Tramon not in the bad or the ugly? He did not play well last night (though it was against Reggie Wayne for much of the night).

Name me another corner in the league that does look good against Reggie Wayne and Peyton Manning? When you have Woodson opposite you, you are going to get thrown at and you are going to give up plays. I can live with that. The one play I thought he should have made was on the Wayne TD. Giving up inside leverage is a cardinal sin there.

Wasn't Woodson mostly roaming last night? I don't remember him sticking on a man consistently. Your point still stands that teams will throw wherever Woodson isn't, and Tramon would be wherever Woodson isn't.

I think a lot of people are thinking Tramon was terrible because they don't realize that at times they were in a zone, and therefore Tramon was supposed to release Wayne to Burnett or Collins. It was more about Manning easily deciphering the coverage and finding seams than it was Tramon getting beat.

Maybe I'm expecting too much of Tramon, playing the level that Al Harris did.

I don't remember him playing really well EVER, though.

Aaron, re-watch the protection on the Rodgers pass to Finley where he was wide open in the end zone, and tell me BJax was "bad." I know he fumbled, but his protection more than made up for it.

You fumble you get put in the bad. Grant is given a pass because he never should have been out there after the hit to his helmet.

I love BJax, and have called for him to get more carries and have lauded his pass blocking for years. But if you fumble, inside the opponents 15 yard line no less, you get put in the Bad. No question.

Dude, he stoned TWO Colts on that play I mentioned, and had to move his feet and whip around to get the second one. That one play was a clinic on pass protection by a HB. Although he had to do it because Tauscher blew it twice....

So did Ryan Grant get a bad or ugly in that seahawks playoff game? He had 2 fumbles and looked terrible for the first 5 minutes, then looked like Jim Brown for the last 55 minutes, 200 yards and 200 TD's. One play can ruin your day no doubt, but at the same time saying you fumble you're bad or ugly seems a little near sighted.

Yeah, Sanders should have been flagged for leading with his helmet on that helmet-to-helmet play. It's a clearly dangerous tackle. Bob Sanders played dirty all night.

No worries he will not be playing come week 3, those are the plays that he usually ends up out for the season. He hurts himself more than others because his body is soft. He will not be playing for too much longer unless he realizes that at some point just tackling somebody can be all that is needed.

Probably because he fell down on the opening play from scrimmage and left a HUGE gap in which Addai scurried off to the races. And he was beaten in coverage a few times over the middle.

reasons why i have always been a fan of hawk starting.. might not be the best in coverage.. but he would not have let that run happen.. chillar is not a starter.. case closed.. he is a real good back up that is a good choice on passing downs.. but hawk is definitely our best option if he doesnt start. mcccarthy is making a mistake id rather work on hawk running zone coverage or just send him on a blitz or have him spy on the qb than put chillar in for the majority of snaps.. chillar makes no big plays ever... hawk has more INTS than chillar does and hawk is "terrible" in coverage.. hawk is a quality starter.. hopefully people reailze he isnt as bad as they think after we watch chillar suck it up for a few games

has chillar ever really looked that good? i was incredibly confused when they signed him to that decent contract...i remember a few times last year when he looked terrible in coverage. isn't that supposed to be his strength? trade for a LB and make chillar a back up.

I only saw the 4th quarter. When watching Harrell my thoughts were "wow, that's the 3rd string quarterback". Considering he has only been here a short time I thought that drive was amazing.

Harrell really has shown a lot of improvement in these last 2 games, but there is no way that the Packers carry 3 QB's on the 53 man roster. Still a pretty good chance he clears waivers and ends up on the practice squad.

To start the game, it appeared the defense was playing zone and lose coverge. As Capers opened up a bit the performance of the DB's improved. The way the defense went from a porus non-entity for three drives to an aggressive turnover oriented machine the rest of the game was encouraging.

Finley is definetely a candidte for the good.

One thing that didn't come back in this game? The cushion.

There were no cushion. The CBs were getting beat sometimes, but not because of cushion.

Exactly. That was the best news of the night as far as I'm concerned. Like you said, at least the DB's weren't giving the Colts an automatic 6 yards every time they lined up to pass. The nickel spot is still a pretty big concern and there was no shortage of holes in the secondary, but it was nice to see Tramon & Co. play closer to the line of scrimmage.

AJ.. AJ.. AJ... should be the starter.. even having ankle issues this week watchin him he was still at the ball carrier as the tackle is being made... and he was in when teh colts were tryin to pass the ball to come back from behind. i did not see him get beat badly in coverage.. (mind you he saw backsups) they werent pickin him apart. he was always around the play when he was in.. did he make a lot of tackles? no.. but he is like brian urlacher in a lot of ways.. if he doesnt make the tackle he is standing right next to the play when it happens... which is important. cause if the runningback makes a play hawk is there. he needs to be our starter

yes i did.. they have similar play styles to one another.. is hawk as good as urlacher? no. not by any means.. but they play the same way. strong against the run weak against the pass.. always in on a lot of tackles. but arent usually the guys that make big plays. they are similiar.. not the same

I couldn't resist...

A.J. Hawk: 64 career starts. 399 comb tackles. 8.5 sacks. 5 ints. 0 TDs. 2 FF.

Brian Urlacher: 133 career starts. 934 comb. tackles. 37.5 sacks. 17 ints. 1 TD. 9 FF.

A.J. Hawk avg/game: 6.2 comb. tackles. 0.13 sacks, 0.07 ints, 0.03 FF
Brian Urlacher avg/game: 7.02 comb. tackles. 0.28 sacks, 0.12 ints, 0.06 FF

Urlacher's numbers essencially DOUBLE Hawk's, except in tackles.

andrew harman's picture

August 29, 2010 at 09:23 pm

yes his numbers do double hawks.. but hawk is also young.. doesnt have as many starts as urlacher does.. and urlacher never comes off the field.. and hawk does.. so the numbers wont be the same.. and to oppy.. i understand what defense he plays.. watch him play sometime.. he is better stopping the run than he is stopping the pass.. he makes a lot of tackles when the ball is thrown to the middle of the field.. hawk can do that too?... the big plays urlacher has made happened more as he got older.. which i believe hawk will do as well if he gets the amount of time he deserve on the field.. the tackling numbers are close to eachother.. fumble forced numbers is a small difference .03 .06.. doubled yes.. but its a small difference.. the only real difference is INT number.. adn its hard to get a lot of them when u dont play in the nickle d.. i think you would see more INTS out of hawk if he was left in. you make a solid point and im not disagreeing i do think urlacher is the better of the two and i did say that.. i said they are similiar.. and i stand by that

"Strong against the run, weak against the pass"

Andrew, Brian Urlacher is a MLB in a Tampa-2 defense. His main responsibility in base defense is the medium-to-deep zone in the middle of the field between the safeties, first and foremost. Urlacher's most generic assignment in his role is "Play pass first, react to run".

It's the preseason. Defense will always look bad since they are not really gameplanning. They don't really make adjustments. If this were a real game you would probably have seen Woodson on Wayne most of the night. Same goes with the Colts D. They looked bad because most of the time they wanted to just run their base and see what the players can do. Don't want to run a scheme that makes up for a players deficiencies in the preseason, because then you will have less of an idea of how good they really are.

Regarding BJax, he deserves the Bad for the fumble. His pass protection kept him out of the Ugly. You have RBs to carry the ball first, not block on pass plays

Manning really hates the new protect the Umpire Rule. They are really cutting into his ability to get the quick plays off. I'm afraid I agree with hime. The officials looked like a bunch of stumbling fools out there. Bad rule dump it. Umpires are a dime a dozen. Just have a few spares in the equipment bag for each game.

I agree, that rule is idiotic. But Peyton often looks pissed off and disgusted on the sidelines. He's tried to blame his team mates for stuff too. He's overrated, imo. I also think he tends to overprepare for big games and psych himself out a bit.

It appears everyone is forgetting Reggie Wayne is a TOP 5 WR. The two plays he got big yardage was on a Zone play, where Manning threw over Williams and under Collins.(Not many know this because they don't understand the defense) On the other play Williams and Woodson had the call mixed up. You take away those two plays and everyone would think Williams had a nice game.
When did Al Harris become a starter? I think it was his 5th season? Give the young guys some time to adjust. With more reps I think everyone will be fine.
Fans tend to give up on the young guys too soon. It's week to week with fans. One week you like the player and the next you will find anything to knock them about. Patience is the key.
If Dallas Clark had played, Woodson would've been matched up on him most of the game.
