Packers Calendar: Waiting to Hear on Vance Walker Visit

A visit with the free agent defensive lineman could happen as soon as Friday.

The Green Bay Packers have yet to sign a free agent from another team, but that could change if they bring in former Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Vance Walker for a visit.

From Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com:

The Packers expect a visit from free-agent defensive tackle Vance Walker perhaps as soon as Friday. Walker, a starter for the Oakland Raiders last season, doesn’t have star power but could provide some depth on the defensive line. Walker visited the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

If the Chiefs are truly motivated to sign Walker, they may not want him to leave town before signing a deal.

The Packers might have their work cut out for them, prepared to offer a more lucrative contract, if they even hope to have the visit actually occur.

Should they sign Walker, he would be a new face on what could be a new-look defensive line in Green Bay with B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, Johnny Jolly and C.J. Wilson all free agents.

Friday morning on Cheesehead TV, we'll be interviewing defensive lineman Josh Boyd, and ask him the status of the position.

Boyd joins us at 8:30 a.m. CT on our morning talk show, Railbird Central. Our homepage will be taken over by the live broadcast at that time. Tune in.

An old 4-3 DE playing OLB. A rookie LB playing safety. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.

Just an old DE?
4.72 40, 265lbs, 13 reps, 4.34shuttle, 7.11 cone. Those are 3-4 OLB numbers if I've ever seen'em.

And Jerod is a better pass rusher than clay Matthews. Or at least has been with 21 more sacks over the past 5 years. That's almost 50% more production as a pass-rusher, an f'n lot.

From what can and should be considered an upgrade of pass-rush from the OLB position. To a definite huge upgrade in run-support, coverage, and pass-rush from the ILB position. Jared Allen could instantly upgrade the packer's 3-4 linebacking core to the very best in the entire league.

I'll take the freaky athletic Justin Gilbert or the even more freaky Ryan Shazier over dix and pryor at safety anyday. Dix and pryor can't cover anyway. Shazier is a "Once in a generation" kind of athlete, but still should be there at 21. Ryan Shazier could be the ultimate in the box safety, allowing Morgan Burnett to return to his ball-hawking ways. The super Okie with extra coverage ability. Shazier is much quicker than dix or pryor. He's also taller and can jump much, much, higher. Shazier is also much, much, much faster and stronger than dix or pryor. Ryan Shazier also happens to have more pass-breakups in his career, at LB, than Dix or Pryor do, as Dbacks.

Thanks Evan, It is a tasty recipe. The only change I could concede is drafting a Center/Guard prospect, such as [Trai Turner/Bryan Stork/Tyler Larson/Russell Bodine] with the 27th pick of the 4th round. And/Or work a trade for the great LaMichael James.

haha...I think once a player hits 30, his combine numbers are no longer relevant.
