Packers Calendar: Roster Moves Coming as Soon as Christmas Eve

The Packers have spots open on their roster as they prepare to hit the practice field on Tuesday.

Tuesday is normally the Packers' day off from work, but because of the Christmas holiday, they'll be taking off Wednesday instead.

That means the Packers will be practicing on Tuesday and could potentially do so with a couple new faces in the locker room.

The Packers placed both defensive lineman Johnny Jolly and tight end Brandon Bostick on injured reserve last week, bringing their roster down to 51 players. They didn't sign anyone to replace them for last Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it wasn't necessary with league rules mandating only 46 players can be active on game days.

Moving forward, however, the Packers will very likely want a full complement of players available to practice as they prepare to take on the Chicago Bears this upcoming Sunday with a spot in the playoffs on the line.

It's possible the Packers could also place linebacker Clay Matthews on injured reserve after re-injuring his thumb against the Steelers. If so, the Packers could have as many as three spots to fill on their 53-man roster, although there's no deadline or requirement for them to fill every spot.

Wide receiver Randall Cobb is a logical candidate to come off short-term injured reserve and be activated to the Packers roster, but like quarterback Aaron Rodgers, he has not yet been medically cleared to return.

There's also several candidates that could be called up from the Packers' practice squad, including wide receiver Tyrone Walker, who lead the team in receiving during the preseason.

And if the Packers decide to promote from their practice squad, they'll also have subsequent voids to fill there too.

It's possible the Packers make a decision on the status of Rodgers as soon as Tuesday, as hinted by head coach Mike McCarthy on Monday but how much they choose to share with the public remains unknown.

At the very least, Rodgers will be asked about his situation on his weekly radio show Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. CT on the ESPN Radio affiliates in Milwaukee and Madison and streamed live at ESPNWisconsin.com.

Then on Tuesday evening, the Mike McCarthy Show will air in certain markets across the Midwest at 6:30 p.m. CT, including on WGBA in Green Bay and WTMJ in Milwaukee. Complete listings can be found on the Packers official website.

it won't matter who plays if they don't stop those stupid penalties. how can have false start and off sides called at home when the offense should when ball the snaps. if they don't tighten up it won't pretty in Chicago.
