Packers Daily Links: No Workouts Planned Before Ring Ceremony

Even though much of the team is getting together, no practice are scheduled before next Thursday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

The Greg Jennings Celebrity Golf Tournament takes place today at Merrill Hills Country Club in Waukesha, Wis. along with its post-party including silent auction tonight to raise funds for the Greg Jennings Foundation. Meanwhile, the Vince Lombardi Golf Classic Gala happens tonight at the North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls, Wis. to raise money for cancer research.

With so many players in the area for the Greg Jennings Celebrity Golf Tournament this weekend, one might guess that they'll get together for a player-organized practice, although that does not appear to be the case. "Packer Report contacted several agents on Thursday evening," writes Bill Huber. "Of the five who replied, none of them had any knowledge of any workouts scheduled between Jennings’ fund-raiser and the ring ceremony." As quarterback Aaron Rodgers mentioned during the Milwaukee Brewers broadcast last night, the players will work out eventually, but only if the lockout persists. And that doesn't mean he's giving into ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi's opinion. It appears to be more of a long-range plan at this point.

A guest column penned by the family of Vince Lombardi appeared in the Green Bay Press-Gazette as a follow-up to a column written about a caretaker of Lombardi's grave site. "A representative from the Mount Olivet Cemetery contacted us and expressed his exasperation over the initial column (he was not aware of the follow-up article) and assured us that he has never observed the gravesite in any state of disrepair during his 37 years on the staff," according to the column.

Traffic around Lambeau Field will be disrupted for the Kenny Chesney concert occurring tomorrow. "On the Ashwaubenon side of things, streets will be pretty much the same as they are on game day," writes Paul Srubas of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Oneida Street and Armed Forces Drive will close at 3 p.m. Ridge Road will have the cones installed to slow traffic in both directions, and there'll be the usual drop-off zone on the east side of Ridge Road, said Cmdr. Kris Vervaeren of the Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety." Beer sales will end at 9:30 p.m. inside the stadium.

Former Packers cornerback Doug Evans, who played on the Super Bowl XXXI winning team, was interviewed for an article at the Packers official website and expressed enthusiasm for fellow Louisiana corner Tramon Williams. “Sometimes the long road is the best road,” Evans said. “I’m definitely proud of him as another guy from Tech. He has worked his way up and proven himself to be a great player. Sometimes when that’s the way you get started, there isn’t anything that can stop you.” Evans works with high school football players around Shreveport, La. today.

Tramon Williams is named as the most underrated player in the NFL, according to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports. "Coverage is key now," writes Prisco. "That's why Williams is underrated and why (Troy) Polamalu is overrated." I'm not sure Polamalu is overrated, but Williams definitely didn't get the praise he deserved last season.

The Packers are listed as a team affected by the NFL lockout by John Czarnecki of Fox Sports. "This whole lockout is messing with how the Packers play football," writes Czarnecki. "It has stopped their personnel department from signing rookie free agents, and no coach likes working in the offseason more than Mike McCarthy. He has always had a young team in Green Bay, and he hates missing all this prep work for the season in order to get his rookies and first-year players up to speed. Yes, Aaron Rodgers is a top-five quarterback these days, but don’t forget that he’s a product of McCarthy’s detailed system. I say the Packers don’t repeat if camp starts in September." I'd like to know why other teams are in better shape than the Packers if camp starts in September, because I'm not sure I understand Czarnecki's reasoning.

Aaron Rodgers is ranked as the no. 1 rated fantasy quarterback by Joe Fortenbaugh of the National Football Post. "Finished both 2009 and 2010 as the fantasy world’s highest scoring quarterback," writes Fortenbaugh. "With a loaded arsenal and average (at best) running game, we don’t see anything changing this season." Greg Jennings is rated as the no. 6 fantasy wide receiver.

Matt Flynn is named as a backup quarterback ready to start in the future by Bucky Brooks of NFL.com.

I missed this a couple days ago, but offensive lineman T.J. Lang threw out the first pitch at a Green Bay Bullfrogs college summer league baseball game.

Video: Perhaps more interestingly from that Bullfrogs game is that they retired the #4 in honor of Brett Favre in a publicity stunt...
