Packers Calendar: NFL Owners Meetings Get Underway

The NFL's Competition Committee distributes its report on proposed rule changes on Monday in Orlando.

Is your bracket busted? After a weekend of basketball over-endulgence, it's time to get back to football...

On Monday, the annual NFL owners meetings get underway in Orlando for a week dedicated to proposed rule changes to other league announcements.

The league doesn't publish an agenda, but Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay said in a conference call with the media that Monday is set aside for distributing the league's Competition Committee Report.

"There are 13 playing rules that will be presented to the membership and there are seven bylaws that will be presented to the membership and one resolution that will all be presented through the Competition Committee – not all written by or proposed by the Competition Committee – but those are the ones that will be discussed in our report," said McKay, the chairman of the Competition Committee.

Several proposed rule changes will be discussed and potentially voted upon, including the alteration of the extra point, expansion of the playoffs, and broadening the impact of instant replay, just to name a few.

Owners, general managers and head coaches from across the league will be in attendance at the meetings, however, it was reported by ESPNWisconsin.com that Packers G.M. Ted Thompson will miss this year's meetings due to a personal matter but will still be working from team headquarters in Green Bay.

On Wednesday, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy will meet with the media for an hour-long session.

No exact time or date has been announced, but the owners meetings are when the NFL awards teams compensatory draft choices. The Packers should be receiving two for losing wide receiver Greg Jennings and linebacker Erik Walden in free agency last season with the exact round of the comp picks to be determined.

The NFL typically also announces key dates on the league calendar, such as the matchup of the league's Kickoff game on opening weekend. The Packers have been speculated as an opponent for the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.

Cheesehead TV will provide updates as the league meetings unfold, new rules are implemented and news breaks.

I'm guessing a 4th for Jennings and 6th for Walden. I don't think either guy will return a lower pick than that. I'm hoping for a 3rd and 5th for them.

yeah, I could see 4th and 6th or 4th and 7th for them.

I would love to see a 3rd for Jennings, and a 5th or 6th for Walden. I just don't think they will get it.

It's almost all about the money. The player and his performance play a very small part. Walden is a pretty bad player, IMO. But the Colts signed him for crazy money.

Walden got $4 mil per. That's above 7th round territory, which is closer to $2 mil per year. I'll be surprised if they get a 7th for him.

A few of the rules that I have heard about that I really like but could use some tweaking are:

49 vs 46 players active on gamedays not including sunday/Monday. Why limit it to Thursday games only?

Raising practice squad from 8-10 players. I like this a lot actually. I still wish they would add 1 spot to the roster or practice squad roster purely for QB development. If it was on the practice squad make it that other teams can't sign them. QB is the most important position in the league, and there isn't time or roster space to develop QB's. If they added something like that I think you would see teams being able to develop QB's better.

IR player to return rules. I understand that back in the day teams would stockpile rosters by putting key players on the IR. But the rule of 1 player to return from IR to me isn't right either. I would like to see at least 2-3 players being able to return.
Or, why not do something more like Baseball. Do a 15 day DL. Have the long term IR, and then also have a 15 day DL. So a player has to miss 2 games and can come back the 3rd or something... Allow 1-2 players to be on that list at a time.

Also the instant replay system needs to be revamped.

I like the talks of the rule changes, but I would like to see a few changes made to each that they are proposing.

I'll never understand why the NFL pays healthy players to sit out games. I get that you don't want banged up players that should be sitting things out to be dressed and risking worse injury. But surely that can be worked around to get all the healthy players into uniform for each and every game.

I imagine there were folks that thought free agency would never happen until it did.

Everything is open to be changed.

If they're seriously talking about moving the extra point back, then no change would shock me.

everyone seems to want change for change. Sometimes aren't we best leaving stuff alone?

I agree - the extra point is the biggest "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" issue. Peter King has himself a crusade for some reason.

exactly. I thought it was funny listening to Colin Cowherd one day. He was talking about that's a 45 second dead play. Well so what. So we are taking 45 seconds out of someone's life in watching an extra point.

To me they need to keep the core parts of the game the same. Everything else can be altered and should change as the game evolves.

In todays game the biggest talk is protecting players and player safety. Well if its that big of a deal then adjust roster sizes and injury rules to accommodate teams to allow the players time to heal and not rush them back from their injuries.
To me that is the thing I think they should look into vs. trying to change the extra point.

"I read that they didn't raise it to keep all the records and HOF meaningful and consistent."

I don't get how roster size would impact records?

If the NFL wants to open that Pandora's Box, they'll keep pushing for an 18-game season - 1,500 rushing seasons, 2,000 yard WR seasons and 5,000 yard QB seasons will be the norm.

Yeah, they already changed the length of season from 12 games to 16. If memory serves, there was an intermediate stop at 14 game seasons in there.

Playoffs have been expanded a couple of times too.

And the league wasn't always 32 teams, either.

The passing game was fundamentally altered when they put in the 5 yard for contact rule.

When it comes to consistency of the record book, that ship sailed 50 years ago.

Changing the rules about returning from IR in conjunction with revising game day inactives would seem to go hand in hand.
