Packers Calendar: Franchise Tag Deadline

The Packers have until 3 p.m. Central time to place the franchise tag on Matt Flynn, if such a scenario is going to happen.

If Matt Flynn is going to get hit with the franchise tag and subsequently traded away, today is the day it's going to happen. Or at the least the framework for a deal would happen today.

Monday at 3 p.m. Central time is the deadline for all NFL teams to place either franchise or transition tags on a player. Many have already done so and more may happen before the day is done.

A trade can't technically be executed until the first day of the league year on Mar. 13.

The only way the Packers would use the franchise tag on Flynn is if A) they can find a partner willing to compensate the Packers more than the value of a third round pick in next year's Draft and B) Flynn agrees to a new, less costly, contract.

All three parties have to agree to the terms, which is no easy task. And if no deal happens, the Packers will likely receive a third round compensatory draft choice in 2013 as a result of free agent losses anyway.

It would behoove general manager Ted Thompson to make every attempt to make sure he can receive more for Flynn, but it's not his choice and his choice alone.

There's even a less likely scenario in which the Packers could place the transition tag on center Scott Wells as a way to spur talks of a reasonable long-term contract, but the risks of doing so may prohibit it from happening, which is paying Wells roughly $8.5 million for one year, a salary that could prevent the Packers from signing or extending other contracts.

Although the likelihood of the Packers using one of their tags is slim, it's not out of the question. But the countdown is on and the clock is ticking.

"Although the likelihood of the Packers using one of their tags is slim"

At this point we definitely have to think so, TT is not really a last minute kinda guy.

I still say if I am Matt Flynn's agent I would instantly shoot down all talk of cooperating with a tag and trade. It's just not in Matt Flynn's best interest take less money by narrowing the potential employer pool and then weakening his new team by making them hand over picks.

Not going to happen.

Flynn and Wells are gone. We get two extra 3rd round picks next year.

I thought J.Jones was gone last year, too. Fortunately (unless you're D. Driver) the Bears thought they were set at WR last year. Wells might be back; and if he is, it will be at a market-proven contract, not his, nor TT's numbers.

Flynn has been worth the draft choice and miniscule contract that he's had. Good luck, you example number 43 of the Packers being a good organization to be a part of.

No. The bares didn't think they were set at WR. They, for some reason, signed Roy Williams. Lol, great get.

Once again we put way too much hope and faith in TT. It is just wonderful having a 3rd round pick next year when we needed to move up in the draft this year. I guess that is TTs idea, build through the Draft picks that we have. May-be it is me or did I not see a HUGE collapse of our Defense last year by not signing Jenkins. How in the world do you think that next year is going to be any better? We had to do something amazing to move up in the draft this year, and it was based on a special player that we had (Mat), that we should have used as a bargaining chip.

And for all we know, Ted Thompson worked like a madman to get a trade done. If another team wasn't willing to trade for him, what can the Packers do?

Your logic is why the Cowboys and Redskins have become irrelevant since the turn of the century.

Also, Whitehurst, Cassel, and Kolb have made teams very wary of backup QBs

Teams that can't develop it's own QB are shocked when they trade for a backup QB and can't do anything with them either. Wonders never cease.
