Packers Mock Draft Monday 4.0

Ross will provide a weekly mock draft using Fanspeak's mock draft simulator, On the Clock.  He will also scour the internet for a few mocks to see who the "experts" have Green Bay taking that week and will provide analysis.

In this simulation I used Matt Miller from Bleacher Report's updated big board and the fan-voted team needs.  This first round saw teams jump at thinng er positions because of the depth of the EDGE class and select some EDGE with better combine numbers than Tennessee EDGE Derek Barnett.  I am overjoyed.  Barnett is one of the best 5 players in this draft on film and just because he doesn't have elite testing numbers doesn't mean I wouldn't take him in the top 10.  He's good at playing football, which is something that is often lost in this age of 3 cone drills and 40 yard dash times.  After Barnett it's my turn to take advantage of the depth of a class.

I grab the last corner available that I have a first round grade on- Quincy Wilson of Florida.  He and Davon House infuse more talent into a cornerback group that has now garnered so much hatred that it's undoubtedly underrated going in to 2017.  I wasn't married to the idea of drafting a Lang replacement because I personally think Kyle Murphy can do the job just fine.  That said, Dorian Johnson is a mauler and a true guard, something the Packers found success with in Lane Taylor. Brian Hill and Artavis Scott provide weapons for the offense until I make my favorite pick in the draft: Ejuan Price.  There's a chance that because of his size he completely washes out in the NFL.  There's also a chance that he grabs 8-10 sacks his entire career playing passing downs like Elvis Dumervil.  Dumervil was taken 126th overall, don't you forget it.

Mel Kiper- ESPN (Insider)- Dalvin Cook, RB Florida State

This one doesn't bother me as much as McCaffery does.  I happen to think Cook is the best back in this draft and could have an Ezekiel Elliot-type impact on the Packers.  Because of the depth of the EDGE and CB classes, I've been advocating a number of times for a first round "luxury" pick.  Cook would certainly be an intriguing luxury.

Dan Kadar - Mocking the Draft (2 rounds)- Forrest Lamp, G/T Western Kentucky and D'Onta Foreman, RB Texas

I like Lamp as a prospect and would certainly appreciate him as an extremely rich man's version of Daryn Colledge.  With that said, please don't take a guard in the first round.  That's just nonsense.  Also when the general manager allows massive losses on the defensive side of the football so that he can rebuild that side of the ball, don't use the first two picks on offensive players.  One game sample sizes are dumb, but it's still hard to imagine a situation in which Lamp and Foreman could have helped in the loss to Atlanta.

Rob Rang, CBS- Christian McCaffery, RB Stanford

NO NO NO WHY DO YOU PEOPLE KEEP DOING THIS NO

DraftTek, Jersey Al contributing (3 rounds)- Charles Harris, EDGE Mizzou, Chidobe Awuzie, CB Colorado and Wayne Gallman, RB Clemson

Our Editor in Chief Jersey Al made one big mistake here, and that is taking Harris over Tak McKinley.  I read his reasoning and understadn it, but part of McKinley's charm is that his upside as he learns pass rush moves is incredible.  Harris' is basically non-existent.  In most drafts Awuzie would be a late 1st round pick, so his presence in the second round here is fantastic.  Gallman is one in a number of mid round talents that will do just fine replacing Eddie Lacy.

Peter Schrager, Fox Sports- TJ Watt, EDGE Wisconsin

I still love this pick, and I again remind all that I'm not a Wisconsin alum, I'm not from Wisconsin and I have no bias towards anyone who did/is.  Watt is a good scheme fit and has the atheticism to improve from what we already have on film.

Thane Goetz, Pack To The Future- Tak McKinley, EDGE UCLA

I really like the first 3 picks, especially if Quincy Wilson falls to us in the 2nd round.

Harris and Awuzie sounds like a dream come true. Harris is an absolute monster and I think Awuzie is a Hayward clone. This sounds pretty legit to me...

Major jeers to Barnett. His game won't translate to the NFL as well as everyone thinks. Poor athleticism.

As always, I have to take up the challenge and try drafting with the same parameters. First time round I got Mike Williams with the first Packers pick, but the generator glitched, and I had to start again. I noticed in this version, some of the guys I favour drafting later are rated lower, and tend to be there in the final rounds. Price, Asiata, McGuire all fall in that category, so does CB Brendan Langley, who I didn't have room for this time.

1) Edge Charles Harris
2) CB Kevin King
3) WR Juju Smith-Schuster
4) C (OG) Ethan Pocic
5) LB Alex Anzalone
5) Edge Ejuan Price
6) OG Isaac Asiata
7) RB Elijah McGuire

I do have the advantage of drafting all the way to round 7 (Ross only goes to round 5), which in this case is pretty important as two needs (OG, RB) were filled there.

Again, it is worth saying I do not expect a real draft of this quality. In my opinion, picks 3,4,6 should all be gone before the pick where the Packers took them.

I can never seem to decide if taking a CB in round one and pass rusher in two, gets me a better pair than the other way round. It seems to vary.

PS. After typing this in, i went back and tried a 2 round mock with CB first, pass rusher second. That netted me CB Gareon Conley, followed by pass rusher Ryan Anderson (I actually prefer that combo to the one I typed earlier). Jersey Al's (joint) effort looks very good.

Nice draft but..
Deep draft like 2017 means you should trade back with a late pick. A team will move back no more than 6 spots and acquire 2 or 3 more picks in the middle rounds where value and pro bowlers are found. Hope TT feels the same. He's done it before.

not bad, but Asiata will go much higher than that.

After many tilts on Fanspeak, Barnett tends to fall on a alarmingly consistent basis. Not sure why, part is due to the algorithm they use but it can't explain the frequency and depth he drops.

And it really doesn't matter who's big board you use, he tends to almost always be available at 29.

I am thinking Watt might be the better pick because he can probably play any Backer position on the field. You have to like that flexibility.

I usually only pick 4 deep since after that, it's too much of a crap shoot and most of those guys will be depth at best anyway unless you get extremely lucky, which can happen.

I am liking the trend that we can get an edge guy, a corner, a running back and either an OL or DL or second CB in there who are all pretty solid picks. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Who knows, maybe we grab one of the injured CB's who fall in the 3rd or 4th and give them time to get healthy.

It will all be interesting.

Ross, next time you do this, list the 5 top guys available to you at #29 in the first round as well as who you chose hey?

I like turophile's draft except I would rather have watt in round one and I don't like round 3. I wouldn't mind another corner or the fastest inside linebacker there. But I do really like your 7th round pick.

Agreed! Not a fan of JU Ju. To much like Adams for me. 4.55 and being a junior just doesn't help. Need faster and taller outside. I would have preferred he took a shot at sidney jones.

Either Mel Kiper has totally lost his touch or he just never had any. I lean to the latter.

I tried finding this out last week. But I have been hearing lately that Cook is dropping on some teams boards. I am not sure why. But if he fell to GB I would absolutely take him.

I believe I heard on radio this week that he's had a lingering injury that has prevented full workouts. I don't see him lasting to #29. I don't know why you wouldn't take him ahead of McCaffrey.

I also don't think RB is that big of a need for the Packers. Cook would be tempting. Still on the Watt bandwagon.

Are we hoping TJ becomes JJ? If he was 50 to 75% it would be a huge improvement. He seems to have a motor that keeps going which I like. Maybe having a big brother as good as JJ, it'll make him hungrier. I would be happy to see him in a Packer uniform. CMIII in his younger days.

There is no way they should take a running back in the first round. You can find a good running back later on. We need a lot more on defense then a running back. We can find a starting running back in round 3-4.

Did the same setup, here's what I got. Yeah, defense was a priority.

1st - CB Gareon Conley
2nd - DE/OLB Jojo Mathis
3rd - OLB Carl Lawson
4th - G/C Pat Elfein
5th - ILB/OLB Ejuan Price
5th - RB Joe Williams
6th - CB Jeremy Cutrer
7th - ILB Blair Brown

I'm really enamored with Conley and Mathis right now. Getting both would be a dream. I also would consider Baker in the 1st if Conley was gone.
