Campen definitely part of the ‘Ugly’. Or ‘Brutal’. Or ‘Useless’.

  2. Kayla Dawson says:

Wow what a game. I thought the Lions would score for sure, but damn we did a good job today.

  3. PackersThad says:

You’ve got to add Crosby to the good too, right?

And I think Campen belongs in the Ugly! OMG! What are we going to do with him?

Clay Matthews sure looks good though, he can only keep improving…That one handed catch by DD got me screaming throughout the house! That was amazing, and it was at least his second one THIS YEAR!!
…and just so you know, I approved of all of Nick Barnett’s samurai dances today! Well deserved!!

  4. fellas, we’ve reached difficult terrain: a land where we as fans expect more of our team than their coach does.

yes, a shutout is a difficult thing to do in the nfl. but the freakin’ lions without their qb, and without their only star player. we are not expecting too much when we say it should have been 49-0. we haven’t had a 100-yd rusher in 5 games, and we’re on all-time world record pace at sacks allowed.

doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results = the definition of stupidity. maybe i’ll feel better tomorrow. probably not.

  5. Jack says:

Mike McCarthy needs to see the movie “Groundhog Day” to understand what it is like for Packer fans to hear his post-game press conferences. I am so sick and tired of hearing the same lame comments from him over and over again regarding penalties.
Can he really be that clueless?

  6. PackerBacker says:

I’m disappointed in the fact that there is no accountability for the mistakes the players are making on the field. It doesn’t matter if a player continually makes mistakes throughout a game. He doesn’t see any less playing time, unless of course he’s a backup. But if you’re a starter on MM’s team you can do whatever the hell you want to and not worry about it affecting your playing time. How many times do we have to see a fucking holding penalty on ST before we start moving people around. I don’t care if Will Blackmon is the most athletic fucking person in the world, if the dumb bastard can’t stop blocking people in the back, he’s of no use.

Clifton has obviously lost his edge. Due to injuries and age, he can’t compete with the quick ends we’ve had to face this year. That’s why you are seeing him jump off sides and get penalties for being off the line. He’s trying to cheat as much as possible to compensate for his slower first kick. I think that they need to leave Lang in there, even after Clifton comes back. The kid needs the work and it looks like he might be competent (a quality that is seriously lacking among many of the other linemen). That is, until Campen gets his hands on him and messes him up (“No kid, you need to stand straight up when you block. There you go, now lean forward too far. Perfect.”)

  7. IronMan says:

    The good:
-Donald Driver. Big congrats to one of the greatest ever. And his second amazing one handed catch of the year.
    _
-Aaron Rodgers. Another solid performance despite the shitty offensive line.
    _
    The ugly:
Chad Clifton. Four pre snap penalties? Really? Seriously?
    _
McCarthy. This team has no discipline. None. The penalties are getting more and more ridiculous, and MM has no clue how to “fix it”
    _
    Offensive line:
Another terrible performance. 5 more sacks. How James Campen is still employed boggles my mind

  8. bucky says:

Yhe Packers aren’t going to fire Campen during the season, but right now I think he’s in the same position as Mike Stock was last year. He’s done at the end of the year; the only question is whether he goes alone, or the rest of the staff go with him. Right now I think it could go either way.
The continued mental mistakes (primarly penalties) come back directly to the coaching staff. I’m not one of those guys whose solution to every problem is merely to get tougher (I used to work for one of those guys, and at a certain point the marginal returns become negative), but whatever they are doing now is not working. Focus does not seem to be there.
On the plus side: Clay Matthews started at OLB, and according to JSOnline took all the snaps there, with Brady Poppinga relegated to second string. That is movement in the right direction. On the bad side- the same source says that Desmond Bishop may become trade bait prior to the deadline because, “with Nick Barnett, Brandon Chillar and A.J. Hawk ahead of him on the depth chart, Bishop hasn’t found much playing time.” I sure hope this is just idle speculation, but I gotta say, I haven’t seen a whole lot the last season and a half to inspire confidence in the decision-making ability of this crew.
Finally, re: accountability. It’s become an issue now. But people have short memories if they think this is the first time it’s come this decade. While there were things to like about the Sherman era, one of the most aggravating was watching the same players (I’m looking at you, Ahmad Carroll and Brett Favre) make the same mistakes over and over again, and no changes in either approach or personnel was ever made. It was just “Brett being Brett”, or Ahmad being incompetent, and we were expected to simply deal with it.
I’m still generally on board with McCarthy’s approach, but I’m starting to lose faith.
Okay, enough rambling for one morning.

  9. Bad Knees says:

McPenalty does not have the respect and attention of his players. Cannot win against good teams playing the McPenalty-way. These bad habits are ingrained. I liked Lang’s dance with the defensive end. Very “Joe Thomas” like. Just takes his man out of the play and makes it look like an easy waltz. Clifton’s injury may be a blessing in disguise. Hope they don’t “coach Lang up” into another stumble bum.

  10. Scott W says:

Listening to McCarthy’s lame post game pressers and his offering the same drivel week after week…”we gotta clean that up,” I’m frustrated too,” blah, blah, blah, woof, woof, woof, reminds me of Lindy “We were only three plays away,” Infante in the late 80′s and early 90′s. Weak coaches offer weak explanations. There, I said it.

  11. JerseyAl says:

I really felt going into the Vikings game that we would see the unleashing of Clay Matthews and Kampman given opportunities to rush as a defensive end. I was disappointed. Glad to see it happen now, but for me, it’s a game too late. Why did we hold back against the Vikings?

  12. Aaron Nagler says:

Because Capers didn’t trust Derrick Martin or Jarrett Bush to hold up on the back end. Hard to argue after watching them play.

  13. aussiepacker says:

just finished watching the game and although it was a good win i still feel like it should have been by way more? The oline was a disapointment again but i was happy for tj lang! do you guys really think that a differant oline coach would make a difference and if so how?

  14. aussiepacker says:

So far who seems to be the better 2009 first round pick?

  15. [...] CTV.com Good, Bad, & Ugly: Good–Driver, Matthews, & Rodgers; Bad–Barbre, McCarthy, & CAmpen; Ugly–Clifton. [...]

  16. Jayme says:

aussie – would have to say that CM3 is looking like a great 2nd and (2)3rd round pick. It’s hard to argue when he produces.
    -
I don’t think I’d view Raji as a “good” pick even if he was getting lighting it up. He’s kinda like Hawk in that aspect. He was the pick that they needed to make. He was the pick that everyone knew they would make. There was no other pick, so there’s no “good” or “bad” about it.
    -
More to your point, though, the better player, so far, is CM3, but I would advise against counting Raji out. He’s a backup right now, and with the way our D-line has produced up until this point, I don’t really have a problem with that. He’s still got plenty of time to grow and if the few glimpses we’ve had are any indication, he has a chance to be very good.

  17. aussiepacker says:

So jayme do you think a new oline coach would make a difference?

  18. Packsmack says:

I think this week, Driver should have had his own category, “The Great.” That’s what he is, a Packer Great.

  19. PackersRS says:

aussiepacker, I do. There are A LOT of mental and technical mistakes on our offense. Most of the time it’s not the physical aspect. And mental and technical mistakes can be corrected by good coaching. Of course, the results wouldn’t be immediate. But if the change happened right now, for a great OL coach, come the last 4 games, we would have a much better OL.

  20. nerdmann says:

I heard Jamon Meredith played well at LT in his debut with Buffalo. Shoulda kept him over Giacomini. Woulda coulda shoulda.

  21. Brandonrds says:

FIRE CAMPEN! Whats taking so long. We have to replace him if we want aaron Rodgers healthy.

  22. Matt Flynn says:

Clifton isn’t quite as ugly as Orlando Pace!
