Packers LB Clay Matthews Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

The Packers linebacker was honored after coming up with 2.5 sacks against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A day after being named to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time in his career, Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was honored as the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance this past Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Matthews had 2.5 sacks in the 20-13 win over the Bucs and was part of a unit that allowed just 109 net yards (16 rushing, 93 passing), the fewest allowed by a Packers team since 2006. It was Matthews' 12th career game with two or more sacks and the most in one game by a Packers player this season.

Four of Matthews' six tackles resulted in a loss of yards and another occured at the line of scrimmage for no gain. He also contributed one deflected pass.

Matthews hit double-digit sacks for the fourth time of his career on Sunday, which tied Hall of Famer Reggie White and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila for the most in franchise history.

This week's honor marked the fourth time in his career Matthews has been named Defensive Player of the Week and the first since 2010. His four Defensive Player of the Week Awards tied Charles Woodson for the most in team history.
