Packers Face the Difficult Task of Slowing Down Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers travel to Las Vegas on Monday night to face the Raiders. This will be the first time the Pack will facee wide receiver Davante Adams since GM Brian Gutekunst traded him to the Raiders prior to the 2022 season.

The Packers selected Adams in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The former Fresno State star struggled early in his career to live up to expectations.

But by 2016, Adams blossomed and took his game to another level. He gained 997 yards and scored 12 touchdowns that year and established himself as one of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets.

In 2017, Adams made his first Pro Bowl appearance. He has earned Pro Bowl honors in each of the six seasons since then, five with Green Bay and one with the Raiders. The last three seasons, he was also named All Pro.

Adams set a Packers franchise record for receptions in a season with 115 in 2020 then broke his own record in 2021 when he grabbed 123 passes. He also set a new franchise record for receiving yards that year with 1,553 while grabbing 18 touchdowns.

Adams made himself into one of the best receivers in the game with his hard work and attention to detail. He isn’t the biggest wideout in the league nor is he the fastest. But by running precise routes and disguising his intentions, he was able to gain an advantage on defensive backs trying to cover him almost immediately after the snap of the ball.

In addition, Adams and Rodgers developed outstanding chemistry. A simple look, a nod or a hand signal and the duo could change a play and run a different route. Whenever Rodgers needed a key catch on third down or in the red zone, Adams was his primary target. When they threw a back shoulder pass and Rodgers delivered the ball accurately, it was almost impossible for defenses to prevent a completion.

Adams continued to be productive after being traded to the Raiders. He was reunited with his college quarterback and friend, Derek Carr. Despite a lack of team success and Carr eventually being benched, Adams continued to excel. He caught 100 passes for 1,516 yards and led the league with 14 touchdown catches.

One thing Adams proved last season was that his success was not only due to playing with a Hall of Fame quarterback like Rodgers. “Now people can't say that.” Adams said late last season. “It proved that I am me. A quarterback doesn't make me. I make me. And I can do it consistently at this level.”

Through the first four games of this season, Adams continues to excel. He has 33 catches in four games, which puts him on pace for 140 catches which would be a new career high. And that is despite not having his starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo last week due to injury. Adams also played despite suffering a shoulder injury.

Now, Adams will face the Packers for the first time. Green Bay’s defense will face the challenge of trying to slow down Adams on national television. Green Bay’s top cover corner, Jaire Alexander, will likely be the primary defender assigned to stick with Adams when the Pack plays man coverage.

Like Adams, Alexander has been dealing with injuries. A bad back caused him to miss the Packers two games although Alexander has returned to practice.

Alexander is supremely confident and the battle between Adams and Alexander should be an outstanding game within a game for all to watch on Monday night. The two supremely talented former teammates should have a great battle throughout the game.

Regardless of who plays quarterback for Las Vegas, there is little doubt Adams will get his catches. But can Alexander and the rest of the Packers secondary limit Adams’ big plays and third down conversions and can they keep him out of the end zone?

If the Packers can contain Adams and prevent him from having a big game, they stand a better chance of limiting the Raiders offense and winning the game. Of course, as the Packers well know, slowing down Adams is usually easier said than done.

Kepp him on the sideline with the Packer offense on the field.

Keep pressure on the QB, get some sacks and it will be a moot point.

Yes, Steve. The #1 thing you can do to defend anybody is to deny them the ball. Offenses that are on the sideline don't score as many points as offenses that are on the field. (Yes, that's a fact, I looked it up).

We're having trouble keeping our offense on the field, and a part of that is that we have too many negative plays, and part of that is that we haven't had our guys practicing and playing together enough to forge the kind of consistency we need. Our blocking isn't what we need it to be, yet, but getting Jenkins back is going to help. Getting Tom and Runyan healthier (I heard Runyan was with the rehab group at practice?) is going to help.

IMO, if we've got healthy guys, I'd line up and throw the ball coming out of the tunnel. Let's see if we can protect Love for a few seconds, let's see if he can get the ball to one of our very good skill position players, and let's see how many points we can score. Here's my mantra: If we can protect Love and give him time we'll move the ball and score points. These guys like Jones, Watson, Doubs, Reed, etc. are too good and too dangerous.

It seems to me that Love is better when he takes the snap, sets his platform, and fires. He's made some nice off platform throws, but that's not his strong point. If he's going to take a half a dozen hits in a game, he'd be better off running and sliding than standing in the pocket waiting, so I'd call QB draws and QB keepers, to remind that defense that he can run on you.

The other times....WR screens, slants, underneath crossing patterns, quick hitches and dump offs to the RBs or a jet sweep.....all that stuff gets the ball out of his hand quickly and he doesn't take hits and the ball movers get more opportunities..

The more time the offense is on the field, and the more points they put on the board, the better it is for the defense. If I had LaFleur's ear, my focus would be on having fewer negative plays on offense: Incompletions, sacks, penalties, most runs under 3 yards. We're doing a good job protecting the ball (knock on wood), but too many negative plays are leaving us in bad down-and-distance situations too often.

IMO, we'd focus the offense on improving Love's completion percentage. Right now, it's about 56%, and if he could improve that to about 65%, on a day when he throws 40 passes is going to be about three or four more completions to Watson, Doubs, etc.

I'd spend this month getting the ball out of his hands more quickly and establishing him a little bit as a runner. Focus on getting more completions, even if they're closer to the LOS. That should help us stay on the field, which gives us more opportunities for the youts to show their stuff.

I expect us to look good and to win on MNF against Vegas. If we don't, I'm going to take my shovel and attack my backyard until I feel OK.

"we haven't had our guys practicing and playing together enough to forge the kind of consistency we need."

Even when they've been healthy they don't practice much together. Never heard the words "vet rest" till last season or so. One padded practice one guy, another on the next day. The only times they worked together was on walkthroughs.

That doesn't jell cohesiveness.

The one and only advantage to "vet rest" was that Love got to practice allot with the 1s last season.

"vet rest" is not my idea of a full work week, when you're supposedly healthy.

I think this week might be the first time that all the guys we want to start on MNF line up after a week of practice. Watson missed the first several games, Jones missed time, Jenkins, now Runyan..........

We really need this month where we can practice and play together.

If you haven't heard of veterans getting time off of practice, you weren't paying attention from 2006-2012 when Charles Woodson was on the team.

It was a major- and well-documented- early sticking point between MM and Wood on the subject of expectation to be at every practice and camp. After a while, MM relented and woodson- as well as certain other vets over time- were cut slack and given leeway on the amount of time they had to be at practices and camps.

Many players have enjoyed this 'veteran perk' over the last 15 seasons in green bay.

It shouldn't be on the O-line where practice is as important as playing in a game, for continuity.

Woodson was a DB where practice would help the other players too.

Amateurs practice till they get it right. Pros practice till they can't get it wrong.

Might explain a lot of what's been happening the last 15 years.

I'm not arguing for it, I think as professionals you should be putting the the work. I'm just pointing out that it's nothing new in Green Bay, since the other poster stated he's never seen anything like this until the last year or two.

LH, this has been the strategy I've advocated for since the draft. And I still think it would give this team its best chance to win. It could work even with a less than dominant O line, and if they establish dominance adjusting to take advantage of that is theoretically possible.

I'm not sure which part of this is too complicated for our coaching staff to fathom ...

Look this team cant defend any good receiver so whether its Adams or Jefferson, the Pack suck at it. Stokes is coming back so they probably will pick on him a lot or loud mouth Jairre who is all talk no action and cant tackle and old man in a cross walk with a cane.
I dont know why teams even run against this pourous pass d. Makes no sense

I'm thinking you misspelled your name...Fubeared. I don't recall our pass defense being the issue, pretty sure it's been the run D and mostly that's due to Barry's weak play calling. IMHO

That would be the popular narrative, if you're the kind of guy who buys into narratives.

Adams vs Alexander will be a great competition between outstanding players although I suspect Adams will likely be schemed toward other DBs.

Limiting Adams yardage and scoring threat will be quite a challenge for the D coaches - anxious to see what game planning the D has to limit Adams' impact on the game.

Love the Adams' quote " I make me ".

Let's just hope Raiders are not ass kicking, smash mouth team, like the Lions, then the Pack can win this. The team desperately needs a win after last week. With a healing bye week, they should be healthier and better attitude. The rest of the season.

Other teams have stopped him sufficiently. Our corner strength should be sufficient to help us, remember, they either start a questionable back up or Jimmy G, who doesn’t throw deep, so Adams can be contained and the Ds not stretched vertically. They also look vulnerable against the rush (they didn’t face a real rusher till Mack).

Nixon and the center field D will be tested heavily. This is a game where ideally we want Walker able to help in short coverage. It’s a game where we should be able to rush their passer outside, less so in the middle. It can’t just be Gary. We will have a much better chance if we can stop the run—their run blocking is as bad as ours. I personally think that our offensive weapons as a whole are a lot more of a mismatch through the air than the rest of theirs. Can we give Love time and get out TEs involved as well as the runners?

As long as those swing passes to the runners are beyond the LOS. They seem to get stopped now on the ones behind the LOS cause the blocking that pulls out there or the receivers down field whiff their blocks.

Is Josh Jacobs not on the Raiders anymore, or are most just simply ignoring his run ability and the Packers run Defense. I expect a huge dose of run, and a lot more if they can't contain it. Talk about keeping an Offense off the field. This game has the makings of the Packer Offense getting more bench time than the opponent.

He’s averaging 3 yards per carry. Looks like a lot like Dillon, but their OL has looked just like ours when run blocking.

With 8 first round picks on defense, there shouldn't be many concerns on defense.

I'll go one further.....
With eight 1st round picks on defense, the Green Bay Packers defense should be the talk of all the sports stations, and the jealousy of other teams around the league.

But that's not where we are.

Well...how about we try to use our brain?

It could be Joe Barry, but it also could be the quality of some of those 8 1st round picks.

Critical thinking might tell us, it also could be a combination of both.

But the one thing i know for sure is that, repeatedly drafting defense in the first round for over a decade, is CLEARLY not the answer, on defense or on the offensive side of the ball.

What say you Gutey?
