Packers Calendar: First Eligible Practice for J.C. Tretter

The Packers offensive lineman can practice for the first time this season on Wednesday after being placed on short-term injured reserve.

Wednesday is not only the first day of practice this week as the Green Bay Packers prepare to meet the Carolina Panthers this upcoming weekend.

Wednesday also represents the first day offensive lineman J.C. Tretter is eligible to practice since being placed as the team's only player on the short-term injured reserve list during Week 1 of the season.

It was reported Tretter suffered a fracture in his knee during the preseason.

Rules stipulate that Tretter would not be eligible to practice until after Week 6 at the earliest and not be eligible to play until after Week 8. Tretter is not required to practice.

Last week Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said of Tretter, "I really don't have an update for you, but I can tell you that he does look good in just the limited amount of time I've seen him inside the Hutson Center."

Packers rookie center Corey Linsley has capably handled the starting center position in Green Bay since Tretter was injured, making it questionable whether Tretter ever gets the starting job back that he held during training camp.

The Packers will also release their first injury report of the week on Wednesday, and the status of several players that were injured in the most recent game at Miami will be of particular attention.

Cornerbacks Tramon Williams (ankle) and Sam Shields (knee) and linebacker Jamari Lattimore (neck) all left the Dolphins game and did not return.

Without Williams and Shields in particular, the Packers depth at the cornerback position will be tested.

McCarthy will have an update following practice with a press conference to be aired live at approximately 1:35 p.m. CT on Packers.com.

Also on Wednesday, former Packers safety LeRoy Butler will represent the organization at the Bellin Health-Bellevue flu clinic in Green Bay from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., according to the team's official website.

And during the evening hours, The Brandon Bostick Show will air on 107.5 FM and 1400 AM WDUZ in Green Bay at 6:00 p.m. and streamed live on TheFan1075.com.

The Packers tight end will act as co-host and welcome a player guest. Fans are welcome to be part of the live audience as the show records from the Sports Pub at Thornberry Creek in Oneida, Wis.

Can't remember. Does anyone know, does tretter have any other o line experience? Can he be of any other use since linsley has done so well? Hate to see either one warming a bench after seeing good play from both. IMO at this point in the season you don't switch centers out from any qb unless injury or play requiers. Best not to upset the rhythm. Gotta give props to the kid. I was truly nervous week 1 with a rookie in front of A rod. Way better than I expected.

It is a good sign that Tretter practiced at the first opportunity. GB could have waited with no penalty if Tretter was not physically healthy yet. I agree with DannyDS that Tretter is more physically talented, but likely won't replace Linsley unless Tretter clearly proves he can play center better. Ties go to Linsley and continuity, IMO. I too, thought Linsley was strictly a center, but he has shown better movement skills than I thought he had. Looks to me like Linsley can be a back-up guard; I am not sure whether he can be a decent starting NFL guard. With Lang and Sitton, I hope we never need to find out. I hope that we can jettison Lane Taylor and Gerhart soon.
