Packers Calendar: East-West Shrine Game Weigh-In
Members of the Packers scouting staff will be in Florida on Monday for the weigh-in of the East-West Shrine Game.
With the Green Bay Packers season over, focus is now on trying to find the newest members of the team, and the all-star game circuit heats up this week with the East-West Shrine Game and NFLPA Collegiate Bowl both taking place.
The Packers will have members of their scouting staff at both locations, getting a look at prospects in an up-close environment, watching them practice and getting to know them in one-on-one interviews.
Things get underway Monday morning in St. Petersburg, Fla. at the Shrine Game where player weigh-ins will be taking place:

Scouts of the Packers and all NFL teams will be getting an accurate read on measurements such as height, weight, arm length and hand size.
Later Monday afternoon, the first day of practices will take place at local St. Petersburg high schools with the East and West teams taking the field for the first time.

Back in Wisconsin, the season finale of the Packers talk show Clubhouse Live takes place in Appleton in front of a live studio audience at the Clubhouse Sports Bar and Grill at 6:30 p.m. CT and streamed live on ClubhouseLive.com.

It seems like the talent at the East/West Shrine game has gone downhill a bit the last few years, but you can still find some good players there.
There are a few players that I want to keep an eye on. As a Badger fan, I am looking forward to seeing all the Badger players.
A few others that I am looking forward to seeing how they do are, Matt Hazel 6'3 WR from Coastal Carolina and Jeremy Gallon, 5'8 WR from Michigan. I was impressed watching Hazel play, and Gallon I think could possibly be a return specialist on the next level.
I have heard of good things from Western Kentucky's ILB Andrew Jackson. I haven't seen him play, but heard he is a heat seeking missile of a LB. Question about him is in pass coverage. I am looking forward to seeing him as well..
And as always, just who jumps out.

Packer-centric discussion of college all-star games needs to focus heavily on ILB and Safety. Everyone is up in arms about the Safety play in GB. Rightfully so. It has been an issue dating back to Sharper/Butler duo. This year the stench was especially bad. Not addressing this position in a meaningful way would be a huge mistake that will leave us having the same discussions this time next year.
But you can't play good 3-4 defense with Brad Jones and AJ Hawk at ILB. The Packers must get better there. They need to find a guy with the speed to cover, at least a little bit. They simply must upgrade one spot and better still would be to upgrade both. I don't see that improvement coming from within. Again, not addressing this positional group in a meaningful way would be a huge mistake that will leave us having the same discussions this time next year.
I have no clue about the draft depth at those two spots. But those are needs 1 & 1a (in either order, IMO) in GB now that it seems clear Capers is staying and so is the 3-4. Nothing else is even close, IMO.

I agree that those positions need to be addressed but I wouldn't count out the possibility that answers could come from w/in. Lattimore showed some playmaking ability at ILB but was very inconsistent. If he gains consistency, in much the same way Bishop did, he could be the answer at ILB. Also at Safety, I love Richardsons athleticism. His testing at the combine is equal to that of a 1st rd pick. But he's very inexperienced in coverage and will need to improve that a lot in order to be the answer at Safety.
Both players could be the answer at those positions, but its not something I want to count on.

I guess anything is possible but neither guy excites me. Lattimore did a little bit until he had to play week 17. Ugh. Maybe it was just a bad game. But it put the notion in my head that I just want ANY alternative to what was playing. And I can't get it out.
I do think Hyde would make a good safety. Or close enough to good to be a massive improvement. He doesn't have ideal speed but he's got the ball skills to be ok, at least.

Agree. Be nice to have confidence in someone already on the roster at these positions but given they are such a glaring weakness I'd hate to bet the bank that anyone currently on the roster will be much better than what we have. I just can't see the defense improving in a meaningful measure until the safety and ILB spots are upgraded. Our ILBs are slow and soft and our safeties are just plain rotten.

The defense will improve from just being healthy. Can't afford to keep losing both starting OLB's, and expect to have a big time pass rush. In this scheme the main pass rushers are the OLB's, and when both are hurt most of the season, it really impacts the defense. With no pass rush, this affects the backend of the defense.
After they get healthy, I think they need to improve 2 positions - ILB & S. Brad Jones and MD Jennings are the weak links on the defense.
I like Stroh like Richardson and Lattimore. I saw something special out of Lattimore when he went in for Jones, but never got it back.
But for me, I am not going into next season banking on those 2 players dramatically improving. I want insurance with better players, who can at least create competition.

There's only one way to go at safety. It can't get any worse so the arrow is pointing up. Even 1 int will be an improvement. Can u imagine 2 or 3 picks? And lets say 10 to 20 less missed tackles. Massive improvement. Could even decide the outcome of a game or 2. MAN, THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT!!!. How's that for homer optimism?

I'd be curious as to how many times a safety even touched the ball the entire year. I remember a fumble recovery by Burnett and a tipped pass at the end of the Cowboy game by him too.... after that...I got nothing. Oh-- and Jennings spazzing on the Hyde forced fumble in the playoffs.
