Packers Daily Links: Shareholders Meeting Scheduled For July 28

In addition, the annual Family Night Scrimmage has been set for Saturday August 6 depending on the labor negotiations. That and more in today's Daily Links...

The Packers set the dates of several annual events yesterday. "The team announced Tuesday that the annual Shareholders Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 28, rain or shine and whether the NFL lockout is over or not," writes Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. Further information will be sent to shareholders along with their proxies in June.

The current NFL lockout won't affect the Shareholders Meeting, but it may affect future Packers events. "While the shareholders meeting will take place without a labor agreement, the fates of the first day of training camp and the annual Family Night Scrimmage aren’t as certain," writes Bill Huber of Packer Report. "Family Night is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6, the team announced. Ticket information was not announced because of the labor dispute. Based on that date and that the shareholders meeting typically is held two days before the start of training camp, the Packers’ first practice unofficially will be held on Saturday, July 30." Information on ticket sales will be released when progress is made on a new CBA.

The annual Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer also won't be affected by the lockout. "The eighth annual Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer is set for Friday, July 29," according to the Packers official website. "The motorcycle ride and post-ride tailgate party has raised more than $450,000 for cancer-related causes. Registration and pledge forms are available online at www.cruiseforcancer.org." The Packers 5K Run at Lambeau Field was scheduled for Saturday July 30 at 10:00 a.m.

Running back Brandon Jackson spoke further with Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press-Gazette on top of yesterday's feature article. The free agent talked a little more about his offseason workout regimen and the lockout. "We have a nice 24-hour gym here," Jackson said of his hometown in Mississippi. "They don’t have all the equipment that I need, but they have most of it. That’s what some guys are harping over because they don’t have the necessary equipment to train the right way. It’s hard to go off and train somewhere else and get the proper training when you don’t  have the proper equipment back in your hometown. That’s what a lot of guys dislike about the lockout." Jackson also spoke about a town festival honoring him after the Super Bowl victory.

Linebacker Clay Matthews was honored as the Coca-Cola Sports Personality of the Year at the Rochester (N.Y.) Press-Radio Club Day Champions Dinner last night. Prior to the event he spoke to Democrat and Chronicle writer Kevin Oklobzija and took a little bit of a pot shot at the nearby Buffalo Bills who drafted fellow outside linebacker Aaron Maybin before Matthews in the 2009 NFL Draft. "That's always the reason we play this game, for overall team success," said Matthews. "You guys got Aaron Maybin, so go ahead and enjoy that."

Clay Matthews ranked no. 5 in ESPN.com's power rankings of the overall best defensive players in the NFL. "Matthews also received a wide range of votes, finishing No. 5 despite three ballots that placed him No. 2, including mine," writes NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert. "Most of us considered Ware the top pass-rusher a few months ago, but a few believe Matthews is the better all-around player from the 3-4 outside linebacker position." Charles Woodson ranked no. 12.

On the topic of a new-look offense in 2011, Chad Toporski of AllGreenBayPackers.com considers the possibilities. "The change in personnel should prove to be the biggest factor in how McCarthy will operate the offense," writes Toporski. "In the 2011 NFL Draft, Green Bay used its top three picks on players who could be expected to contribute right away: OT Derrick Sherrod, WR Randall Cobb, and RB Alex Green. While these three might be considered potential replacements for players lost through free agency, they will each bring something new to the table, and McCarthy will look to capitalize on those strengths."

The future of tight end Jermichael Finley in Green Bay is written about by Mike Davidsen of Green Bay Packer Nation. "At first thought, letting Finley walk next offseason isn't even an option," writes Davidsen. "The offense desperately missed Finley's big frame in the red zone in 2010. It's not often that you stumble across a tight end with his receiver-like athleticism. But, Finley's injury-riddled track record gives Ted Thompson good reason to see how 2011 plays out."

Playerpress asks whether the Packers should be concerned about their running backs. "The club did address the situation somewhat in the recent draft, by taking Alex Green out of Hawaii with the 96th pick overall," according to the article. "As for their present running backs, Ryan Grant is set to return from injury and James Starks could be ready to breakout this season. There are question marks about Dimitri Nance and Brandon Jackson though."

Second-round draft choice Randall Cobb is interviewed for an article at Packer Report (subscription required).

There's also an article about new running backs coach Jerry Fontenot at Packer Report (sub also required).

Woodson being ranked the #12 defender in the league is laughable.

If there is no agreement by July show up to the owners meeting and let Murphy know what you think.
