Packers Daily Links: Packers Sign Grant Cook

According to the player's own Twitter account, the Packers have signed the rookie offensive lineman from Arkansas. That and more in today's Daily Links...

If the player himself is to be believed, the Green Bay Packers have signed Arkansas offensive lineman Grant Cook, a player who received a tryout at this past weekend's rookie orientation camp. Cook, through an unverified account, tweeted the following...

As for corroboration, this tweet from fellow Packers offensive lineman and another Arkansas alum, Ray Dominguez, will have to suffice. Nothing is official, however, until announced by the team...

With rookie orientation camp now complete, the Packers have a few other choices to make if they want to sign any other tryout players. "A total of 29 tryout players practiced this weekend," writes Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "There are a total of 86 players listed on the Packers’ roster, meaning they have room for four more players under the NFL’s new 90-man offseason roster rule." Head coach Mike McCarthy is quoted as saying on Sunday the Packers could sign players in the next day or so. It bears watching whether the Packers only sign three or less tryout players and leave a roster spot open for a free agent such as running back Ryan Grant.

An update on the status of three players who ended last season on injured reserve came from Mike McCarthy on Sunday. The news was positive regarding running back Alex Green and offensive lineman Derek Sherrod but not as good for tight end Andrew Quarless. "Alex looks great," McCarthy is quoted as saying in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I think it's definitely going to be one of those situations where we're going to be cautious with him. And Derek Sherrod is really progressing, so I'm hopeful that both Alex and Derek will be ready by training camp. And Andrew, just from a timetable standpoint, is a question mark." Although a torn ACL is the official word on Quarless, I would hazard to speculate his injury was more severe than just that, perhaps multiple torn ligaments. The timeframe of his injury, which occurred late last season, probably isn't helping him get ready for the start of the 2012 season either.

More on the injured players comes from ESPNWisconsin.com, the Press-Gazette and PackersNews.com.

Mike McCarthy also commented on the two suspended defensive linemen Tony Hargrove and Mike Neal. "Mike McCarthy wouldn’t say what the future holds for defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, but the Green Bay Packers coach did acknowledge that both Hargrove and Mike Neal will be challenged to see meaningful practice and preseason reps because of their impending suspensions," writes Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com. McCarthy didn't elaborate on their situations, in part because Hargrove's situation is still playing itself out in regards to his potential appeal.

The background of fifth-round draft choice Terrell Manning is analyzed in depth by Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette. "The Green Bay Packers’ rookie linebacker was raised in a four-bedroom, two-bathroom mobile home with his parents and seven siblings in Laurinburg, N.C," writes Dougherty. "His mother and stepfather still live there with his four brothers plus two young cousins adopted into the family." Manning considers his family part of the reason he left North Carolina State after his junior season.

Rookie cornerback Casey Hayward, meanwhile, is profiled in a feature article by Lori Nickel of the Journal Sentinel. "Making his first trip to Wisconsin, the Perry, Ga., native touched down in Titletown and was excited just to see Packers fans on his flight wearing their World Champion hats," writes Nickel. "He said it put all the work and weeks of anticipation into the clearest focus." Hayward said he's excited to start learning from the veterans on the team.

Mike McCarthy was pleased with the final practice of the rookie camp on Sunday.

A Michigan senator wants the Packers to play the Detroit Lions in game staged in the Upper Peninsula. I'd love it too, but there is no stadium capable of handling an NFL-sized crowd in the U.P.

Former Packers fullback William Henderson is reportedly opening a frozen yogurt franchise in Whitefish Bay, Wis.

Running backs Alex Green and Brandon Saine are featured in an article at Packer Report.

A few additional quotes from Mike McCarthy are provided at JSOnline including a comment on the crowded wide receiver position.
