Packers Lead NFL in Workout Bonuses

According to official contract numbers, the Green Bay Packers lead the NFL in workout bonuses during the 2013 season.

The Green Bay Packers will pay more in workout bonuses this season than any other NFL team.

According to Brian McIntyre of Yahoo! Sports, the Packers have the potential of paying $3.673 million in workout bonuses in 2013. The New York Jets are second at $3.355 million.

Seventeen players have the opportunity to make $100,000 or more.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers leads the way with a $500,000 workout bonus, which is the second-largest in the NFL—behind only New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and his $1 million bonus. Five other players—Tramon Williams, Jermichael Finley, Josh Sitton, A.J. Hawk and Jordy Nelson—could make $250,000 or more.

As Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel wrote Monday, the Packers need to include workout bonuses in contracts, or attendance from veteran players would likely be scarce. Working out with personal trainers in warmer climates is much more appealing than returning to Green Bay in early April.

Also, every player—whether a workout bonus is included in their contract or not—will receive $175 for every day they participate in the workouts. As McIntyre points out, full attendance would equal an amount close to $5,000.
