Packers Couldn't Break Tackles In 2009

Football Outsiders' game charters have the Packers as the worst team in the league at breaking tackles.

Or that is the tale we are told from the stat gurus over at Aaron Schatz' shop - Football Outsiders.

According to their game charters, the Packers were the worst team in the league at breaking tackles on offense. (Conversely, their numbers say the Packers did a great job of actually making tackles when they were there to be made - which surprised me) Look for FO's book in July - it is just essential reading for any football fan.

I posted it at another thread... Since Rodgers took over, our YAC dropped... And coincidentally, MN's went up with Favre... Don't know if it's just a coincidence...

And about tackling, I'm counting it's regular season only... Because the playoff game was embarassing, tackling wise...

YAC per reception (drilling way down):

07’ run with Favre the Packers had 2 receivers in the top 50 with Jennings at 7.4/reception and Jones at 5.1/ reception. Driver was the next Packer to show up at #58 on the list when sorting in this fashion.

09’ run with Rodgers had 3 receivers in the top 25 with Jennings at 6.9/reception, Jones at 5.8/reception and Driver at 5.4/reception.

09’ Vikings had Harvin in the top 25 at 6.2/reception and then nobody until Rice at #43 with 4.5/reception.

Just sorting everything by YAC/reception to drill down. Rodgers yards per attempt is better than Favre over his 1st two years and indicative of Rodgers superior accuracy on intermediate to deep routes (quite frankly Favre was never great in this area).

You mean, I wasn't crazy for criticizing Ryan Grant? Gee, just when everyone had convinced me otherwise - NOT.

# of plays for the year
___
# of plays with a Broke Tackle
_____
Develop a BT index
_____
And that tells me what? I find it a amusing that some of leagues' most prolific offenses are rated so low. Could it be that BT's are meaningless over-analysis?

I think we should be focused more on doing some tackling than breaking them. As evidenced by Beanie Wells' performance in the playoffs of course.

God that sucked. Just goes to show, #1 rush D mean jack-squat if you piss your pants in the playoffs. Oh, and TO margin too. How F'ING disappointing.

Does it really matter since we're not a "running" team? The offense looked pretty good to me in the second half of last year. I realize Ryan Grant is not an elite back, but would a top-tier back put up with our lack of running the ball? I think Ryan Grant fits McCarthy's system, and the offense seems to be working just fine.

Seems to me that ol' #4 specialized in the slant pattern when he was here and therefore his YAC was impressive. Doesn't seem to me that McCarthy has Rodgers throwing anywhere near as many, which I don't really understand. When Rodgers was getting killed the first part of last season, most routes seemed to be 10-15 yds out, not quick hitters. He changed his playcalling somewhat as well as got Taucher back and the offense took off from there.

Rodgers has a superior yards/attempt average compared to Favre in each of his 1st two years. Also, Jennings, Driver and Jones are all in the top 25 among NFL receivers last year in YAC per attempt. Only Percy Harvin shows up in the top 25 for Minnesota.

Not certain why that perception is out there. Is this back to the legend of Favre vs. the reality of Favre (not criticising you, PackerHank).

I think it's because when Favre was here, we used more quick plays, and the receivers got their YAC by battling.

With Rodgers, and the perfect deep throws he makes, they get their YAC by simply running to the endzone.

This may also be perception, but would explain Rodgers' better YPA... He throws more deep passes (quite frankly, by watching him, I don't think there's anyone in the league that throws a better deep ball. Maybe Rivers...)

Appears MM is designing plays to fit the individual QBs' strengths.

Not sure what you mean. If anything, I would contend the Aaron Rodgers that exists now offers even more flexibility than the Brett Favre that's existed since 02'. More accurate intermediate to deep and an actual threat to run the ball while rolling out.

Actually, did Favre ever have that kind of consistancy or rating on 3rd down conversions?

Never - however, Rodgers suffers in comparison when throwing the slant. He is very inconsistent with it and by extension, you see McCarthy calling it a lot less - either that or Rodgers is checking out of it ;)

Hmn... I don't see it. I actually see Rodgers A LOT of times using the pass in the pass/run option play, which usually calls for slants...

It's not a knack on Rodgers. Favre just had a better short range precision, that's all.

To me it's more on the receivers. Like I said before, if you can touch it, you can catch it. IT's THEIR job to get YAC. If Rodgers is able to avoid 3 pass rushers coming unblocked and still deliver the ball in the running, the better. If not, deal with it and make something out of nothing.
