Packers Calendar: NFL Supplemental Draft

The supplemental draft will take place at 1:00 p.m. ET time on Thursday and will feature six eligible players.

The NFL's supplemental draft takes place on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. ET, and as we noted at Cheesehead TV last week, the Green Bay Packers have a history with one of the six eligible prospects.

Back in April the Packers reportedly offered former South Alabama cornerback Damond Smith a tryout during their rookie orientation camp.

There's a big difference between offering a tryout and spending a draft choice on a player, however. Considering Smith's background in which he got into an on-field fight with a teammate and got suspended for testing positive for drugs, it would seem unlikely the Packers would invest a draft choice into him.

In the wake of the Aaron Hernandez murder trial, teams may be extra cautious on players with character risks.

Even if the Packers don't select him during the supplemental draft and he goes undrafted, he is free to sign with any team he chooses. It's possible Green Bay attempts to sign him without the investment of a draft choice.

After releasing linebacker Desmond Bishop go last month, the Packers have one spot open on their 90-man offseason roster.

The other five players eligible include Purdue wide receiver O.J. Ross, Houston wide receiver DeWayne Peace, UNLV defensive end/hybrid James Boyd, UCF defensive end/hybrid Toby Jackson and UNLV defensive tackle Nate Holloway. Like most supplemental draft prospects, most of them bring a degree of baggage with them.

If a team selects a player during Thursday's supplemental draft, they forfeit the corresponding draft choice in next April's regular NFL draft.

Also on Thursday is Packers cornerback Davon House's youth football camp being held in Las Cruces, N.M. where he played during his college days at New Mexico State.

More information on House's camp can be found at the website of USA Football's Fundamentals.
