Packers Announce McCarthy's Contract Extension

The Packers have given head coach Mike McCarthy a contract extension.

As had been reported by Bob McGinn several weeks ago, the Packers made Mike McCarthy's contract extension official this afternoon.

From the team:

The Green Bay Packers have signed Head Coach Mike McCarthy  to a new multi-year contract, team Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson announced Friday.

McCarthy, who recently concluded his fifth season as head coach, guided the Packers to a Super Bowl XLV win over the Pittsburgh Steelers  as Green Bay became only the second No. 6 seed since 1990 to win the world championship. He joined Vince Lombardi and Mike Holmgren as the only coaches in franchise history to lead the Packers to a Super Bowl title.

“We are very pleased to finalize this agreement with Mike,” Thompson said. “He’s a good football coach, a good leader, and a good man. I look forward to working with Mike into the future.”

“I want to thank the Green Bay Packers, especially Mark Murphy and Ted Thompson, for the continued commitment and confidence they have shown in our program,” McCarthy said.

“We were very excited to bring the Lombardi Trophy back home this past season, and we look forward to the challenge of continuing to improve as a football team and adding to the championship legacy here. My family and I love being in Green Bay. It’s always going to be my home, and we are very happy to continue to be a part of this community.”

Tom Silverstein reports that the extension should take McCarthy's salary from $4 million a year to around $5 million a year. Also from Silverstein comes the news that the entire assistant coaching staff had their contracts extended as well:

According to a league source, the Packers signed all of their assistants, including coordinators Joe Philbin and Dom Capers, to one-year extensions that run through 2012.

With McCarthy in the fold the Packers now have their general manager, head coach and starting quarterback all under contract for the next four years (Aaron Rodgers' deal expires after the 2014 season) Clearly, the window is wide open on the teams' ability to keep brining championships back to Green Bay.

"keep brining championships back to Green Bay."

I'll take my championships with reduced salt, thanks.

This is good news, if expected. Dom to a longer deal would be nice.

I would like to see Dom get a more important role in the coaching hierarchy and a long term extension too. I know Winston Moss is already Assistant HC, but man... Dom deserves it and I'm afraid we'll lose him to a team that wants to pay him 7 mil a year for DC and AHC jobs...
