Packers Calendar: Safeties, DBs Work Out at the Combine, Matthews on Dan Patrick Show
TV coverage of the final day of the NFL Combine runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. CT on the NFL Network.
Tuesday is the final day of the NFL Combine, a day when the Green Bay Packers will have the opportunity to watch safeties and the rest of the defensive backs work out.
With safety being such a position of need in Green Bay, there will be a lot of scrutiny on that position and the top prospects available, including guys like Calvin Pryor, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Deone Buccanon.
If the Packers don’t take one of those afore-mentioned players in the first round, however, they may not have an opportunity to draft them at all. In such a case, they’ll also be keeping an eye on the next tier of safeties available, the mid-round guys.
Defensive backs will go through measured drills such as the 40-yard dash, vertical and horizontal jumps, the three-cone drill and shuttles. They’ll also participate in position drills, displaying how they drop into coverage, catch the ball and more.
Live television coverage starts at 8:00 a.m. CT on the NFL Network and runs through 1:00 p.m.
After Tuesday, teams will go back home and reflect on what they saw at the Combine, crunching numbers from drills, evaluating physical examinations, process the interviews and draw conclusions on players.
There’s only a short turn-around time until the on-campus pro day circuit begins in early March.
Also on Tuesday, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews will appear on the Dan Patrick Show, according to producer Paul Pabst.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has reportedly ran and unofficial 4.5, 40.
Deone Bucannon has reportedly ran and unofficial 4.5, 40.
Justin Gilbert has reportedly ran and unofficial 4.35, 40.
Darqueze Dennard has reportedly ran and unofficial 4.42, 40.

I like Gilbert a lot... Have for a long time. His running a sub 4.4 just solidifies his status IMO and may push him up boards a few picks out of Packers reach. Move Hyde to Safety and draft CB Gilbert would be a good move to solidify the secondary.

I like Gilbert as well...
Right now I think it will really be between him and Mike Evans for Detroit at 10. If Lions pass on him, I think Bears take him at 14.
I don't see anyway Gilbert falls to the Packers at 21.
I do like Dennard as well, but I like Gilbert more. Dennard's speed is better then I thought it would be so that is good.
He potentially could be there for Green Bay. I like his physical play.

Whats more important is the 3 cone and shuttle drills for these guys tho. I'll be curious to see what those show. If Bucannon (for example) doesn't show quickness he won't be as successful.

Bucannon's 40 time improves his stock a bit.
I agree the 3 cone and shuttle drills will be a key number for him.
The same can be said for Calvin Pryor.

Calvin Pryor Reportedly has ran an unofficial 4.62 40.
That is borderline of where he needs to be at.
There is a good chance I think he could fall a bit.
The shuttle and 3 cone will be huge for him.

And he's now only 5'11" not 6'2"?!?
Sure sounding like he'll be there at 21 now.

Correct. He measured in at 5'11... Which shocked me. I kept hearing 6'2, so I thought maybe 6'1 possibly 6' but 5'11 really hurts him I think.
Especially when he runs around a 4.6 40.
I don't see him going ahead of the Packers, and honestly I question if he will drop out of the 1st round or at the very least to the very bottom of the 1st.
Not a good sign for a player to not be as tall or fast as you think he might be.

Earl Thomas ran a 4.4 40 I believe. Different type of players.
Pryor is more like Kam Chancellor just not as big or fast.
Honestly, the height bothers me more then the speed. I thought he was going to measure in at least 2" taller. But to come in and to be 3" shorter then expected and to run a slower 40 time. Not a good combine for Pryor IMO.

Clinton-Dix looks extremely fluid in position drills, which Deion Sanders is a big proponent of. Bucannon wasn't as fluid as Clinton-Dix, but had solid fluidity and had nice change of direction. Ahmad Dixon was a bit tight hipped, but appeared a bit more explosive in his change of direction.

Gilbert looked excellent in all drills, Dennard not so much...looked very tight. Philip Gaines stood out as a guy that improved his stock...did very well in all drills.
Looking forward to watching group 2, with Pryor, Ward, Loston, Jean-Baptiste (really like this guy).
This DB class is ridiculously deep!!!

Kind of iffy if any of these guys are there for the Packers. My guess is they probably already have moved on in their minds to that fact and are looking at the best new Raji available.

A defensive lineman is the most likely choice for TT based on probable need, and his past draft history......the way he values big guys.
Most fans get bored talking about the big defensive lineman and prefer to talk about flashy players like linebacker (OLB-ILB), corner or safety on D.
Fortunately TT understands that most games are won or lost at the line of scrimmage. So nothing to fear. ;)
Seattle won the Super Bowl because they dominated broncos o-line and allowed their teammates to clean up the easy scraps.
The unsung hero of SB XLV was big ol Howard Green. He made the hit on Big Ben which resulted in Collins TD. Without Collins TD, packers don't win game. Howard Green never got enough credit for that. ;)

Well seeing the Ted Thompson combine interview I know this could be a smoke screen. But him saying he's not drafting for need but best available I think alot of that is true but if these safety's keep emerging as top picks and one falls to the pack he's pulling the trigger. And if a guy like Gilbert is there at 21 and the packers dont plan on bring back tramon because of that contract I think Gilbert will be the guy. Especially having some actual dep and value at the second round of the draft at the safety position.
