Packers Daily Links: Ted Thompson Attends USC Pro Day

After attending UCLA's pro day workout two days ago, Thompson attended USC's yesterday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Packers general manager Ted Thompson made another stop on the SoCal pro day circuit on Thursday when he stopped at USC. "Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, Chargers coach Norv Turner and Packers general manager Ted Thompson were among the 75 NFL representatives on hand," according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com. Brandt indicated that tight end Jordan Cameron had a "lights out" positional workout.

The star of the USC show was offensive tackle Tyron Smith, who caught the attention of Brandon Benson of Acme Packing Company. "While pro days are designed to show off each player's best qualities, Smith's USC pro day may have cemented his spot as the top tackle because he weighed in at 310 lbs," writes Benson. "He's had a problem getting over 285 while in college, but he's added weight while maintaining his athleticism." It's doubtful Smith falls to the 32nd spot in the draft, but no one thought Bryan Bulaga would fall to the Packers last year either.

The Packers are considering implementing a computer technology called ICE (Interactive Collaboration and Evaluation) to help them organize information they accumulate on draft prospects as well as their own players and other professional players and teams. "The system fully computerizes a team’s draft and pro scouting boards, and allows almost instant access to everything from a player’s scouting report to his physical testing to his medical report to game videotape," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The system is a product of STATS LLC. The Packers are reportedly just one of about a dozen teams considering using it.

Acme Packing Company picks up the conversation about the possibility of Matt Flynn being traded, piggybacking on thoughts from Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network. "They do need to have a backup QB, and I'm not sure they could get enough value in return to take a drop on the depth chart from Flynn to QB Graham Harrell," writes Brandon Benson. "But this is probably the time to trade Flynn. If there is no franchise tag in the future (which is a possibility) then they might be in a situation after 2011 where he can leave as an unrestricted free agent." If Flynn does leave via free agency and there are still compensatory draft choices in place under a new collective bargaining agreement, the Packers can still get compensation in return, however.

Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette thinks the Packers will use a draft choice on a defensive lineman with both Cullen Jenkins and Johnny Jolly gone next season. "One of several defensive ends possibly on their radar with their first-round pick, No. 32 overall, is Ohio State’s Cameron Heyward, who held his campus workout Wednesday," writes Dougherty. "It was an important workout for Heyward because he was recovering from surgery on his elbow at the NFL scouting combine a month ago and essentially didn’t work out, performing only the vertical jump. It’s unclear whether Heyward’s performance Wednesday was enough to affect whatever opinion a scout had on him going in." If you'll remember back to February, we posted an article here at Cheesehead TV surveying internet mock drafts and found that Heyward's name showed up more than any other prospect associated with the Packers' first-round draft pick.

Thomas Hobbes of AllGreenBayPackers.com looks at past Packers draft choices at the offensive tackle position and lists USC's Tyron Smith and East Carolina's Willie Smith as fitting the Green Bay prototype.

The Packers are reportedly "showing interest" in Yale tight end Chris Blohm. As usual, there's no indication as to what showing interest means. But Blohm did have an impressive showing in the 225-pound bench press at his pro day that would have bettered all the tight ends at the Combine.

Pictures of Aaron Rodgers at Disneyland are at Total Packers.

A writer at Bleacher Report notices that ESPN's Todd McShay predicts the Packers to draft Miami defensive lineman Allen Bailey in the second round. I really question McShay's expertise if he thinks the Bailey is suited to a 3-4 defense.

From 2007-2010 the top performers in the bench press at the NFL Combine is a list of absolute nobody's. Actually that's not quite true, Jake Long is the only somebody out of all of those guys, but he has short arms.

I thought Rodgers went to Disney World in Orlando not Disneyland.
