Clay Matthews will win the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week award reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Matthews became the first player to record consecutive three-sack games on Sunday," writes Demovsky. "He had three in Sunday’s 34-7 victory over the Buffalo Bills after posting three in the opener at Philadelphia. With six sacks in two games, he’s more than halfway to his impressive rookie season total of 10 last year." It's a no-brainer to honor Matthews after he easily could have won the award the previous week.

Matthews followed up his performance on Sunday with an interview with respected NFL columnist Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. "I think it's well known that quarterbacks don't like to be hit, they want to sit back in the pocket, get hot and make throws," Matthews told Farmer. "As a pass rusher, you want to get in their face early and often. Get a few hits on them and get them off their game." It's worth noting that the two quarterbacks the Packers faced so far will not have started the following week due to either injury or ineffectiveness.

Matthews also made the list as one of the five most valuable players of Week 2 of the NFL season on the Shutdown Corner blog at Yahoo Sports.

The decision by Ted Thompson to re-sign Chad Clifton as a free agent and subsequently draft Bryan Bulaga is defended by Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "He did the contract on March 6 while dealing with a weak free-agent market and the draft still seven weeks away," writes Dougherty. "There’s a saying in the NFL that the hardest time to find a quarterback is when you need one, and that might apply to other premium positions as well. You don’t want to go into the draft boxed into finding a starting left tackle, especially selecting at only No. 23 overall. Everyone in the league would know you need one, so you’re vulnerable to the machinations of the draft. Will teams leap-frog you for the tackle you like? You can move up, but at what cost?" No complaints here. Thompson did the right thing.

Interviews with the assistant coaches are provided by Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Comments on rookie C.J. Wilson, seeing his first regular season action, are provided by defensive line coach Mike Trgovac. "I thought C.J. did an outstanding job, a real nice job yesterday," said Trgovac. "Got some good pressure on the quarterback. On the one pressure that he had, he was the singled up guy, they doubled Jarius on that, so he did a good job of moving -- we always talk about the single guy winning. I think he continues to grow as a football player. I like what I see out of him." Some insight into the play of linebacker Brad Jones appears as well. Expect scrutiny to intensify on Jones until he gets a sack of his own.

Jarrett Bush is featured in an article by Lori Nickel at the Journal Sentinel. "I think I'm very valuable," Bush is quoted as saying. "I can do anything, and I can do it well. I'm a workhorse a little bit. They can put me on special teams, nickel, corner, dime, safety. I can be an all-around utility guy for the team. Wherever they need me, I can plug in." So far this season, Bush has been very reliable on special teams and the dime back on defense. It's only two games, but he hasn't had a penalty so far. As long as Bush can stay away from penalties, he can be a contributing member of the Packers.

Trade rumors about Marshawn Lynch are reportedly intensifying according to Allen Wilson of the Buffalo News. "From the Packers' perspective, they can wait to see if Brandon Jackson improves as Ryan Grant's successor," writes Wilson. "Also, General Manager Ted Thompson is not big on making trades of any kind. Everyone in Green Bay knows Hawk isn't happy with his playing time and would be open to a trade. But at $4 million per year, would the Bills be willing to take on his salary knowing Paul Posluszny will be back soon?" Probably the bigger piece of the puzzle is Hawk's $10 million salary next season.

Rationale for not having Brandon Jackson shoulder the load in the run game comes from Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin. "[Head coach Mike] McCarthy said this week that he won’t be making Jackson the primary ballcarrier, neither Monday night against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, nor beyond that game. His reasoning: Partly because Jackson is still valuable as a third-down back, and partly because he’s not sure Jackson, who has missed 11 games over the past three seasons with injury or illness, can handle the toll physically." Jackson was not on the field for all third downs against the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday. Based upon his past history, Jackson needs to be on the field on more third downs.

Calls for patience with Jackson come from Austin Auch of Bitter Border Battle. "Jackson was never given that chance by having to split carries with Kuhn," writes Auch. "He was never given the opportunity to get a rhythm going."

Debate on at least one Packers message board centers on Morgan Burnett and whether he's "afraid to hit." Over at Packer Forum a poster with the username packerbob writes, "So Burnett is our strong safety. A passive, meek, timid and soft player who likes to avoid contact. I know he made an interception on Sunday and some might say he made a good hit. I disagree. He didn't blow up the receiver. It was a wrap up tackle from behind. His problem is when he plays near the line of scrimmage he wants no part of taking on a running back. I watched him closely and saw him avoid contact on several occasions. He ran out of the way of Lynch rather then trying to meet him head on." Although Burnett may be tentative, I would disagree with him being meek or timid. He's certainly no Troy Polamalu, but he met Lynch at the line of scrimmage for a tackle of no gain on Sunday, which flies in the face of accusations of being meek.

F.G. Union of Meat Packers Union has noticed some stellar play from Nick Barnett. "Barnett has also been playing pretty damned good this season, too," according to Union. "The Vampire in the Middle pulled out a new move on Sunday. Did you see it, dear readers? The bow and arrow. He must be a deer-hunter."

The upcoming game against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football is previewed by Bart Winkler at the Bucky Channel. "If you're Green Bay, while a loss doesn't devastate you this is still a game that you'd probably need to win if you're really going to be legit contenders this season," writes Winkler. "The Bears are surprising at 2-0, and you know they'll be giving the Packers nothing but their best especially in front of a jacked up home crowd. I'm going to say that the Packers will be able to pull this one out, but if this game wasn't decided until the games' final minutes that wouldn't surprise me at all. Should be a fun one.
