Pre-Order The Pro Football Draft Preview Today!!

Packers 2016 NFL Draft: Rounds 4-7 predictions

Well, day two of the 2016 draft ended and the Packers still haven’t picked an inside linebacker. However, neither has anyone else, so there are still a lot of options for the final day of the draft. Joshua Perry is ranked as the top remaining player on many boards, so he probably won’t be available when the Packers are on the clock with their compensatory selections at the end of the fourth round.

Andrew Billings is still available. A lot of people thought he would go in the first round, possibly to the Packers. I don’t know why he hasn’t been picked yet, but most likely he will be gone before the Packers have another chance at him.

Prior to signing Jared Cook, tight end was also high on the wish list of Packer fans. Cook only signed a one-year deal, so this is another position Ted Thompson should be looking to add a player. Outside of linebacker and tight end, the roster is strong and Ted will probably continue picking the best player regardless of position. Green Bay traded two of their picks (4th & 7th round) for Jason Spriggs, so they are left with two compensatory picks at the end of the fourth round and their fifth and sixth round selections. The players below are some of the possibilities for the Packers remaining four picks.

Linebackers

Nick Kwiatkoski from West Virginia would be my first choice of the inside linebackers still available. He started out as a safety so he is good in pass coverage and has a nose for the ball. This year he had 3 interceptions and 7 pass breakups. However, he is still aggressive and a good tackler in the run game. At 6’2 and 243 pounds, he would be a bigger option in the nickel defense.

Blake Martinez is a solid linebacker from Stanford. I don’t think he stands out in any one area, but he just gets the job done. He is disciplined and good around the line of scrimmage, but not great in coverage.

Scooby Wright was a productive college linebacker that relied on instincts. He has average athletic ability and is slow. His 2014 stats were unbelievable and he never really returned to form while dealing with injuries this year. I don’t think he is the best fit in Green Bay, but his playmaking ability might be tempting.

Kentrell Brothers and Blake Martinez are a couple other guys that aren’t great in coverage, but they have been extremely productive, so I wouldn’t mind either of them.

Tight Ends

Jerell Adams from South Carolina is a big athletic tight end. He was limited in college by the talent around him, so his production wasn’t as high as some others. However, I think he has the greatest potential of the remaining prospects.

Ben Braunecker is another athletic tight end that dominated the Ivy League at Harvard last season. He has been rumored to be on the Packers radar. Some of the negativity around him is the lower competition he faced and his need to bulk up to block in the NFL. It is hard to argue with his production though and he stood out in combine drills. I like his potential.

Thomas Duarte is another tight end that has been mentioned with regards to the Packers. He played wide receiver at UCLA, but is seen as a tight end at the next level. He is 6’2 and around 230 pounds. He was extremely productive across the middle and was an important part of the passing offense. Duarte would not bring much as a blocker, but he would provide the receiving threat.

Others

I think after picking up Spriggs, they don’t need to draft another lineman, but they will probably be looking to add quality depth at any position. They could use another OLB or DE.

Green Bay could also look to add a running back. Nobody knows what is going to happen with Lacy after this year, so they could look to add a running back. Kenneth Dixon, Paul Perkins, and Tyler Ervin are some of the intriguing options.

I say another developmental DL, Schobert (OLB) Kenneth Dixon if available, and that German guy in 6th round! Or ILB instead of DL!

I have no idea if that German WR can play but he stands 6'5", which is something most guys cannot do. He's a nice big target anyways.

Any one hear any rumblings about if Rico Gathers is expected to be a draft pick or will he go undrafted? Could be a great pickup after the draft.

It does surprise me that Billings is still available, so far we drafted for need, Ted did trade up so he will go after a few in UFDA.

Interesting note from Ryan McCrystal of Bleacher Report:

According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, there are only four active defensive linemen at 6'1" or shorter and at least 310 pounds—and only one of those four, Baltimore Ravens nose tackle Brandon Williams, was a top-100 selection.

I'm interested in why Billings hasn't gotten more news coverage. He's probably the consensus top pick remaining and there's a large gap between him and the next guy in terms of value. Maybe there's a hidden medical issue or something.

Interesting....Read your link yesterday on Kenny. Who wrote that? His mother? Best part I like is the "motor" depiction. A trait that is not akin to many Dlineman, but one that Daniels is known for. Thank you for sharing!

It seems like there is always one guy that slides to day 3 to the surprise of the entire draftnik world. This year's version is Billings.

Hard to figure where the Packers go from here out with their four remaining picks. There are a LOT of good, high-upside players left on the board, and many at positions of "need" for the Packers. I would not be surprised if the Packers draft any position, but it seems likely that they'll pick a TE and LB before the day is out.

I still want an inside linebacker who can cover. I would have liked Kwiatkoski in the third. Pass rush depth is great but. You are not subbing Matthews out for that guy, or Peppers either. Right now Matthews is the only reliable LB in coverage.

Frackell can actually cover really well Mark. The main reason he didn't have more sacks was he was asked to drop in coverage so much. Check this out.... At about the 28 second mark of the video Fackell makes a play that's pretty darn impressive!

Last year, Capers did a pretty good job of mixing his personnel to maximize production. He really didn't leave many tools on the shelf. Giving him another one or two guys that can contribute a few snaps/game would be nice. That's a lower bar to clear with front 7 than DB but you can never have too many good DBs.

On offense, I think there is an opportunity for a rook to play some at TE and RB. Given the importance of protecting Rodgers and some impending contract expirations, another OL would not be bad. And while WRs seems stacked right now, it was a big issue last year. I wouldn't mind a guy that can at least mount a cursory challenge to Davante Adams, in particular.

As always, ST ability is a big deal on day 3.

Today is really the day that separates how teams work the draft. TT and his guys do a better job than most so I'm looking forward to see what the day brings.

Good to see you back Hank, haven't heard from you in a while. You're spot on though, this is where Thompson usually does his best work. Wouldn't it be something if the Packers came away with a TE like Adams or Higbee in the 4th (Trusting WKU comments on the Higbee ordeal) and maybe a guy like Dixon or Ervin.

Great to see both you guys around! Thanks for the shout out. For the record, I have no inside sources (wish I did), the information I posted comes from local Bowling Green news sources and general knowledge of how things work in BG (I grew up 18 miles from there). However, my daughter (also a WKU grad!) may be able to find out more from her sorority sisters down there.

In the meantime, if GB grabs Brandon Doughty as an UDFA I'll be super excited. He seems like he'd be a fan favorite, very entertaining while being quite religious. And he can sling the ball

I'm convinced that the Packers simply do not value the ILB position that much. There's still a lot of value out there for ILB, but perhaps they feel confident with Barrington returning and may know something about Carl Bradford that we don't.

For me, I'd want an ILB and a Guard taken in the 4th round. Maybe a TE, depending on whos available. I know Matt Rotherham (Guard) is waiting in the wings, but there's still some really good linemen left. Perhaps they can sign TE Tyler Higbee as an undrafted FA since he got that DUI before the draft.

Ol Ted doesn't have a lot of options. He gave away two picks so he only has one in the 4th, 5th and 6th left. To make matters worse, 5 of his OL can bolt next year decimating the Offensive line. Even if he keeps two plus the new guy he losses a lot so I would not be shocked to see him go OL again in this draft to get some training in for next year? He doesn't need a receiver or running back so if he got a good OL and and inside linebacker he would have filled some holes now and future holes for next year.

Because our #3 OLB was far better than our #2 ILB.

Putting clay at ILB made room for a better football player to get on the field.

Jatavius is still out there RC! And big Scoob. I'd love either or. But Kwiatkowski is a playmaker. I've seen him live like 3 or 4 times and he is always around the ball. We get my mountaineer and I'm sending Ted a box of chocolates.

Although, not the picks I thought Ted would make, he is very sensible in this draft...."best player for a position of need." I see ILB being addressed or they would not have released Palmer. Just like the OLB with Mulamba and Neal. Thus, my prediction is ILB, S, CB, RB or DE.

Lots of OL talent out there. I think we've commented on various players who would look good in GB. Pretty much all of those 4th round targets are around except for Vigil. My draft crush, Justin Simmons, was taken with the last 3rd round picks. No more crushes out there for me.

Next Round if he lasts, Braunecker
Safety or RB though are the signals TT is demonstrating. Ted is being very predictable with respect to drafting BPA per position of need.

What is interesting to me is that he did not go WR given all the complaints last year and injuries. That tells me that they do not believe it was only WR issues.

Two picks remain for the Packers in 5th and 6th. What will they be - tight end, cornerback to replace Casey Hayward, or safety to replace Sean Richardson.

I would add RB as well. Value they go for TE or RB here. Biggest need they go S or CB. This is where Ted goes small school often.

I don't know if he'll be drafted, but Kent London reminds me so much of Sean Richardson. I can't talk about him as a player since I can't find any clear tape on him, but his body and combine/pro day numbers are eye-popping.

Though not a safety, Jatavius Brown is also still available for that hybrid type of guy

Or Jerell Adams might have more value. I think that Martinez selection closed the door on any other potential ILB drafts. Might have closed the door or any other LB drafts as well. No Victor Ochi.

UNLESSSSSS, TT/Dom doesn't like our LBs going into 2017

Not a fan of this pick. Quick...maybe a slot guy, but not terribly fast. A returner.

See ya, Abby.

Can't underestimate the value of a good returner (kick off or punt return), but I thought we already have those? Unless MM really doesn't want them risking injury doing that???

Agree....Well we will see if there is something we are not aware of, but could this pick not have waited until FA or at least the 6th? Seems a reach.

Yeah, I don't get this 5th rounder. Either he bumps Abby, who doesn't contribute much on ST, or he doesn't make the team.

I don't much see why you draft a guy who's calling card (KO returns) is something the league is trying to do away with...

Davante Adams had a very disappointing year. And despite his heroics against AZ, Janis was only able to see the field due to injury in front of him on the depth chart. Depending on what happens this fall, I could see one of those two feeling the heat from Davis for a roster spot, as well.

:-)....My favorite moment is still Dick Butkus, a guy who made his living thumping guards, announcing.....and the Bears with their 2nd round pick take (GULP!!! hold back the choking cough.....) .....Whitehair, GUARD!... and then an unethusiastic, "Yeahhhhhhhhh", fist pump!

Yet, got to admit the Bears have drafted solid

Packers have a real roster spot to fill in defensive backfield. Cavuto? Kearse? Lofton? Davis? Canady? White? Mills?

Still have an opening in ILB and RB in my opinion as well.

Lots of value in DB, RB and TE still.

I love the Cowboys picks (can't believe I'm typing this). The Titans are building a pretty good defense.

I don't think the Bears are hitting it out of the park, but I do believe they're having the 2nd best Draft out of the NFC North (so far).

Bears
Vikings
Lions

1A Packers
1B Vikings

If you love Darron Lee then you have to love the Deion Jones' and the Jatavis Brown's. The ONLY difference was the conference they played in.

Ahh.

Man, I think TT/Dom wants players like that but I don't think they want LBs under a certain height. It's probably why they cut DJ Smith prematurely and let Brad Jones stay so long.

I agree Hank. It is obvious the Pack will carry additional O-linemen on the Roster and try to stash a couple on the Practice Squad. I feel they left a hole though in the defensive backfield and the depth at ILB, though addressed to some extent, could still be better.

Hope Sam can come back stronger. He is a thumper and obviously a good man. I am wondering if the Pack might try to transition someone to the inside again. Actually hope that experiment is over, but even with Martinez now on-board, it is likely that Bradford and Thomas remain pending a FA winning a spot or a cross-over from OLB.

IMO, getting Kyle Murphy at pick #200 was a steal. Adding Spriggs and Murphy to the OL has given the Packers depth at that position they haven't had.

In fact, I believe it could be argued that the OL is the only position that has actually been strengthened by this draft. All the other draft picks can at best be described as replacements for talent that has left like Raji or will be leaving like Neal.
