Packers Daily Links: Finley Doesn't Practice

Tight end Jermichael Finley did not practice on Wednesday evening due to a glute contusion. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Tight end Jermichael Finley did not practice at Wednesday evening's training camp practice due to glute contusion. “I have no reason to believe it’s serious,” head coach Mike McCarthy is quoted as saying by Bill Huber of Packer Report. “We will do play time for the Cleveland game tomorrow as a staff at noon, and as always, the practice tomorrow night will hopefully not factor in adjusting the play time. If Jermichael is any threat of not playing in Cleveland, I don’t have that information yet for you.” Finley has said on Twitter he does not plan to play in any preseason games, though the coaching staff has not said anything to that effect.

After sitting out all week with an ankle injury, the plan is for kicker Mason Crosby to return to practice this evening. "Crosby (ankle) did some kicking inside the Don Hutson Center and hit a few onside kicks in practice," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He will attempt to go in full on Thursday and will be evaluated Friday to see if he can play this weekend." The Packers may sign a kicker to play in Saturday's game if it's determined Crosby can't go.

In response to yesterday's news that linebacker Clay Matthews played through a stress fracture in his shin last season, Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com asked him why the injury was not revealed: "Asked why he kept the injury secret, Matthews replied, 'Strictly from a scouting standpoint, I don’t need other teams knowing that I have some type of ailment.'"

More on Clay Matthews appears at JSOnline.

The solid performance of tackle Bryan Bulaga while facing off against Clay Matthews in training camp is noted by Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "To be sure, one-on-one pass-rushing drills are not the ultimate measure of line play, where sometimes a player is more concerned with working on a move than with winning the snap," writes Dougherty. "Yet, there’s also no dismissing Bulaga’s unofficial 14-2-1 record against all comers in one-on-ones, including 5-2-1 against the outside linebacker who last season finished No. 2 in the voting for NFL defensive player of the year."

A background story on undrafted rookie wide receiver Tori Gurley is relayed by Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel. "On Mother's Day of 2008, his father died in a car accident," writes Dunne. "Since then, he's been a different player, a different person. The event changed him and how he attacked life's obstacles. Now, Gurley is buried on the depth chart of the most receiver-rich team in the league." You have to read the rest yourself. Highly suggested reading.

With Aaron Rodgers sitting out of practice on Tuesday, the backup quarterbacks, such as Graham Harrell, have become frequently discussed. "His head coach envisions him becoming a No. 2 one day," writes Bob McGinn of the Journal Sentinel. It's likely Flynn will leave Green Bay next year, and the Packers will have to decide whether Harrell can be their number two.

More on Graham Harrell comes from Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette and Jason Wilde.

It's time for the defense to stop learning the playbook and start preparing for opponents. "The playbook of the NFL’s wizard of defense was emptied on Wednesday night. 'Today was our last install,' Packers Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers said," writes Vic Ketchman of the Packers official website. The installation phase has been condensed thanks to the lack of an NFL offseason due to the lockout. We'll see how the defense responds.

The way the Packers have selected college left tackles to protect Aaron Rodgers is detailed by Vic Ketchman as well. "(Ted) Thompson’s quest to do just that, he has surrounded Rodgers with the makings of one of the top offensive lines in the game," writes Ketchman. "Veteran Chad Clifton, one of the league’s top pass-blockers over the last 11 years, remains a fixture at left tackle. Bryan Bulaga, a left tackle at Iowa and the Packers’ first-round pick in 2010, is at right tackle. Derek Sherrod, a left tackle at Mississippi State and the Packers’ first-round pick this year, is at left guard."

Running back Ryan Grant has articles written on him by Kareem Copeland of the Press-Gazette and Tom Silverstein.

Former Packers running back Ahman Green will appear as a sideline analyst on the Big Ten Network.
