd round to grab TJ Watt I would be ALL OVER THAT!!!! maybe give up a 4 or 5 and swap 2nds. The other idea is that Brett Hundley may be the best 2nd string QB behind Garrafolo. His trade value is going to go up if they don't trade him during the Draft watch right before the season starts as he lights up the Preseason (If a starter gets injured) . He was the 2nd best QB coming out of the 2015 Draft behind Marcus Marriotta and ahead of Jameis Winston They can easily get a 2nd or 3rd for Hundley. THe Packers may Darft a QB in the late rounds or sign one as a Priority FA (Peterman, Webb)

More and more draftniks (so take it with a grain of salt) are speculating that TJ Watt doesn't make it to the Packers in round 1. I don't know whether to buy that or not, but I think if he makes it to the Packers, and they pass, that he doesn't last more than a few picks past that.

Garoppolo has trade value because he's won regular season NFL games, and played fairly well. I just don't believe that any team out there would give much more than a 4th for Hundley, if even that. He's done nothing since training camp of his rookie year (that's two seasons ago, now).

I disagree some on the notion that a CB's lack of speed is not very important. It is. It may not be the only factor but I believe its crucial to success. Granted some play faster than their timed 40. But that too is speed! All in all, faster is better.
