Packers Calendar: Damond Smith Pro Day

The former South Alabama cornerback eligible for the NFL's Supplemental Draft will work out in front of scouts Tuesday in Michigan.

Supplemental draft prospect Damond Smith will reportedly hold a pro day workout on Tuesday in his native Michigan, as we noted last week here at Cheesehead TV.

As the story goes, the Green Bay Packers offered the former South Alabama cornerback a tryout at their rookie orientation camp back in April before learning he was not eligible.

In light of the Aaron Hernandez murder case, it will be interesting to see whether the Packers (and other NFL teams in general) are willing to take a chance on a player with character risks. Smith left two collegiate programs, one following an on-field fight with a teammate, and another after failing a drug test.

It would seem unlikely that the Packers spend even a seventh-round draft choice on Smith, but the risk involved in signing Smith after the draft (should he go undrafted) is minimal.

Now that the Packers have released linebacker Desmond Bishop, they currently have 89 of 90 offseason roster spots filled. There's room for Smith, or any other supplemental draft prospect, should the Packers choose to sign them.

There's been no indication that the Packers will have a scout in attendance at Smith's pro day workout, but there's been no indication that they won't either.

The NFL's supplemental draft will take place on Thursday July 11 at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Wouldn't it be ironic that he ends up being mediocre just like several other d backs the team has. How many projects can they take on. Its time former projects start producing or this team isn't going far.
