Packers Daily Links: Bishop Placed on Injured Reserve

Desmond Bishop's season has officially come to an end. That and more in today's Daily Links...

When the Packers met the NFL's mandated roster cutdown to 75 players on Monday, they placed linebacker Desmond Bishop on injured reserve, ending his season. "A measure adopted by management in May would have allowed one injured-reserve player to return after eight weeks instead of being out for the year," writes Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "The players union refused to approve the rule, and with it any chance that Bishop might have returned." The Packers will officially be banking on D.J. Smith as their starter for the rest of the season. A.J. Hawk too.

More on the cutdown to 75 players, including the release of former starter Jarius Wynn, comes from the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Associated Press, ESPNMilwaukee.com, Fox Sports Wisconsin, Packer Report and JSOnline.

As part of the cutdown to 75 players, the Packers placed tight end Andrew Quarless and linebacker Frank Zombo on the PUP list, buying them a little extra time to decide their futures. When a player is placed on the PUP list, they cannot practice for the first six weeks of the regular season. "After the six weeks is up, the Packers have a three-week window in which to begin practicing Quarless or Zombo," writes Tom Silverstein of JSOnline. "They can do it right away or at the end of the ninth week. As soon as either one begins practicing, another three-week window opens in which the team must decide their future." Perhaps surprisingly, the Packers did not yet place tackle Derek Sherrod on the PUP list. They may yet choose to do so, or place him on 53-man roster before the start of the season. What they ultimately decide to do is up in the air.

More on the PUP list comes from PackersNews.com and Packer Report.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the victim of a practical joke inside the Packers' locker room on Monday during an interview with reporters. "Rodgers loves a good practical joke as much as the next guy, but it was hard to tell whether the Green Bay Packers quarterback was amused or angered by fullback John Kuhn’s shaving cream pie-to-the-face prank Monday," writes Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. Pies to the face are more common in the world of baseball than football, so Monday's prank kind of came out of the blue.

More on Aaron Rodgers and Monday's prank comes from Fox Sports Wisconsin and PackersNews.com.

The starters will not play much in the Packers' preseason finale, and practice this week has reflected that. "As a result of the starters not playing much Thursday night, practice has been structured so that those competing for roster spots are getting more preparation time," writes Tom Silverstein. "The starters - even Rodgers - have spent time on the scout team imitating Kansas City's schemes." That also means backup quarterback and the rest of the second- and third-string players will see a lot of playing time on Thursday.

More on the final preseason game comes from the Press-Gazette, twice, PackersNews.com and the Packers official website.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings is wearing a new Riddell helmet after his recent concussion. "Quarterback Aaron Rodgers switched helmets to a more protective, anti-concussion model after two concussions during the 2010 season," writes Jason Wilde. "The design brings the ear flaps farther around the player’s jawline and fits slightly more snugly in other areas. While no helmet is truly concussion-proof, the design is believed to be more concussion-resistant."

Players on the Packers respond to news that Matt Flynn is the backup quarterback in Seattle in an article at Fox Sports Wisconsin.

D.J. Williams is challenging Jermichael Finley for playing time, according to Tom Silverstein.

If Aaron pranks with a chip on his shoulder like he plays with a chip on his shoulder, Mr. Kuhn is probably going to have his brake line cut at some point.

Exactly, I think ARod was none to pleased at the time. Wonder if we'll see ARod audible out of Kuhn run plays to Kuhn blocking plays.

I fail to understand why the safer helmets aren't mandatory.

Totally agree. If seat belts are a law, why can't the safer helmets be mandated? Deal with the discomfort.

I imagine it's because the NFL has a deal with the company that makes the less safe helmets. But that's just a guess...
