Packers 2016 NFL Draft: Round 2 & 3 Projection
By hobbes
While the 1st round is filled with glamor and drama, in reality players selected in the second day of the NFL draft offer the most bang for your buck. This year there was plenty of surprises, teams went up and down the draft as it seemed like every pick was up for sale at some point. More wide receivers were picked than projected while there are still some quality defensive tackles left on the board. Of the players still waiting for their name to be called, which ones might have theirs called by the Packers?
Myles Jack: The obvious story of the draft (outside the bizzare fall of Laremy Tunsil) is just how far Jack will fall due to his knee issues. Will Jack be there at 57? At the rate he's falling it's entirely possible, but I presume some team will take the risk with Jack in the early or middle of the 2nd round. Even then, the Packers are famous for being incredibly cautious when it comes to medical issues and the possibility of microfracture surgery, a decreased career and the fact that he might never regain his old form have to weigh into their minds.
Jaylon Smith: The other injured LB prospect, Smith was widely reported to have suffered some serious nerve damage after blowing out his knee in his final college game. While getting picked in the 1st round was likely a pipe dream for Smith, tne 2nd and 3rd rounds are probably the ceiling for Smith. As I've written on previously, round 1-3 statisically and economically should net teams stars and starters, the 4th round is the turning point while rounds 5-7 are for depth players and high risk, high reward players; Ron Wolf also has been quoted saying that teams should get 3 starters out of every draft. In terms of logical value, it probably doesn't make much sense to draft Smith until the 4th round, but given the Packers have a stable front office and a very well stocked roster, I would be ok with the Packers taking him at the bottom of the 3rd. Keep in mind the team drafting Smith already knows Smith will have a redshirt season and even then may never regain his old form.
Reggie Ragland: Finally we can talk about an LB prospect that isn't hurt. Ragland is the consensus top 3-4 ILB prospect and fits the traditional mold of a thumper who is probably better in pass coverage than most give him and is a solid pass rusher to boot. However the NFL is obsessed with smaller linebacker who can fly from sideline to sideline and carry a slot receiver down the seam, as evidenced when the Jets picked Darron Lee with the 20th pick. No matter how teams are moving towards when it comes to linebackers, Ragland is unlikely to last to 57 and it might take the Packers trading up to land him, which is highly unlikely given how low Thompson values ILB (people seem to forget that AJ Hawk was drafted when the Packers played a 4-3 defense and was an 4-3 OUTSIDE LINEBACKER)
Deion Jones: If the Packers aren't sold on Ragland (it was rumored the Packers front office was split on Ragland), the Packers could go more modern and select Jones, who definitely fits the mold of the modern inside linebacker. While some people may have some concerns about having only one year of starting experience, Jones was fantastic in that one year logging 100 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and a forced fumble. Add to that leadership qualities and high football IQ and you have a player like Darron Lee who can cover in the NFLs spread/passing offense.
Shilique Calhoun: Jersey Al hit a home run with his Kenny Clark prediction so who am I to argue when Al has the Packers picking Calhoun in the 2nd. Calhoun is a pure speed rusher with a wide variety of pass rushing moves and great balance and flexibility to turn the corner. He lacks a power element to his game and will often times get stonewalled by offensive linemen but should improve in an NFL weight room. Furthermore, Calhoun is well liked by coaches and teammates alike and has a clean record, which is something that can't be said about Noah Spence, who is also still on the board.
Jarran Reed or A'Shawn Robison or Andrew Billings: It was a little surprising that Alabama only managed to get one player drafted in the 1st round and it was a center. Both Crimson defensive tackles are still on the board and it would surprise me for Thompson to double dip like he did last year at defensive back. While picking Reed, a pure run stuffer with little pass rush production, in the 1st round was probably not the best use of draft resources, picking up another big body who play the nose and really stuff the run is a total steal at the bottom of the 2nd. Robinson and Billings offer a little more pass rush potential but aren't as good run stuffers but both would be great additions in the 2nd rounds and would really add some beef to the defensive line.
Cody Whitehair: It probably doesn't need to be pointed out that 80% of the starting offense line will be free agents after 2016 and it's an almost certainty that someone will be on another team this time next year. Most likely is either Josh Sitton or TJ Lang, both who will be going onto their 3rd contracts and will be past 30. Whitehair was the consensus best guard in the draft and it wouldn't be that surprising to see the Packers pick up someone who can be their swing tackle this year (which they sorely need) and a starter in the future at either guard spots.
Jason Spriggs: Probably the best tackle left in the draft, Spriggs might be one of the most athletic, which translates well to the NFL's transition to a spread passing league. Spriggs would be an instant upgrade at swing tackle and would likely be groomed to be the Packers left tackle of the future as David Bahktiari has only been an average/below average starter. Spriggs will probably do best in a zone blocking scheme that utilizes his agility rather than a man or power running team that wants hats on hats and pushing piles
Henry Hunter: Tight end was a popular pick for the Packers, even if it meant reaching in the 1st for the best tight end in the draft. In reality, no tight end really pops out as a true playmaker this year and Hunter, the consesus top tight end is still waiting for his name to be called. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the Packers pick Henry at the bottom of the 2nd, but Henry might even last to the top of the 3rd, which would require the Packers trade up to select him, likely with their 4th round pick as they have two compensatory picks at the bottom of the 4th waiting for them anyways.

Is Correa in the 2nd and Jones in the 3rd at all possible?

I think Jones' speed might have pushed him into the 2nd. At least serious though.

Based on mock drafts, that might be the case...but with LB falling out of r1, it might push him back into r3.

OK....back to sarcasm....Since these guys are so valuable to our roster, how about seeing if we could trade for a 2nd or 3rd round pick, Pennel, Bradford, &/or Goodson? Please, Please, PLease Ted....no trading down tonight!

What about Tretter?
ray nichkee
April 29, 2016 at 12:31 pm
Tretter can probably get starter money next year and if is wearing a packers jersey he will be starting barring injury and his current spot will need to be replaced.
Evan
April 29, 2016 at 12:35 pm
Yea, but that's 2017. We're talking about a swing tackle this season.

April 29, 2016 at 12:41 pm
I think tretter is an interior linemen, probably guard. I didn't think he faired that well on the outside either
DrealynWilliams
April 29, 2016 at 12:51 pm
Ok, so it wasn't just me that thought that.
I like Tretter too, but he was just the better option at LT for us during the time he played. I doubt the coaches see him as a future LT.
Evan
April 29, 2016 at 12:53 pm
Yea, I don't think he's the future LT. I think of him as the #6 OL and top back-up at every position.
I do think they could add a true backup OT, but I was just questioning how "sorely" it was needed.
DrealynWilliams
April 29, 2016 at 12:57 pm
Can't really tell. It's up to the coaches and how they really feel about Bahk and Bulaga. I wouldn't be upset at all if the 2nd or 3rd pick was an OT. Even if he sat for a year.
Always remember priority #1...

It's amazing when you think about how many good players will be available today. I want to see two front 7 defensive guys that fit the mold in capers version of the 3-4 drafted. Day three will have quality too for the future on OL. I would be happy to see defense the rest of the way minus a few OL.

I'm anxious to see which Offensive player TT is going to pull out of the hat first. Is it going to be a WR, TE, OL or RB?
mrtundra
April 29, 2016 at 04:14 pm
I'm guessing, and I repeat, guessing, TT will go OL and grab Spriggs or Haeg. I think Ragland and Jack will both be gone when TT gets to pick and TT needs to address the OL while the big guys are available.

Ya that vaunted clever defense that every team knows better than our own players. My take, Dom has to make due with crappy second rate defensive players so he is creative to say the least.
I mean it took three years before realizing Mathews could do some real damage in the middle. It also should have taking pack fans to realize the Ted does not usually draft DE's very high, they costs too much. Thus the screwy pass rushing scheme of Capers is the result of not have two top bookend DE's who can rush.
hobbes
April 29, 2016 at 04:59 pm
You are aware that the Packers play a 3-4 and DEs aren't the main pass rushers right?
Thegreatreynoldo
April 29, 2016 at 01:13 pm
When I prepared my list of best of the rest for pick #57, I was amazed by all the DL worthy of a 2nd rd pick (at least 6), all the OL worthy at #57 (8 roughly, some though perhaps 2nd/3rd round types) and 8 OLBs - though a couple I prefer at ILB. I do think a guy I like will be there at #57.

It will be interesting to see if Ted holds on to the 3rd round pick or trades it. I could honestly see him trading both up and down, though I hope not down. Congrats also to Al on nailing the 1st round pick!
DrealynWilliams
April 29, 2016 at 04:20 pm
What do you think he'll have to give up to trade up in the 2nd?
RobinsonDavis
April 29, 2016 at 04:40 pm
I just answered this with some sarcasm earlier, but point value wise they would have to give up a 3rd this year and a 2nd next year....may have to entice it more with a 5th rounder or a player. Depends on your feelings about Jack, but I want to be greedy!
hobbes
April 29, 2016 at 05:02 pm
The 4th round pick makes the most sense since the Packers have two comp 4s. According to the jimmy Johnson trade chart, that would bump the packers up 7-8 spots

Drealyn....what is your opinion of some of the other ILBs? Josh Perry (some have him projected here), Goodson, Vigil. Will they last to round 3?
DrealynWilliams
April 29, 2016 at 05:41 pm
I have no idea of where players will or should go.
I don't remember much about Josh Perry. I don't know if I was unimpressed or if I didn't watch enough film on him. Nothing stood out to me.
I really like Deion Jones. The speed. The toughness. The Awareness. The sure tackling. I see in Deion Jones what people think they see in Darron Lee. I don't think Jones needs to be "protected" in order to be productive and he can take on blockers.
Jatavis Brown and Antonio Morrison are the only other potential ILBs (besides the "big names") I've seen any film on. I like Jatavis Brown too. My guess is he should be there in the 3rd/maybe 4th due to his size and lack of competition. After Morrison's knee injury he should be there in the late-late rounds.

And I would seriously like to empathize this. Floyd was one of my least favorite players in this draft. He is way too lanky and thin to hold up at that position. Why on earth the bears traded up for him when he would have probably been sitting there anyways is beyond me. The Treadwell pick scares me a bit but the Floyd one does not.
DrealynWilliams
April 29, 2016 at 03:40 pm
Floyd has the tools. He just doesn't have the body and Football IQ just yet. He won't blossom until 2 or 3 years down the line.

April 29, 2016 at 04:05 pm
Most draftniks had Floyd pretty closely tied to the Giants. They must have felt that they needed to jump over them to get him.

April 29, 2016 at 03:46 pm
I have Ted taking none of the above. Good analysis though, thanks.
My reason. Yes a lot of these people are decent picks. Ergo at 57 they will be history by then. Better start thinking what third round prospects will Ted pick in the very late second.
My take is the first 15 people are true first rounders with real pro bowl potential Just because you pick a late first rounder doesn;t really mean the person is a first round talent. Ditto, on the late second round, by then your getting iffy scrub guys who were second string on div I and first string on div 1a but lack size, speed, or strenghth, hence not div I quality.
I expect nothing from Ted this year. Your just picking way too late in the game to get talent.
hobbes
April 29, 2016 at 05:04 pm
That's not really an unusual concept: picking in the bottom 5 of each round is basically picking in the top of the next round. I will say I would be very surprised if all the guys I listed were taken. Teams have different agendas and there are plenty of 2nd round talents that I didn't list.

April 29, 2016 at 05:29 pm
Huh? For every first 15 fail - and there are plenty - there's a middle-round pro bowler a la Daniels, Sitton, Lang, not to mention late first-rounders (Rodgers, Matthews) and second-rounders (Nelson comes to mind). Thar's gold in them there middle rounds, son. Gold.

April 29, 2016 at 07:31 pm
We'll come back to this during the season when someone (most likely Bulaga) is banged up or someone is just playing bad.
Evan
April 29, 2016 at 07:37 pm
Ha. I'm mostly busting your balls. I definitely don't love it and would preferred a LB, but I trust Ted and they do need a true backup OT.
Evan
April 29, 2016 at 07:39 pm
Also, knowing how loyal MM is to his vets, it'll take an injury for Spriggs to see the field.
EdsLaces
April 29, 2016 at 07:31 pm
What a fucking joke pick. So many of these great d players will be gone next pick.
HankScorpio
April 29, 2016 at 07:36 pm
And there were times #12 was running for his life because of sucky OT play. in each of the last 2 seasons.

2 seasons ago the oline played great. Last year everyone struggled.
HankScorpio
April 29, 2016 at 07:53 pm
For the most part they did. But against Buffalo late in '13, Tretter had to play outside and it got ugly.
RobinsonDavis
April 29, 2016 at 07:34 pm
Yep, you did Dre...Kind felt that was falling. Bears traded out, so my belief is that they were going for Spriggs!

April 29, 2016 at 07:41 pm
You don't pick any player in the 2nd round to be a backup. Spriggs likely puts bahktiari on notice. I've always been of the opinion that bahktiari has been average at best, spriggs probably doesn't have the power to play guard so he's probably the LT in 2017
Evan
April 29, 2016 at 07:44 pm
But in 2016 he's certainly a backup barring injury.
HankScorpio
April 29, 2016 at 08:00 pm
Bahktiari is nothing special. Don't get me wrong, I like that he was able to hold up after being thrown into the fire and I'm not saying I think Spriggs will beat him out. But I would not term it a certainty that Bakhtiari stays ahead of Spiggs for 16 games next season.
Evan
April 29, 2016 at 08:03 pm
With MM's loyalty, id be shocked.

I'm not sold on taking an OT this high for the Packers, but if they are not planning on resigning Bakhtiari, this will be good for the future.
It will help solidify the OL and backups this year as well.

April 29, 2016 at 07:46 pm
MM is not going to give a rookie OT half a chance of unseating Bahk or Bulaga. He'll only see the field if there's an injury, which is important but not 2nd round important imo
RCPackerFan
April 29, 2016 at 07:44 pm
I'm just still not sold on drafting a player in the 2nd round designated to be a backup.
RCPackerFan
April 29, 2016 at 07:50 pm
The more I think about this, The more I think this will be Bakhtiari's last year. Thompson does this a lot in the 2nd round. Drafts a player a year early to replace a player a year later. He drafted Cobb to replace Jennings. He drafted Rollins to replace Hayward.
zoellner25
April 29, 2016 at 07:37 pm
If TT had a first round grade or do on Spriggs, and they get him at 48, I can't argue. We need another OT. Urban meyer really complimented him

Next pick:
WR, RB, or a LB (inside or rusher).
Who do y'all have falling to us in the 3rd?

I'm guessing TE, RB, LB

I can't see TT going TE just yet. Especially with this class.

I love this pick! I said we need to take OT before the 4th round. LOVE IT. We need big men. Game is won in the trenches. Need to get to the QB and protect our own QB.
Spriggs is one of the best OTs out there. He put on a show at the combine. And we all know, if any of our OTs gets injured, we're in deep trouble. And Bulaga just can't stay healthy. And the few games Bakh missed, we all know how we had to scramble.
LOVE IT !!! Thank you Ted.
