Packers Make No Waiver Claims: Practice Squad Set

The Packers 53 man roster and 8 man practice squad appear set.

From Bob McGinn:

The #Packers enter the practice week with their 53-man roster exactly the way it was Saturday night. GM Ted Thompson didn't claim anyone.

Meanwhile, the Packers announced their eight man practice squad:

The Green Bay Packers signed eight players to the practice squad. The signings were announced Sunday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Signed to the practice squad were WR Diondre Borel, T/G Ray Dominguez, C Sampson Genus, WR Tori Gurley, QB Graham Harrell, CB Brandian Ross, RB Brandon Saine and WR Chastin West.

No Nick McDonald on the PS. TT thought he was good enough last year to keep him on the 53 all year but apparently not good enough for the PS this year??? Maybe Nick wants to go elsewhere or at least try to go elsewhere for a few days...

They are carrying only eight o-lineman but have two on their PS. That makes me feel a little better but clearly TT didn't think either of them were good enough to protect from the waiver-wire. It makes you wonder if instead of paying Jones it would have been better for them to pay Colledge and keep one of these young rookie WR's on the 53.

McDonald is ineligible for the Practice Squad because he was part of the 53 for more than 9 games.

Incorrect. You have to be active for those games. He never was. He is eligible for the PS.

I'd rather have Colledge than Jones. I think we'll see this year exactly what Colledge meant in pass-pro. But he signed for more than Jones, I believe, so not valid to compare.

It wasn't an either/or between Colledge and Jones. The Packers had the $$$ to sign both. No way the mediocre (and aging) Colledge is worth anywhere near the $7 million per for the next two seasons he got in Arizona---especially with TJ Lang waiting in the wings.

Sitton, on the other hand, was rewarded for being one of the top guards in the league.

Colledge was better than average in pass-pro. Time will tell, but we'll find out if it was a mistake.

I think colledge had no interest in coming back becouse he was pissed at the lack of effort shown in getting a contract extension?

Daryn really wanted to stay. However, it is true that interest was not shown in the $$ he knew he could get as a FA. I don't blame him, but I miss him.

Did any of the Packer cuts get picked up by other clubs?

Also, do we know whether Thompson MADE no waiver claims, or was just not AWARDED any waiver claims?

My "nitpick" of the day is that there was no waiver claim put in for a veteran G/C. Scary lack of depth on the interior of the line.

At least Harrell returns. Back to the air mattress in somebody's basement.

Got back both WR prospects which is good.

Also two o-lineman. Plus Saine provides some insurance at RB.

Even Bob McGinn said the Packers NEED to get another guard. I think this may come back to bite us. EDS was cut by us before, so how good is he? and now he's the only real interior backup... just sayin but I just don't get why we want to be so thin at a position that protects our MVP.

Gurley and West will replace Nelson and Jones next season and leave plenty of $$$$ to re-sign Finley

What? Another fan who is too impressed w/rookie players making a slight impression against opposition THIRD-stringers. No way Gurley and West replace SB hero Nelson or even butterfingers next year.

Finley, on the other hand, may be allowed to walk if he can't stay healthy and wants too much $$$. The Packers have excellent depth at TE and won the SB without the very talented, but injury prone Finley. GB showed who was the most important to lock up by signing Josh Sitton.;))

Well Jones just signed a three year deal, so I would really doubt he goes anywhere. And neither West not Gurley are half the receiver Nelson is. I hope the Packers can resign Nelson, although there are multiple scenarios in which is understandably doesn't happen.

Maybe Ted is just waiting until after the first game to grab a waiver-wire guard/center so he doesn't have to guarantee their contract for the whole year? Hopefully this gamble pays off.

Those were my initial thoughts, but I think he's gambling that Sherrod will be able to move to left guard and then move TJ Lang to center if that emergency situation presented itself.

If the Packers can score a TD with TJ Lang at left tackle (NFC Championship vs Peppers) and Allen Barbre at right tackle then anything is possible. Rodgers and McCarthy will just have to play call around the disadvantage. They've done it before and they can do it again. It may not be pretty, but it can be done. Sherrod at left guard won't be any uglier than TJ Lang at left tackle.

Smarter people than me probably already considered this, but since the Packers would be last in line for any waiver claims, what's the point in even making a waiver claim if you could pick them up as a free agent once they cleared waivers? I'm assuming there is a difference in contract situation in the two scenarios (e.g. you pick up the guy's current contract if you claim him on waivers but are free to negotiate anything if he is a free agent), but I'm not sure. And I agree, waiting until after the first game (and anyone you pick up now is not likely to be activated for the first game anyway) lowers the risk tremendously. I'm pretty sure TT knows what he's doing.

Love this PS!! There must be some seriously good number 4 & 5 WR's in the league for West & Gurley to go unclaimed.

Yes, OL is thin & it wouldn't be surprising to see an interior lineman signed at the expense of an LB, but let's not forget that Sherrod did get a fair amount of snaps at guard and having been really behind learning curve-wise due to lockout, might just progress to a point where he is serviceable by game 4 or 5.

I'll be keeping an eye on CB Josh Gordy, S Anthony Levine, WR Kerry Taylor, and LB Cardia Jackson to see where they end up.

MD Jennings was much better than Levine. Cardia Jackson, meh. I liked Josh Gordy, but he couldn't beat out Bush or Lee. Taylor? So, far none have popped up anywhere.

I only bring up Levine because he was on our practice squad all of last season. I agree with you on Cardia Jackson - he made the plays he needed to but didn't have any outstanding moments during the preseason. You know the whole story of Super Bowl champion Josh Gordy who looks like he needs more development to match his athleticism. Taylor impressed on punt returns and could end up as a return specialist on another team.

Wow, I didn't think we'd be able to keep all 3 receivers, Harrell and Dominguez. Add Saine to that and we have a nice practice squad. Don't know much about Sampson other then he was in camp.

Gotta remember short off season has made this year a bit atypical for other teams to pickup waiver guys. I agree to be concerned on the o-line, but I would think TT knows what he let go and what is out there on the street. Why keep a bad player just because his position is OL. That doesn't explain Bush or Lee though. Can they franchise tag Finnely?

Practice squad players are not ssecure against being picked up by another team. The team has to put them in their 53-man roster though.

3 receivers on the practrice squad is unusual. Unless, Jones and/or Cobb are more injured than I have been led to believe.

It does seem curious, but perhaps the Packers are hedging their bets in case some team comes calling for Gurley or West during the season. At least we'll still have Borel.

Fortunate that West, Gurley and Borel all landed on the PS. At the very least, they should be fighting for Driver's roster spot next season, and if Jordy gets away the three of them could be fighting for two spots.

Most in here seem to think bringing Jordy back is a lock but I'm not so sure. I don't see TT paying Nelson much more than Jones, and Jordy could very will get more somewhere else. Much like Jones this year, Jordy will test the market in 2012 and TT will wait and see how things play out.

I wouldn't expect TT to make any FA moves until after week 1 when the vested vet salaries are no longer guaranteed.
