Packers Calendar: Rookie Minicamp Gets Underway

The newest members of the Packers begin practice Friday inside the team's Don Hutson Center.

The Green Bay Packers hold their annual rookie minicamp starting Friday inside the Don Hutson Center.

This year's draft class will join the undrafted free agents, tryout players and a handful of select veterans for two days of training. Minicamp will conclude on Saturday.

Prior to Friday, rookies traveled to Green Bay and once they arrived, orientation and meetings took place at various stages.

But for the first time on Friday, the newest members of the Packers will be on the field in action. They won't be wearing pads, but they will receive instruction from the coaching staff and go through drills and team work.

Traditionally, the Packers bring about 20 or so tryout players into town to compete for a handful of roster spots. As it currently stands, the Packers have filled 87 of a possible 90 spots, potentially leaving up to three berths open for the tryout types.

The Packers also traditionally incorporate a few inexperienced veterans to round out the rookie minicamp group, typically first-year players that were maybe on the practice squad but received little if any regular season playing time.

Media coverage of the rookie minicamp will begin Friday and last throughout the weekend.

with news surfacing about Colt Lyerla working out on a tryout basis, it should be an interesting camp.

He is a guy with top end talent, but top end off field issues.

At least there is no risk bringing him in on a tryout.

Lyerla is a total mess. Problem is with his talent he may actually make the team then abruptly quit like he did last fall at Oregon. Tread very carefully with this guy.
