In a column at the Florida Times-Union, writer Gene Frenette clued his readers into the impending retirement of former Packers quarterback Mark Brunell. "Brunell's career transition, which might lead him to pursue coaching or business opportunities, will be gradual," writes Frenette. "He wants to take a year off as the family prepares to move back to Jacksonville. His oldest son, Jacob, will be a two-sport athlete at Providence School, and 19-year-old Caitlin, a dance major at the University of Alabama, recently qualified for the Miss Alabama pageant." Brunell is 41 years old and a veteran of 19 seasons after being drafted into NFL by the Packers back in 1993.
Teammates of Chad Clifton, current and former, reacted to the release of the veteran left tackle after 12 NFL seasons. "It was a tough day," Mark Tauscher told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "When you're playing and then it ends just like that, it's tough. I know what it's like. Chad had an unbelievable career." The end of Tauscher's career ended in a very similar fashion, being released instead of retiring. Whether Clifton intends to continue playing remains to be seen.
The effect of re-signing Erik Walden is touched upon by Rob Demovsky at the Press-Gazette. "Though it probably won’t impact what they do in the draft, the Green Bay Packers will have their entire group of right outside linebackers back," writes Demovsky. News that offseason roster size will increase from 80 to 90 players may have made it easier for the Packers to bring Walden back, although it's doubtful that was the deciding factor. Terms of Walden's deal have not yet become available.
Former Packers safety LeRoy Butler will represent the Packers at the NFL Draft this week. "Butler, the former All-Pro safety for the Packers, is headed to New York City for the NFL draft," writes Mike Spofford of Packers.com. "He’ll be the Packers’ alumni player who announces Green Bay’s second-round pick on Friday, April 27, at the Radio City Music Hall podium. Jim Taylor handled the duty last year." What will happen if the Packers trade out of the second round? Butler will still probably be acknowledged with the rest of the NFL alumni.
Defensive back and special teams ace Jarrett Bush was interviewed at Pro Football Weekly for an article. “Both New York and Arizona are great organizations, but it came down to where I felt I was the best fit,” Bush said of his free agent courting this offseason. “I thought the Green Bay coaching staff knows what I’m capable of, and I love the fans here and definitely feel that the team is still a contender.
