Max Ginsberg of the blog Purple Pants, Green Jersey chooses to look at the Packers' recent acquisitions of two linebackers in a different light. "The fact that Green Bay did not add any defensive lineman to their roster may be good news for the return of injured linemen Cullen Jenkins (calf) and Ryan Pickett (ankle)," writes Ginsberg. "Both players are unlikely to fully participate in practice this week, and their status for Sunday’s game against the Jets remains uncertain. However, given the multitude of Packers players on injured reserve (9), how the Packers view good news lately depends on whether or not a player will be able to return this season. In Jenkins’ and Pickett’s cases, their return should be sooner rather than later." The Packers have more depth along the defensive line than meets the eye. Michael Montgomery was healthy and could have participated in the Vikings game, but he was not on the 45-man active roster. Whether or not Montgomery is the answer to the Packers' woes is another story, but they do have some depth.

A scouting report on the new linebackers is supplied by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He can meet a block and hold the point," said a scout about Diyral Briggs. "I don’t think he re-sets the line of scrimmage. He’s experienced in the defense so it should be a pretty seamless transition. I don’t think his ceiling is high." McGinn thinks the Packers' empty roster spot will be filled by either Al Harris or Atari Bigby. Meanwhile, Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that the Packers were working on signing yet another player. We can only sit and wait to find out the direction the Packers go.

Tackle Chad Clifton is featured in an article by Lori Nickel of the Journal Sentinel. His solid play over the past couple weeks is chronicled. "In back-to-back losses to Miami and Washington, Clifton still played well," writes Nickel. "He shut down Redskins linebacker Andre Carter. Against Miami, Clifton withstood the rush so well from Cameron Wake that the outside linebacker had to go to the other side because he wasn't getting anywhere with Clifton. Against Detroit, Clifton neutralized Kyle Vanden Bosch." It's hard to argue with Clifton's improving play over the past several weeks.

The friendship of Ohio State alums A.J. Hawk and Nick Mangold is related by Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. "They grew up less than five miles apart in a small town near Dayton, lived together for four years at Ohio State, became first-round draft picks in 2006 and served as groomsmen in each other's weddings. Their parents are friends, too, and occasionally bump into each other around Centerville," writes Cimini. A good read.

James Jones' solid play against the Vikings is recounted by Mike Spofford of the Packers official website, saying Jones got a little bit of redemption. "Therein lies the rub with Jones," writes Spofford on Packers.com. "While it’s difficult to stay highly productive on a regular basis in an offense that features so many quality skill players – just ask Jennings, who had a streak of three games with two receptions each earlier this season, before catching six passes each of the last two contests – it’s making standout mistakes that can hold a player back and lead to such up-and-down evaluations." The challenge for Jones will be to stay consistent the rest of the season.

The approach to team-building by the Packers and the Jets is contrasted by Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette. "There probably aren’t two NFL teams that conduct business more differently than the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets," writes Dougherty.
