Packers Make Aaron Rodgers Highest-Paid Player in NFL History

Aaron Rodgers' contract extension is reportedly for $110 million over five years, an average of $22 million per season.

The timing couldn't have been more odd.

On the afternoon following the first round of the NFL Draft when everyone is talking about the newest member of the Green Bay Packers, the organization announced quarterback Aaron Rodgers had signed a long-term contract extension.

Not only did it occur in the midst of the NFL Draft, it happened on a Friday afternoon, a time when teams typically announce news that generates negative publicity.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel...

On top of the two years Rodgers has remaining on his original deal, he'll be under contract with the Packers through 2019. He will be 36 years old at the time.

Full details of Rodgers' deal were not disclosed in terms of the year-by-year breakdown, signing bonus, etc., but Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network did provide a few notable items.

“Aaron is a true professional and a special player,” general manager Ted Thompson said in a release. “He works hard, is humble, and is focused on his actions, on and off the field. He is an excellent teammate and pushes himself and others to be the very best. We are happy to reach an agreement to extend his career with the Packers.”

Rodgers' contract extension comes less than two weeks after the Packers made Clay Matthews the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. Green Bay will have a large portion of their salary cap absorbed by two players, but there's little the Packers could do to avoid it, short of letting them leave in free agency.

Rodgers posted 21,332 passing yards from 2008-12, the most in NFL history by a quarterback in his first five seasons as a starter. In 78 career regular-season starts, he has recorded 28 games with 300-plus passing yards, 43 without an interception and 46 with a 100-plus passer rating. Rodgers was selected to the Pro Bowl three of the past four seasons (2009, 2011-12) and was named the starting quarterback for the NFC squad each of the past two seasons.

“An exciting day for our football program,” head coach Mike McCarthy also said in a relase. “Aaron is an excellent illustration of a Green Bay Packer. It is truly a blessing to witness his continued accomplishments, both on and off the field.”

I think the timing is perfect. Everyone is watching the draft, so everyone is in the NFL mindset. Gives the team and Rodgers a great image in the minds of the millions of viewers.

Exactly. Great way for him to give his contract as little attention as possible. Nice move. And $22M, well, it could have been $24, so what the heck.

Cap number never goes north of ~$21 mil so that's pretty deft cap maneuvering.

Deserves every penny. He's a GREAT player and it's awesome that he's such a likable guy, especially compared to that turd in Chicago.

Are they still paying him $10mil. for the next two years? If so then you're talking about $18 to $19 mil. on average over the seven years, which ain't too bad.

According to Silverstein it averages $18.68 million annually. Which about 2 million less then Flacco. He signed a extension so he is now under contract till he is 36

Mortensen (if I remember correctly) said this is about as team friendly a contract as a contract of this size could be. He pointed out -as a 'for instance' - that in 2014 Flacco will count something crazy like $28-29 mill against the cap, so Baltimore will be looking to restructure in the very near future, whereas... The Pack won't be in that boat, should be a manageable contract.

Next pick Montee Ball (whatever it takes) and we are going to win TWO superbowls in next five years ! !
We can't waste this opportunity.

Lacy was a great move. and The Front office has 9 picks they can play with tomorrow (one is a comp pick) so I'm guessing we'll see more moves tomorrow too.

rodgers get a bazillion $.
tt decides to move all of his picks into the 6th and 7th rds...

coincidence?

this is the future of the team... 2 guys taking 30%+ of the $ surrounded by a bunch of 5,6,7th rdrs and ufa's.

like i said weeks ago - having rodgers and matthews is a blessing AND A CURSE.

How many fourth round picks did we have in 2013 oh wise one?

Answer: 3

In a deep draft like this, fourth round talent is as good as 3rd or even 2nd - dependent upon position. And TT used two of the three for O-lineman and the other for a incredibly talented RB who could have been selected in round 2.

Rodgers's contract was a bargain. In the next few years we'll see bigger and bigger contracts for QB's. How much do you think RG3, Luck and R. Wilson are going to get after their rookie contracts expire? Huh? It is the way the league is trending and ain't a dang thang anyone is going to do to stop it.

Stop being a Debbie Downer and celebrate the fact we just signed one of the three best QBs in the league till he turns 36. God dam Cow, I was just starting to warm up to your occasionally brilliant posts and than you post your old trash again.
