Packers Daily Links: Trgovac Considered As Broncos Defensive Coordinator

Packers defensive line coach Mike Trgovac is a candidate to become the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos. That and more in today's Daily Links...

A quick weekend spin around the stories making headlines this NFC Championship weekend...

Packers defensive line coach Mike Trgovac is reportedly the candidate of choice for the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator job. Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, "If the Packers lose to Chicago on Sunday, it's expected that the Broncos will send a letter of request to interview Trgovac. That letter could be sent as early as Sunday night.

"If the Packers win, league rules would prevent Denver from even making the request until after the Super Bowl." If the Packers win, will the Broncos be content to wait until after the Super Bowl? It's rare teams show that much patience. We'll see.

Center Scott Wells spoke to Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette about a recent drug-test notification that gained attention in the Wall Street Journal. "It raised eyebrows because Wells had been notified in advance, seemingly breaching the NFL’s drug-test policy, which says players who are selected for in-season testing will be notified on the day of the test and are expected to produce a urine sample almost immediately," writes Demovsky. "The news of Wells’ advance notification prompted the Wall Street Journal reporter to contact several anti-doping officials, who called the procedure concerning." Wells said everything was kosher because the Packers were scheduled for a day off the next day.

Don't be surprised to see higher, shorter, Aussie-style punts from Tim Masthay on Sunday. That's the word from Bob McGinn who talked to Seattle and former Green Bay punter Jon Ryan, an opponent of the Bears last weekend. There's one small issue, though. "We don't want to give up the field-position battle without even trying," Masthay told McGinn. "We don't want the threat of Devin to make us lose field position because you're just trying to hit short punts." By the same token, the Packers don't want Hester taking one to the house either.

Clay Matthews is showing respect for Bears rookie right tackle J'Marcus Webb. "On paper, it definitely looks like a mismatch with him being a seventh-round rookie, but he's a good player," Matthews told Jim Polzin of the Wisconsin State Journal. "I think he's going to hang around here for a while. I'll have my hands full with him."

Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette looks at the futures of the two teams in the NFC Championship game. "There’s one major difference between the NFC North Division rivals who will play for the NFC championship Sunday: One was built for this season out of win-now-or-else desperation, the other for the longer haul of the next three to five years," writes Dougherty.

Fantastic story about the Packers-Bears rivalry at ESPN.com, especially the one about former Packer Matt Bowen describing how he actually peed his bed the night before his first game against them. Bowen was a really good sport about it, and kudos to him for sharing the story.

The Packers secondary has hands like wide receivers finds out Rob Reischel of the Journal Sentinel. "While many defensive backs struggle with their hands, the Packers' group rarely drops the ball," writes Reischel. "So if Bears quarterback Jay Cutler gives Green Bay's secondary some chances Sunday, history says they'll make him pay." With Charles Woodson actually playing wide receiver during his Heisman Trophy season at Michigan, it's not far from the truth.

The Packers and the Bears are "frenemies."

The lowdown on Aaron Rodgers' appearance at Thursday's Brad Paisley concert in Green Bay comes from C.D. Angeli of Tundra Vision.

And Sam Shields is a WR turned CB as well.

Question: Anyone know how many INTs Nick Collins has dropped the last two seasons?
