Packers Daily Links: Driver Broaches Hall of Fame

Donald Driver brought up his potential inclusion into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Sunday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

While at the annual Donald Driver Celebrity Softball Game, the event's namesake brought up the topic of the Hall of Fame during his press conference, and not the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. “If I can play two to three more years and put a nice little stamp on it, those records will stand there forever, and when it’s all said and done, maybe one day I can stand up here in Canton, Ohio, saying, ‘I made it,'" said Driver, as quoted by Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The Super Bowl victory was an almost integral piece of the puzzle, if it's going to happen, though I'm not sure it will. I'm not saying the Pro Football Hall of Fame is entirely out of the question, but I think Driver still needs another Pro Bowl season or two. And I'm not sure how he's going to have any more Pro Bowl seasons when the ball is going to be split among Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Jermichael Finley, the other up-and-coming tight ends and the running backs.

Bill Huber of Packer Report touches upon the same subject (subscription required). It's also worth noting that Driver brought up James Lofton's franchise records as motivation for him, now that he's already achieved football's ultimate prize.

The game itself was a hit. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised for the Donald Driver Foundation with the help of a sellout crowd. "Fox Cities Stadium — home of the Milwaukee Brewers’ Class A team, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers — was filled on a sun-splashed day," writes Bill Huber. "Before belting a home run, Driver said he hoped to raise as much as $275,000." Over 8,000 fans filled the stadium, as the Packers played gracious hosts signing tons of autographs.

Thanks to the NFL lockout, it was the first time many of the players had seen each other since shortly after the Super Bowl. “We were all just happy to see each other. It’d been awhile,” tight end Tom Crabtree is quoted as saying by Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. “Nobody – fans, owners, players – nobody wants to see this thing cut into camp time, which could cut into the season. No one wants to see that. I’m hoping it happens soon – just one day, out of the blue, slow news day, there’s a deal. That’s my hopeful outlook.” The offseason workout program, including individual position workouts, as well as Organized Team Activites and minicamp have all been wiped out by the lockout.

Whether the team will get together for a player-organized workout remains to be seen. If it does happen, the players are looking to quarterback Aaron Rodgers to make it happen. “I know a lot of guys are getting antsy, but we’re professionals," safety Nick Collins is quoted as saying by Kareem Copeland of the Press-Gazette. "We know what we need to do to stay in shape. Once we get that call (we’ll) be ready for training camp. Right now A-Rod is the leader. If he wants to call and get something going, we’re right there for him. Right now, everybody’s kind of doing what they’ve been doing. It’s been successful for us so we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing.” Running back Ryan Grant echoed the same sentiment.

The action on the field wasn't taken too seriously, although there were some heroics. "Punter Tim Masthay showed he can blast a softball like he can boom a football, also going 4-for-4 at the plate with two homers and five RBI to win MVP honors and lead the defense to an 18-16 win over the offense," writes Tim Froberg of the Appleton Post-Crescent. Meanwhile, Tom Crabtree won the MVT, most valuable tweeter award.

In the home run derby, there was an upset champion. "Lineman Bryan Bulaga won the home run derby, dethroning defending champion Matt Flynn, Green Bay's backup quarterback. The second-year guard belted six home runs in the pregame contest," writes Martin Hendricks for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. You might remember Bulaga winning the home run derby the Packers ran at minicamp last season, winning a beater of a car that said "Dallas or Bust" or some such slogan.

Before Sunday's softball game, Driver held an autograph signing at Waukesha Sportscards on Sunday. "Driver's autograph signing was popular with Packers' fans in Waukesha," writes Sarah Millard of Waukesha Patch. "The line wrapped outside the door as people waited to get a glimpse of the reliable receiver." The article also includes a photo gallery of Driver at the event.

Ahman Green cut by Montreal? Ouch.

I probably shouldn't comment on DD's NFL HOF aspirations without reading Bill Huber's take, but it seems like a long shot to me. The only NFL record that I see that DD might make the book for is most 1000 yard seasons - and that's probably as a tie for third place. If you list the dominant receivers of the last 10 years, I don't think too many fans around the league are putting DD on the list. He probably has not been the #1 reciever on the team for a few years now, although that's debateable. DD's been a warrior on the field and as good off the field as anyone has a right to expect. He will be a Packer VIP for life. But from an NFL perspective, he'll go down as a very good wide reciever who played for one (or two) HOF quarterbacks in the passing game era.

I hope he does make it to the Hall of Fame. It is difficult to get there from that position. It's these kinds of pro players, the ones that have dreams and are willing to give of themselves that belong there.

Lynn Swann lowered the bar for receivers to get into the HOF. If DD makes a couple of highlight real plays and gets a fistful of rings, he should be a shoe-in.

Kudos BC for remembering how they insulted the "football gods" and karma and all that last year? Funny stuff.

Well, I'm glad to see that Driver's staying motivated, but that is a lofty goal. I tend to think of HOF candidates as guys that flat-out dominated their position for a number of years.

Driver has always been a superlative player and guy, but I can't think of any time during his career when he was really one of the top few guys at the WR position in the NFL. I just can't see Canton as a realistic possibility though.

Hope he lights it up for a few more and proves me wrong though!

Do you really think of Art Monk as a dominating player?

If Chris Carter still hasn't made it in, there's no way DD will.

Need to be clear on this .... I'm not sure that DD would have broached the idea of NFL HOF without a little push from Tim Brown .....

"Receiver Tim Brown, who played in a Super Bowl but never won one, planted the thought of a championship equating to Hall of Fame consideration into Driver’s head before the Packers beat the Steelers in early February." .....

I'd vote for him but then I'm extremely biased ....

Checked a few numbers ..... DD has more receptions & yards (698/9615) than Swann, Warfield, Stallworth, Biletnikoff & C. Taylor already .... He needs 53 receptions to pass Joiner & Irvin ..... He needs 67 receptions to pass J. Lofton .... Seemingly only Largent, Monk & Rice are out of range (total receptions) .....

If DD could pull in another 100 receptions the next two years plus 2 more SB trophies, he'd have to be a serious candidate if he isn't already .....
