Packers Daily Links: Deal Closer to Getting Done with Matthews Than Rodgers

A deal with linebacker Clay Matthews is reportedly closer to getting done than quarterback Aaron Rodgers. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Amidst news that contract negotiations are progressing with both quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews, Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette adds a bit of new information. "A source familiar with the negotiations told the Press-Gazette on Wednesday that talks were further along on a deal with their four-time Pro Bowl defensive standout," writes Demovsky. There's a growing feeling that since both Rodgers and Matthews are represented by the same agent (David Dunn) that the deals could get done at the same time, but regardless of how they're announced, it doesn't appear as if it will be long now.

More on the Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews deals comes from ESPN.com, ESPNMilwaukee.com, NFL.com, Acme Packing Company, Lombardi Ave. and Packer Report.

An article at OvertheCap.com takes a look at what would be a "fair" deal for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

An update on the Packers' salary cap situation came on Wednesday, and the news is that general manger Ted Thompson is doing a good job managing the Packers' finances. "As of Tuesday morning, the Green Bay Packers ranked sixth in the NFL with $17.799 million in salary cap space and among the lowest in the amount of dead money on their ledgers," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The term "dead money" refers to players who have been released or retired and still have money counting against the salary cap after they're gone. It's impossible to avoid these salary-cap hits entirely, the Packers are doing a good job avoiding them compared to other teams in the NFL.

The agent for newly signed cornerback Loyce Means was interviewed by Wes Hodkiewicz of the Press-Gazette, through which we learn Means is currently still working a job in retail. “To his credit, he was getting up at 4:30 a.m. and working out till 10 at night,” agent Rob Sheets is quoted as saying. “To tell you how good of a kid he is, he could’ve come back from Green Bay after signing the contract and head a big head and walked away, but he gave them a two week notice, so he’s still working.” We also learn that Means ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds. That's blazing.

News that Frank Zombo has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs is passed along by the Press-Gazette, ESPNMilwaukee.com, JSOnline and Fox Sports Wisconsin.

Not shooting the messenger here, but does it seem to anyone else that there have been far more meaningless updates coming out of the woodwork than any contract negotiations in recent memory??

Some variation of 'they are close' has been reported, with no meaningful new information, what four times in the last two weeks.
