Packers Add Josh Gordy To Roster
The Packers also added wide receiver Terrance Smith and defensive end/linebacker Curtis Young to the practice squad.
In addition to the previously reported addition of linebacker Robert Francois, the Green Bay Packers also elevated practice squad cornerback Josh Gordy to the 53-man roster.
Gordy has been on the Packers' practice squad for the past 10 games. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he spent much of the 2010 preseason. Gordy will wear No. 40.
Francois and Gordy take the place of linebacker Brandon Chillar and tight end Spencer Havner who were both placed on season-ending injured reserve yesterday. Green Bay has 13 players on injured reserve this season.
The Packers also announced the signings of wide receiver Terrance Smith and defensive end/linebacker Curtis Young to replace Francois and Gordy on the practice squad.
Smith is 6-0, 195-pound rookie from South Carolina State who had originally signed with the Jacksonville Sharks of the AFL, but whose season hadn't yet begun. He had 40 catches for 542 yards (13.6 avg.) and four touchdowns as a senior. Smith will wear No. 13.
Young is a 6-1, 270-pound rookie from Cincinnati who fits the definition of a "hybrid" defensive lineman/outside linebacker. He appeared in one game with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL this season. As a senior in college, he tallied 50 tackles, including 11 for a loss. Young will wear No. 60.

That interview Brian had with Josh Gordy was awesome on Railbird Central a few weeks back.

As I just tweeted, Josh Gordy is a 4.38 speed guy who declares himself a great tackler. Bringing him up sounds like a STs move to me, considering we just IR'd two guys who were figured as core ST'ers.
If he's truly a "great" tackler, he's gotta be considered as a Gunner on punts, I'd figure.

Sounds like a poor man's Sam Shields.
December 01, 2010 at 05:55 pm
Except Gordy was a 4-year starter at CB in college while Shields was a converted WR who played just one year at CB before the pros, Shields isn't known for his tackling per se.
They are both very fast, although Shields, if he truly ran a 4.28 as he claims, is a "whole 'nuther" kind of fast.
But yeah, this Gordy kid could arguably replace any duties that Shields may currently have on ST's if need be, theoretically speaking, anyways.
As Brian C. pointed out elsewhere, it may be difficult for Gordy to make the active gameday roster, however.

Lol poor man's Sam Shields! My gut reaction is this sounds too much like Giordono from last season. Even if he's not a rebranded Matt Giordono, Gordy is not a bad ass name. Although the prospect of a speedy-sure tackler could win us some games through ST duties.

Sure would have liked to see one of those 2 roster spots used on a return specialist.
December 01, 2010 at 03:11 pm
I hope you're being sarcastic...
December 01, 2010 at 04:59 pm
I wasn't. Why?
December 01, 2010 at 08:09 pm
1) No point in having a return specialist if there's no one to block for him.
2) Who's available to sign that's proven himself any better than Shields?
December 01, 2010 at 08:21 pm
1. True. But besides my point.
2. No idea. But I'm not talking about Shields. I'm talking about Tramon (they could use Shields on punts, but I don't trust him). I'm sure there isnt an all-pro returner out there looking for a job. But surely there is someone who has return experience who isn't our newly signed all-pro cornerback (who isn't that good at returning to begin with). That's all I'm saying.

We have to play Gordy RIGHT NOW! He could be the next James Starks!

This is awesome

You mean The Ring Maker.
December 01, 2010 at 03:36 pm
And you people wanted Al Harris...
December 01, 2010 at 05:40 pm
What do you mean "you people"?
December 01, 2010 at 05:58 pm
I think he means Jews, but I'm not sure. Antisemitism is on the rise on Packers blogs, I just read an article about in "Full of Garbage Weekly".
December 01, 2010 at 06:37 pm
I believe the correct response is:"Who the hell is we people?"
December 01, 2010 at 09:43 pm
Good nickname. Still going with "land baron's full of crocs" in my next FF team...
December 01, 2010 at 09:41 pm
Shalom, first of all.
And, yeah, that's what I meant. And it's not about them, but the fact that they don't eat pig... It's inhumane.
That, and the tattoos...

My father converted long before I was born, and I never did ask him why he left Judaism, but he DID eat a lot of pork. I think the lure of "the other white meat" was too strong for him. I personally couldn't imagine being constrained from eating that lovely meat. Dad, Thanks for raising me Christian.. The religion I could take or leave, but the menu selection is awesome.
This is a true story. :)

haha I was just going to say that PackersRS. Apparently Gordy is better than Al Harris. I get the Shields is progressing as a nickel back argument, but knowing Pat Lee could get injured again should have been on the back of the mind of McCarthy.
That being said, Al Harris isn't necessarily lighting it up in Miami, but from what I hear he's been pretty darn solid. Peter King wrote something about him on MMQB about how good his tackling is. FWIW!
December 01, 2010 at 06:03 pm
It's usually not a great sign when an article about a CB is praising how good of a tackler the player is. ;)
REgardless of how good Al Harris is or isn't playing, he is virtually guaranteed to never be as good as it once was. He should be on the downward slope.
December 01, 2010 at 06:35 pm
"...how good his tackling is."
Al Harris ??
I remember an Al Harris that tickled people to the sidelines, or butt-pinched them out-of-bounds -- or on rare occasion, a saddle-up for a 5-10 yard ride.
And while I remember an Al Harris that returned a playoff interception to victory -- I also remember an Al Harris who jawed/argued/acted-a-fool, while getting owned by Plaxico "I'm SHOT" Burress.

You people were asking who you people were?
December 01, 2010 at 06:07 pm
I wonder if he's related to Barry Gordy?
