Packers Daily Links: Green Bay Works Out Tyrell Sutton, Others

The Packers worked out six players in for workouts on Tuesday, including running back Tyrell Sutton, the former Packer who they cut in training camp in 2009. "Tyrell Sutton, a 5-8, 213-pound third-year pro, was in town to work out in front of team personnel department officials," writes Tom Silverstein at JSOnline. "Sutton was released by the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 3 and has been out of football since." With recent injuries to both James Starks and Brandon Saine, the Packers are likely looking at players they can sign in a pinch. Seeing as both Starks and Saine could be back this week, it's not likely they'll actually sign someone unless another injury or setback occurs.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was again asked to comment on his friend, Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun, who allegedly tested positive for a banned substance and could face a 50-game suspension. Braun believes he'll be exonerated. “I 100 percent support Ryan and believe in him and it’s not going to affect our friendship in the least," Rodgers said on his weekly interview on the ESPN Radio affiliates in Madison and Milwaukee. "I’m 100 percent supporting him and behind him and believe in everything that he says.”
Nineteen different Packers have scored touchdowns this season, a franchise record for a single season. "Twenty-one New England Patriots scored in 2007, tying several others for the NFL record, according the Elias Sports Bureau," writes Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Can the Packers tie or break the record? I wouldn't say it's likely, but it's possible. There's very few players left on offense who haven't scored and that's where most of the scoring occurs. If the Packers do break the record, they would have to get an assist from the defense or special teams.

Linebacker Robert Francois is featured in an article by Fox Sports. "Francois, an undrafted second-year player with only one start and no impactful plays to his credit before this season, has come up with two interceptions and a forced fumble in the last 2 1/2 games since replacing injured A.J. Hawk," according to the article. The consistency isn't quite there yet, he's missed several tackles, but the playmaking ability has more than made up for it so far.

The Packers should make the effort to go undefeated this season, according to Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "The Packers need to enter the playoffs with a full head of steam, which is best accomplished by playing to win against the Bears and Lions," writes Vandermause. I would say there is a need to keep players sharp and on task, which means preparing them to start and win every week. I wouldn't say that means playing Aaron Rodgers in the fourth quarter of a game against Detroit if the score is close. Matt Flynn, for example, can play to win too.
The case is made that the Packers will need Greg Jennings in the postseason by Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette. I don't think many people would disagree with that. That's why he'll get nearly a month's rest before the next Packers game that really, really means something.

And the guy from the WSJ throws out two stats to back up Honda claim? I am a believer in point differential, but I could not care less about yardage stats. How do we stack up in something important like... Say... Turn over differential? I bet if a guy wanted to he could find plenty of stats to argue the opposite.

It's a ridiculous point. If you look at yardage and sacks and such only, you would think we lost most games this year. But, then you look at the score and it tells a totally different story. When half your points come off turnovers you play with a lot of short fields. I would have thought it was a good thing to have less yards, but more points than your opponent. But, you only see that when you actually watch the games.

IMHO there are two definitive stats.
Turnover differential correlates the best with single-game wins.
Passer rating differential correlates the best with season wins (SB).
Cold Hard Football Facts had a great article about passer rating differential a while back, stating that close to 50% of the SB winners were either #1 or #2 in passer rating differential. And turnover differential is used by most coaches, moreso those who worked under Marty Schottenheimer.
I don't know the current ratings. But if *we win the SB, it'll be the longest win streak in NFL history. That alone should be an indicament of an historically great team. The fact that *we will have won 2 SBs in that time frame makes for an ever better case. And I do believe *we'll also rank pretty high in both passer rating differential and turnover differential.
Of course, all that considering that *we do, in fact, go 19-0, and that's not even close to guaranteed.
*I do understand that I'm not actually a part of the team, the staff, or management. That doesn't mean I don't feel like it.

Yards are for losers. In the past, when field position mattered, and a scoring drive was the anomaly, it did matter.
Nowadays, with the evolution of the passing game and the rule changes, yards is one of the least important stats, if not the least, when it comes to measuring wins and losses, which is the ultimate goal of this sport.

RS, don't feel the need to justify to the Bill Johnson's of the world for saying *we. As much time and passion you put into following this franchise, you should feel like you are a part of it. I say *we when referring to the Pack all the time... Well before any stock was purchased, and I don't give two shits what people think. I doubt anybody that frequents this site will say they don't go the *we route on occasion.. WE will go back to back, you and I just won't be in the locker room to celebrate. I'm gonna hit it hard though, that I can guarantee.

I wonder if we (oops - I mean the Pack) would be better off just using Grant and Kuhn for the Chiefs game until Saine and Starks come back next week. It would seem silly to bring a body in for just one week. Maybe have Cobb in reserve as a psuedo RB for this one game.
