Packers Daily Links: Packers Sign Rivera To Practice Squad

News that the Packers signed linebacker Mike Rivera to their practice squad highlights our daily look at the world of Green Bay football...

The Green Bay Packers signed linebacker Mike Rivera to the practice squad. "Rivera (6-foot-2, 252 pounds) was signed by Chicago as an undrafted free agent in 2009 but spent the season on the Titans’ practice squad," writes Bill Huber of Packer Report. "He failed to make the roster this summer." Rivera is about an inch shorter than what the Packers prefer out of their outside linebackers but seeing as they're searching the bottom of the scrap-heap, they're not in a position to be picky. Linebacker Johnny Robinson was released to make room for Rivera.

Information on the other players the Packers tried out is brought to you by Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Fourth quarter production has been extremely lacking for the Packers this season. How bad? "One touchdown. No field goals. Three penalties. Two lost fumbles. And one interception," writes Lori Nickel of the Journal Sentinel. Nickel touches on a lot of the same things Trent Dilfer did yesterday in his attention-getting video on ESPN.com.

The Packers defense will struggle without Clay Matthews. That's the word from Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette. "If Matthews can’t play this week, the Packers won’t have an outside rusher who commands double teams," writes Dougherty. "Miami will assume it can block Jones, Frank Zombo and Poppinga with tackles Jake Long and Vernon Carey. That in turn will leave more options for doubling the interior rushers." Matthews has said he's day-to-day, but it's still unknown whether he'll be available for this weekend's game against Miami.

Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette makes the case that the Packers are wasting the services of wide receiver Greg Jennings. "Jennings is on pace to catch 45 passes for 586 yards, which would be his worst pro season," writes Vandermause. Jennings has declined to talk to the media recently, which indicates he could be frustrated. I think it's only a matter of time until he gets more involved. Aaron Rodgers has tried to target Jennings several times where the result has been an incompletion. Once they start completing some of those passes, Jennings' production will rise. A similar post is written by Michael Rodney at Packer Update.

The goal-line offensive calls are lamented by "Jersey" Al Bracco. "In big moments [Mike McCarthy] plays it close to the vest," writes Bracco. "Only if that doesn’t work, does he venture out of his box. That fosters what then appears as a bad sense of timing." That being said, the Packers have been very productive in the redzone this season.

More offensive struggles are brought to light by Brandon Benson of Acme Packing Company. "It was really frustrating watching them get to within 3rd and 1 or 2 yards to go, and failing to convert," writes Benson. "I counted that it happened 4 times during the game, and overall they were 2 for 13 on 3rd down. It hadn't been a problem going into this game, and neither had dropped passes, but both completely threw the offense out of any momentum they might have been building."

Monty McMahon of Total Packers argues that acquiring Marshawn Lynch may not have helped the Packers.

The Sporting News says to keep an eye out for tight end Andrew Quarless from a fantasy football perspective.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson is the player pegged for Tuesdays with Wilde by Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.

"the Packers are wasting the services of wide receiver Greg Jennings."

Tell me about it! He's my #2 WR, from this point forward he's benched for Malcom Floyd (hurts me more than it hurts you Greg), until he starts acting(yes, he's drooped some catchable balls guys)/being targeted like an 'elite' WR.

I sure hope Dougherty didn't stay up all night to figure this out .....

Per Mike Lombardi ..... “When Clay Matthews left for the Packers, so did their ability to stop the Redskins. If he cannot play next week, there has to be reason for concern.”

Say the obvious ...... What a sweet job to have.

When was Robinson signed to the PS, and whom did he replace?

Not listed in Transactions. And not on the official roster at the Packers site.

I don't know anything about him, but if the Cowboys don't want him, why should the Packers?

That's possibly an over-simplistic take on the situation, though.

You very well might be right. Perhaps our need is simply greater. Why would the Vikings sign Frank Walker??

That was me giving you a cyber hug.

I'd be mighty obliged if you returned the favor, as I could use one too (strictly hetero Bro)! But damn, that hurts if it's true.

How bout a group cyber hug--ya know the man kind where we sorta pat each other on the back? Seriously, that's an f'ing blow. Never thought for a minute it's be 3-6 weeks (maybe 6), but the season?? On a fricking tackle after a fumble?? Damn.

IMO against the Redskins the defense struggled to a degree that Mathews was standing on the side line, but due to the Packers offense struggling going 3 and outs at the same time did no favors for the defense as far as time of possession and field position.

I'm not convinced that Mathews injury was the only reason the defense struggled the last part of that game.

MM with the lead should have run the ball more, eating up the clock with nice long offensive drives, even if we don't score, it keeps your defense off the field and takes away valuable time.

Brian, I was talking about play calling on goal line offense (inside the 3yd line)specifically, not the more encompassing "red zone offense."
