Packers Daily Links: 17 Players Out Injured for Chargers Game

Considering the Packers haven't even played a game yet, the injury list is awfully big and a slew of players won't be playing in Thursday's preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers. According to Tyler Dunne of JSOnline, "Those who won't play are: RB Du'ane Bennett, RB Brandon Saine, FB Jon Hoese, CB Sam Shields, TE Eric Lair, LB Frank Zombo, OT Mike McCabe, DE Johnny Jones, OG Jaymes Brooks, OG Ray Dominguez, (Marshall) Newhouse, OT Derek Sherrod, TE Andrew Quarless, TE Ryan Taylor, WR Greg Jennings and WR Tori Gurley." Rookie defensive lineman Mike Daniels hasn't been ruled out, but he hasn't practiced all week and is unlikely to play. There was a dose of good news on Tuesday when tight end D.J. Williams and wide receiver Dale Moss returned to practice, however.

More on the injury concerns come from the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Packer Report and PackersNews.com, twice.

All the injuries piling up, particularly at left tackle where Marshall Newhouse and Derek Sherrrod have been ruled out, have caused concern about the health of Green Bay's most valuable player, Aaron Rodgers. "That sets up a dilemma for (head coach Mike) McCarthy for Thursday’s preseason opener at San Diego, as he ruled starting left tackle Marshall Newhouse out for the game after Newhouse missed his third consecutive practice on Tuesday," writes Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. "Newhouse sustained a concussion during the team’s annual Family Night Scrimmage on Friday night and has not been cleared to return." McCarthy said he'll determine on Wednesday how much the starters play in the preseason opener.

The depth along the offensive line has been of particular concern. "When the second line comes in — trust me, Rodgers will be on the bench by then — that comfort zone will quickly disappear," writes Tom Oates of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "From left to right, the backup line likely will be Herb Taylor, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Sampson Genus, Tommie Draheim and Andrew Datko." The offensive line should be in better shape, in theory. Both Derek Sherrod and Ray Dominguez would normally be part of the second-string line but are out injured.

More on the depth of the offensive line comes from JSOnline, Fox Sports Wisconsin and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

Tight end Jermichael Finley made a bold statement on Tuesday when he told Paul Imig of Fox Sports Wisconsin that he wants to win multiple Super Bowl rings. "When you've got three or four rings, you ain't gonna look back at just that one," Finley is quoted as saying. "So my plan is to win as many rings as possible. If you want to be great, greatness comes in the rings. I think we can win. We are young and coming into our own right now." Finley also said he wants to have an elite, breakout season. Those things are all fine and good, now he just has to go out and live up to the talk.

Cornerback Charles Woodson also got attention for comments he made about Shannon Eastin who will become the first female referee to work an NFL game on Thursday. “It’s probably about time,” Woodson told Wes Hodkiewicz of PackersNews.com. “I’m sure women have probably tried at some point along the way leading up to this point, so I would assume it’s somebody qualified out there that we won’t have to jump over for making bad calls. We look forward to it. That’s just the way things are and the way I think it should be. So hats off to her and whoever decided to make it happen.” Kudos to Woodson for going out on a limb and making such a statement in a male-dominated sport.

More on Charles Woodson and the first female referee come from ESPNMilwaukee.com and the Associated Press.

A preview on the Packers from Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports includes another bold comment, this one coming from linebacker Clay Matthews, who says the Giants didn't beat the Packers last year, the Packers beat themselves. Statements like that tend to make bulletin board material.

The Packers claimed wide receiver Andy Brewer off waivers and released guard Jaymes Brooks.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson is called one of the top players at training camp by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Tight end Tom Crabtree's battle for a roster spot and his Twitter hiatus is covered by Tyler Dunne.

Center Jeff Saturday and his advanced age are the focus of an article by Jason Wilde.

Linebacker Vic So'oto is profiled in a piece by Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette.

The right side offensive line combo of Bryan Bulaga and Josh Sitton are featured by Rob Reischel for Packer Plus.

Defensive lineman B.J. Raji is looking to be more explosive, writes Tyler Dunne.

Safety M.D. Jennings is featured in an article by Martin Hendricks for Packer Plus.

Quarterback Graham Harrell has an opportunity in the preseason, according to the Packers official website.

Training camp round-ups come from the Journal Sentinel, ESPNMilwaukee.com, Fox 11 and Packer Report.

Someone needs to tell Finley to stop worrying about greatness and multiple rings and worry more about not dropping the next pass thrown his way.

Or be more outraged at the reporter who chose not to take that angle with his story. That's just plain ridiculous!

FINLEY.....the only player on this team that is all about himself.no matter how big, fast and strong he is, i DONT like him.and i have a feeling there are many many players on this team that feel the same way.hope d.j.william is the real deal,so we can trade finley to the eagles, where all the other ME players play.
