Packers Calendar: Decompression Day

In a change from previous years, NFL teams have a day off before trying to set their 53-man rosters by the deadline on Saturday.

There's change in the NFL preseason calendar in 2013.

Last year the last round of preseason games were played on Aug. 30. Teams had to turnaround the very next day and trim their rosters to 53 players.

There was very little time to evaluate injuries, let alone player performance from the game the day before. Teams had less than 24 hours to make snap decisions on their rosters.

This year, Friday is a day off.

League-wide, teams have the luxury to determine the extent of injuries and how they might impact their rosters. They have time to take a closer look at game film on the players fighting for the last berths.

There's nothing preventing teams from trimming down to 53 players, but most will wait until Saturday when the deadline comes at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Perhaps Friday becomes "Trading Day" in the NFL seeing as general managers have time on their hands to engage in discussion. The Packers certainly would love to trade one of their tight ends, probably either D.J. Williams or Brandon Bostick, maybe both.
