Packers Could Make A Move At Tight End

ESPN's Rob Demovsky says the team could be looking at signing a free agent to bolster the position.

From Rob Demovsky

Don't be surprised if the Packers make a roster addition at the tight end spot before training camp opens July 30. The best option on the market is former Jermaine Gresham, the former Cincinnati Bengals starter. Gresham is recovering from back surgery but indications are he could be cleared in time for the start of training camp.

Normally I wouldn't pay much mind to a reporter throwing out a possibility like this, but Rob is well-connected in Green Bay and wouldn't write this if he hadn't spoken to someone high-up at 1265 Lombardi.

Now, of course, that "someone" most likely isn't Ted Thompson. There's a good chance that the move is being talked about and Ted will eventually decided against it.

But it's definitely being talked about.

Given Quarless' recent incident, the Packers have to show some disappointment in him so that his team mates know that's not acceptable in the Packers' culture. The "leak" to Demovsky may be enough to send that message, or maybe they even bring Gresham into camp as a no-cost tangible reminder that being stupid can cost you your job. But either way, a message needed to be sent from the Packers: Sure Goodell can fine you, but we can fire you if we want.

I for one would love to see Gresham in the Packers camp. As much as believe Richard Rodgers will make significant jump, I'd still like to have some depth behind him. The whole Quarless thing still needs to be settled and until that is the Packers need a better backup than Perillo.

They've brought in guys before to talk but no signings. Whatshisname the Ravens signed last year would have fit in nice for the Packers. I can't remember shit any more. Sucks to get old.

Owen Daniels? ... He's moved on to the Broncos, apparently following Kubiak.

I too suffer from CRSS (Can't Remember Shit Syndrome).

I think they'll be ok at TE with RRodgers...if he gets hurt, then they'll be in some trouble. Injuries happen...but hopefully the Pack will be relatively injury free in 2015.

ARod has the dynamic duo + Adams to throw to with the workhorse Lacy to run the rock (and catch too...he's got good hands for a big RB). TE/FB is the 5th option so I think things are lookin' good with options 1-4.

Personally, I see former Washington TE, Fred Davis, as an option for a visit. Prior to his injury, two seasons ago, he had the makings of a stud at the position...

I liked Davis on the field as well, but it's hard for me to see them bringing in a guy who has a year long suspension on his resume.

A valid point, Aaron, and one that I considered. If I recall correctly, Davis' suspension was drug related. The Packers have shown a willingness to give players with addiction issues a shot at redemption, e.g. Johnny Jolly and Colt Lyerla, mostly recently.

Aaron, when might we expect the next installment of "Nagler's Never Right"? I've loved every episode thus far.

It was a bonehead move! But releasing him would be a mistake we all know Ted and free agency if the Packers do decide to release him he will be on another team within days ....

It's time to bring back Colt Lyerla, they would have an instant impact starter.

New Rumor: NFL, Goodell has decreed Packers to move to Chicago and share new stadium with Bears no later than 2025.

Of all scenarios , that's the least likely. Its like when Tampa was in the same div., the Packers and tampa were going to merge. They would have been called Tampacks, because they would only have one string and good for one period.

Gresham would be a nice fit in the Packers offense. Though I would be really surprised if the Packers went after him.

I could see them looking for a TE, but likely it will be a little known player.

I agree with some of these comments most notably the one about bringing Lyerla back. Of course, I say without knowing what he's been up to lately, but he's gotta know this would be his last chance and GB could wrap him up at a very low cost. He has the athleticism- now they just have to work on his mindset.
