Packers 46-Man Roster Prediction for Week 11 at Giants

Offensive lineman Don Barclay is listed as "questionable" for Sunday's game. Cheesehead TV has the prediction whether he'll play.

Here's our best guess at predicting the Green Bay Packers' game-day roster for Sunday's Week 11 game at the New York Giants. Reminder, only 46 players can be active...

The entire roster is included. Those bold and italicized are predicted to be inactive...

Quarterback: Aaron Rodgers, Scott Tolzien, Matt Flynn

Running back: Eddie Lacy, John Kuhn, James Starks, Johnathan Franklin

Wide receiver: Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin, Myles White, Chris Harper

Tight end: Andrew Quarless, Ryan Taylor, Brandon Bostick, Jake Stoneburner

Offensive line: David Bakhtiari, Josh Sitton, Evan Dietrich-Smith, T.J. Lang, Don Barclay, Marshall Newhouse, Lane Taylor, Derek Sherrod

Defensive line: Datone Jones, B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, C.J. Wilson, Johnny Jolly, Mike Daniels, Josh Boyd

Outside linebacker: Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Mike Neal, Nate Palmer, Andy Mulumba

Inside linebacker: A.J. Hawk, Brad Jones, Jamari Lattimore

Cornerback: Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde, Davon House, Jarrett Bush, James Nixon

Safety: Morgan Burnett, M.D. Jennings, Jerron McMillian, Chris Banjo

Special teams: Mason Crosby, Tim Masthay, Brett Goode

Commentary:

  • Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) and Casey Hayward (hamstring) have been ruled "out" for Sunday's game against the Giants.
  • Nick Perry (foot/ankle) is listed as "doubtful" for the Giants game and is not predicted to play.
  • Don Barclay (knee) and Andy Mulumba (ankle) are "questionable" and are the toughest players to predict whether they'll play. The guess here is they won't be available as the Packers err on the side of caution.
  • Clay Matthews (thumb), Mike Neal (abdomen), Sam Shields (hamstring), Johnny Jolly (groin), Ryan Pickett (knee) and Evan Dietrich-Smith (knee) are all listed as "probable" and it's predicted all of them will be available for duty.
  • If Barclay is out, Derek Sherrod could see his first action in nearly two full seasons. He's predicted to be active for the first time this season.
  • Matt Flynn will be active as the team's backup quarterback for the first time this season.
  • After being inactive for the past two games, C.J. Wilson is back to being active for a defense that's gotten slashed against the run as of late.
  • James Nixon is predicted to get the last active slot ahead of Chris Harper, although it's a close call.

Agree with you 100% isn't it weird we are hoping a guy who hasn't played in almost two years gets the nod over a guy who was a starter for almost two years.. Newhouse simply can't play..

I agree. Sherrod showed nothing before his injury so lets see once and for all if our two and a half year wait was worth it. My take, the guy should be home watching football not playing it. Hope I'm wrong.

Sherrod shouldn't see the field this year. He's barely played since his Sr year at MSU. If he plays this year it will be due only to injury and if that happens I wouldn't expect too much. You don't knock off the rust of nearly 3 yrs in a month or 2. Hopefully he isn't forced to play this year. If he can just get some practice and come in during the offseason healthy I expect him to become a starter. He's a natural pass blocking LT. He has some warts tho. He isn't a great run blocker and he isn't as aggressive as you would like him to be. Very much in the Chad Clifton mold. Can be a very good pass blocking LT but he'll never be more than average run blocking.

"You don’t knock off the rust of nearly 3 yrs in a month or 2."

Stroh, you underestimate these guys. Most of these guys have been playing football since 5 years old. It's all they do. They only know one thing. It's like riding a fucking bike Stroh. Sherrod can step in tomorrow and play just fine. It's not rocket science.

Look at Johnny fucking Jolly. Addicted to codeine and was in jail for three years. Comes back for training camp and is starting in a little less than 2 months of practice. Sherrod will be just fine. Quit overreacting and acting like blocking some guy in front of you is impossible if you are out for a while. If his leg is fine he's an upgrade over Newhouse and Barclay.

DT for Jolly is mostly about aggression. AT OT Sherrod has to use a lot of technique. That technique wasn't fully ingrained in him even before he got injured as a rookie. It hasn't been used in about 2 full years. Jolly also had the techniques down from playing the same scheme/techniques from his previous stint. You make it out to be far more simplistic than it is! I wouldn't mind seeing Sherrod on the field some this year, but it would be foolish to think or expect him to just pick up where he left off, which w/ the Packers was square one when he got injured!

Stroh, I don't expect Sherrod to "pick up where he left off", I expect him to be much better than when he was a rookie. Just being around the game now he's not a rookie. He knows how to play the game Stroh, it's not rocket science. You make it out to be much more than what it is. The mental part is the hardest. He has that down pat. The actual playing is the easiest part of the game. He will do just fine.

By your standards I wouldn't expect to see Bulaga on the field next year since he's missed basically two years in a row just like Sherrod yet you have him penciled in at right tackle next Sept. Yes, Bulaga has missed almost the same as Sherrod now yet you don't say squat about him not being able to come back and play.

You are totally obsessed with coddling Sherrod. It's about time the Packers get a little back on their investment. I say play the man now damnit!!

You don't learn on the sidelines Longshanks. You learn by playing! Sherrod has a handful of NFL snaps. He knows the offense better, but knowing the offense and being able to execute the techniques are VERY different things.

You don't get better as a player by being injured for over 2 years! Its asinine to think he'll be better now after a major injury and missing 2 full years.

Bulaga hasn't missed much in training camp and the offseason. And between injuries he got to hone his techiniques each offseason. This stuff is pretty much common sense. That you don't understand it is beyond ridiculous.

Why the hell do you thing football players spend as much as 12-14 hrs a day on nothing but football?

Face it Stroh, you are coddling Sherrod. Why I don't have a clue. You are afraid to see him play. You are afraid your dream of starting Bulaga and Sherrod at tackles next season and Bakh on the bench won't happen. Anybody who's worth a damn can step in even after a long absence and play.

Jesus Christ, Tolzein is starting tomorrow. What more do you need? He's had three years of mental reps. Sherrod is healthy now, he's worth a damn and can play now. Are you his mother Stroh? Oh, I forgot, technique. Sherrod has to use alot of technique. Ah, ok.

PLAY THE MAN!! If anything play him just to piss off Stroh!! lol

I'm not coddling him at all. I just know thst playing the game at the NFL is very demanding in every way. Physically mentally emotionally... And it takes expertise in technique to succeed. Apparently you haven't got a freakin clue. This isn't high school fir christs sake!

"This isn’t high school fir christs sake!"

Exactly Stroh!! This isn't high school, this is Sherrod's job and because of that I am not worried about him coming in unprepared or unable to do his job. He's a no. 1 pick and he's healthy finally. Three years sitting on the sidelines picking his nose. You don't think he wants and needs to get out there?

Bakhtiari went in on day one and won the position in the first week of camp if you go back and ask Campen if he was to be honest. Why is it not possible for Sherrod to do the same after going thru the mental reps for the past three years? I think you are coddling him Stroh. As Dick Vermeil once said to Larry Johnson, "it's time to take the diapers off".

If you knew any F'in thing, you would know that the entire time Sherrod was in IR or PUP, which was all the time for the past 2+ yrs he couldn't practice, he had to focus his energy on rehab of his injury. Mental reps help him know the playbook, but there is absolutely NO substitute for being on the field for a young player. The techniques used in HS are much more basic than those in college, just as the techniques used in college are much more basic than the ones used in the NFL!

Your a fool if you think Sherrod w/ virtually no NFL practice under his belt is going to be ready to start immediately in the NFL!!

Sherrod has never had an NFL training camp to speak of. Rookie year was strike shortented and missed the past couple due to injury. Did you happen to notice how much Hayward struggled this year since he missed virtually all of training camp? Its a HUGE deal for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players to have training camp.

The brief look we got at Sherrod was quite uninspiring.

Gonna go out on a limb and say he won't be any sort of savior for this team.

If he ever plays again he will essentially be the equivalent of Barclay or Newhouse.

He seems soft.

B. We'll see how Lacy does without a passing game to set him up.
C. Remember when I predicted 6-10? I do!
D. Remember when I called for the start of the Clowney watch before week 1? I do.
E. Wake me up when the Packers beat a team that doesn't suck.
F. You can also go ahead and wake me up when MM coaches his team to a "W" without the help of a hall of fame QB.
G. Prepare yourselves for the D to embarrass itself AGAIN!

10-38

This is going to be a blood bath. 2 teams headed in absolute opposite directions.

After they lose this game they should shut down every player of value... Matthews, Cobb, Nelson, Rodgers, Bakhtiari, EDS, Perry, Jones, Jones, Shields, Sitton.

Save them for next season (if they can get 'em signed).

The rest? - go ahead and play 'em. Who cares if below average players get hurt?

You said Bakhtiari was to small to play in this league. Jonathan Franklin wouldn't do anything, which even if he doesn't do anything else his Bengals game proved you wrong alone...

I think we'll finish better than 6-10 as well but my point is people like Cow should not be chastised for having an opinion that is different or negative than the majority here.

Just a few weeks ago Ted Cruz stood out all alone defending against Obama Care and everyone wanted to hang him and called him an idiot. Now he's a hero because he was right and now the majority quickly side with him.

I simply am defending Cows right to free speech no matter how much you disagree with him. The second people like Cow are not allowed to voice their opinion is the day we officially become a communist country.

Steven, I am an optimist. I say Green Bay and Tolzein win this fucking game. Calling me a retard for supporting Cow's right to free speech is a little harsh but you have that right to say it. No biggie. I think you are a good guy Steven regardless.

If lacy is the only thing we got going against the Giants it may not be enough.
IMHO I still think we lack an 'effective' pass rush, one that will force Eli to make bad decisions. Keep in mind you pack fans, he trashed us the last two times and had career days.
Our pass defense, it just does not exist. Our safeties and corners are the worst in football. If I'm right, Cruz and Nikcs set new records for yardage and reception.
I'm not even sure with the patched up O line, that Tolzien makes it through the first quarter?
This game will determine what kind of team we have going forward with or without Rogers.

I agree. We need a huge pass rush tomorrow. I am already going on record and saying Mike Daniels is a guy you can count on weekly. He's a pro bowl player at this point. Matthews can also bring the consistent pressure. Where I need to see improvement is from Mike Neal and Datone Jones. If we can get a little extra juice from those two combined with Daniels and Matthews that could be enough.

I am expecting Tolzein to play like Bart Starr tomorrow. Cool, calm and totally mentally prepared where he won't lose the game by himself. Tolzein will put up some points tomorrow.

I say Capers saves his job and the Packers are all over Manning tomorrow.

Steven, I am just having a little fun taking Cows side. Of course he's an idiot. I don't agree with anything the guy says for the most part. I do agree with his right to say the things he does without getting kicked off.

We need Cows on every board. Cows represent the other point of view. It's healthy if anything to have someone in here taking the opposing view. Do you realize the two most used words here are "I agree"? That's why I like and support Cows right to be an asshole if he chooses. It's fucking boring if everyone agrees with each other.

I had a blast the night Nagler was drunk and started flipping me and everyone else off after that Bears loss. We need more of that. lol

I was wrong about Lacy.

There you go.

Other than that - I'm pretty comfortable with my preseason assessment of this team.

Soft.
Shallow.

Oh - and I don't recall ever panning for old free agents. Although dipping a toe into that pool of water every once in a while might be helpful.

You really think there were no affordable safeties on the market that were/are better than McMillian, Banjo, Jennings, or Burnett?

And it's not like no one knew that position group was week. hell - most people would have liked to see a S drafted in the first 2 rds.

Also - wouldn't a quality veteran backup QB (who had been around for all of camp) have been a nice thing to have when 12 went down vs Chicago?

You mean to tell me there was/is no affordable veteran QB that was/is better than Tolzien, Wallace, Coleman, Young, Harrell?
Come on!

Sure glad TT stock piled all those late round picks Barrington, Johnson, and that WR they got from Maryland sure look like keepers. Heaven forbid you move up in the draft to get some quality.

Boils down to this for me... when you have a player like #12 on your team - YOU GO FOR IT. TT only knows one way of doing things. It's a solid system for building a team up from scratch, but once you've entered that "window" you need to do everything possible to push through it.

From 2010 to this year each season has seen the talent on this roster gradually erode.

Just a shame.

"When you have a player like #12- YOU GO FOR IT"

Amen Cow!
He's passed up many affordable great players to help win a title.
Randy Moss ( before NE) 4th rd draft choice, 2 million/yr
Tony Gonzoles in his prime 3rd rd pick
Marshawn Lynch 4rd rd pick
It would have been fun to watch these players in Packer uniforms, not to mention a much greater chance of having another Super Bowl title or two.
Nagh, TT would rather drive the country side in his 1979 Ford LTD and find his own own Hall of Famer. Why take a proven stud when you can groom and develop a Division 3 prospect.
So glad I canceled my Direct TV Football package this season I'm not missing much. Favre won't have anything to do with the Packers until Ted is gone, I don't blame him.

When you name him we'll listen! You can't so we won't! Like I said the Packers are an 11-5 team. Your 6-10 isn't even close. If Rodgers isn't hurt you don't have a leg to stand on and you never predicted Rodgers injury. It was made believing Rodgers would play every game. Just STFU and go away again.

God I hope Tolzien leads the Packers to a W over the Gents, just so you have to crawl back under the bridge you live under! Troll.

Fitzpatrick.
Hasselback
Carr
Campbell

All would have been able to get through a game or 2 if they had been in the system all through camp.

Tolzein is better than all those qb's. You'll see today when you don't show up after the Packers win Cow. TT made the right call. When he had a chance to upgrade his backup qb, he didn't hesitate. Got rid of all his qb's and now GB has the best backup situation in all of football. A few chess moves by the master GM and we're sittin' pretty. Yeah, like David fucking Carr is the answer!! lol

Tolzien may very well be a better QB but no one knows that. --- He's making his first NFL start today.

...best back-up situation ..." ---Again, you don't know this at all. The situation is better than it was (Harrell, BJ, Young, etc.) but no back-up has won a game yet for the Pack. --- Tolzien and now Flynn need to step up big-time or GB's season is done.

UP- open your eyes!! Did you see Tolzein? He's pretty fucking good. Flynn knows our system. He's also pretty good if the elbow is ok. I'm telling you right now, this Tolzein has the makings of another Tom Brady coming out of no where. He's going to shock the world today you wait and see!!

I'll say it again. The Packers have the best backup qb situation in all of football. Went from ok to the best in two weeks thanks to Teddy Tee!!

Neither Tolzien nor Flynn have won a game this season for the Pack. Call them whatever you like, winning a game while AR is out is the only thing that counts.

"winning a game while AR is out is the only thing that counts."

I see you and I are finally in agreement. The good news UP is the winning starts today in New York. As I said yesterday, this game will be Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy's finest hour.

It will be the game we all remember years from now. One that propelled us back into the playoff hunt and on to a super bowl win for Green Bay. Tolzein will be forever looked upon in Packers history as a sort of mini hero for the one game he came thru before Rodgers came back and won out. There, you see UP, I laid out our future. It's pretty fucking bright. Don't listen to Cow.

I don't disagree that Tolzien might be better than all the re-treads I listed earlier... the problem I have is that Tolzien was no where to be found during camp. He's been in town for like 3 weeks.

If TT had brought Tolzien in over the summer, I'd give him all the props in the world. But he didn't... he went with the garbage that was in camp.

He couldn't bring him in the summer Cow as Tolzein was not available at that time. When TT saw he was available he then went after him. TT will search the world over to improve his team including the jungles of the Congo (see Mulumba). We all need to give TT props after this victory in NY.

I wish the Packers started 22 All Pros every week.
I wish I could turn mud into chocolate pudding.
I wish every draft choice panned out.
I wish we could re-sign every player that does pan out after his rookie contract expires, AND stay under the salary cap, AND sign a few veteran free agents, AND have flawless play calling on both sides of the ball, AND fire every coach that ever does a single thing I don't agree with, AND....

Am I asking for too much here?

All I want is for them to realize that they have very little time left with the best QB in football.

For 12 to end his career without another SB trip would be a shame.

It's a shame that TT doesn't get it. If GB had an individual owner team philosophy would be different. Why doesn't Murphy get more involved in personnel decisions? I don't get it.

Yeah Elway in Denver doesn't get it either. That dumb ass brought in Wes Walker why doesn't he just draft and develop and throw away the season with one of the best QB to ever play the game. If Manning stays heathy you'll be watching him the SB. Enjoy watching you're home grown smurf DB's falling down looking for the ball today. Nicks hasn't caught a TD pass this season, he gets at least 2.

Elway has not won a super bowl as a G.M., Ted Thompson has. Elway is like Ron Wolf. He's trying to do something that he has never done and that's win a super bowl. Wolf won one thru free agency as you suggest TT do. Elways is also trying to buy a super bowl. He has this year to do it and it's over for Denver.

Manning is 38. What happens next year when he retires and they don't win it this year? They have no qb behind him and they are pretty much done for.

Green Bay meanwhile has Rodgers for the next 7 or 8 years with a chance to win it every year as long as he's healthy.

You are either a draft and develop team using your money wisely or you are a big spender like Obama trying to cure all your problems by throwing money at them. I am a guy that remembers the 70's and 80's very well. I like Ted Thompson's method much better.

Don't you think Denver has a better chance to win a SB with Wes Welker? Elway has played in 5 Super Bowls, I think he knows how to get there. Denver is vastly improved since he took over. Heck, his team beat Pittsburg in the playoffs with Tebow. Still he wasn't afraid to change (upgrade) personnel to improve team the next year. His teams get tougher every year. Never hear his teams being labeled soft.

I understand that, but I don't think TT sees it that way.
This is what I THINK he thinks:

Take the bpa and develop him. Any team is one sprained ankle away from a "need" at any given position. (I've heard him say that ankle thing, so that part isn't a guess)

Keep the team winning, competitive, "in the hunt". Once the playoffs begin, who knows what will happen?

Keep the cap healthy. Have the ability to re-sign core players, and don't be afraid to let other players leave in FA and get replacements from the draft.

Naturally I could be wrong, but this is what I believe TT's approach to be.

The idea that AR could go to another SB is not an extreme wish by anyone. That's the goal of every player & team in the NFL.

Your examples to counter the argument are ridiculously extreme. You know you're asking too much because everything you listed is impossible. Why even post fantasy ideas? --- Try again.

Cow, Ted Thompson doesn't give a shit what you want. Ted Thompson's job is to field a competitive team so the Packers can MAKE A PROFIT year after year. It's a business Cow and it's all about making money not winning super bowls though they do try. Making a profit comes first above anything else. The sooner you realize this the sooner you will quit complaining.

The Packers under TT have established a way to win year after year without going in financial ruin like what happened under Mike Sherman in 2005 when they hit rock bottom after overspending on a ton of free agents that didn't pan out.

You really think TT is going to "go for it" swing and miss and then you and the rest here are compaining why they are letting so many guys go in free agency because they overpaid for some safety that YOU thought was the final missing piece?

Teddy Tee doesn't swing that way. It's draft and develop. Get used to it or find another team to root for. The Packers can't afford to make too many mistakes with their money and TT has been pretty darn good making more good decisions than bad ones.

So every free agent costs too much?

Why is it that whenever signing a free agent or 2 comes up everyone automatically jumps to the "if you overspend for a such-in-such you won't be able to afford to re-sign what's-his-futs?

There are such things as appropriately priced free agents.

"There are such things as appropriately priced free agents."

Yes there are and glad you pointed that out. Have you forgot Ted signed Matthew Mulligan this past year? So it's not as though TT doesn't do free agency. He most certainly does but within reason and if it doesn't work out it doesn't hurt the Packers three years down the road.

You can also overpay for your own free-agents. A.J. hawk, Williams, Burrnett, would have over payed for Jennings (10Million/ yr) if he signed. Will probably overpay for Shields and B.J. Raji. Here 's an idea bring in better talent than you currently have. BRILLANT,
