Bedard was a great guest as usual. And (as usual) he was a real debbie downer. Which is why we love him.

Not sure I understand how he thinks the fire zone scheme is outdated when LeBeau runs the same scheme to perennial success with the Steelers. It all has to do with personnel. I think it's silly for him to say it's outdated. Hell, it worked against the ManGod Peyton Manning on Thursday night on the Burnett pick.

I understand his comments were more of a criticism of Capers' playcalling and formations he called last year rather than the fire zone concept, but still not sure I agree. Capers has already shown a new nickel and dime defense (what, we have a dime defense too???) in the preseason in practices and preseasons . Who knows what they've been doing in the practices reporters don't see. We've heard about Barnett lining up outside of the outside linebacker, Cullen Jenkins at OLB, etc. You hear all the time about how much offensive/defensive coordinators are handicapped in their playcalling when backups have to play major roles as they did in our defense last year. I don't doubt Capers' creativity and complex and varied playbook, but I will agree with Bedard in a sense in that I do doubt his ability to have the courage to go to one of those plays when he doesn't feel confident in his players (perhaps the talent simply isn't there?). It's clear he goes into a conservative shell when he feels there's a weakness, that much is true. But I think he had a valid excuse to do so in an installation year with major starters injured last year. Obviously excuses can be made every year to justify anything so here's hoping it doesn't become a trend. I'm confident McCarthy lit enough of a fire under his ass according to reports after the Ari game (which, by the way, gave major points to McCarthy in my book to have the confidence to do that to a guy of Capers' stature) to change things up. As I said, he's already shown more man coverage in the preseason games, and much more movement and personnel deception than he had most of last year. Things that Mr Bedard should have noted.

Of course that don't mean squat unless he actually does it in a game, so after all of that rambling, I begrudgingly admit Mr Bedard has a point. Damn him.

Anyway, great show as usual. Expect another 6 pack of beer from me before the real season shows begin ;).

Hey Nick, do you have a link to an article regarding the post-Arizona game McCarthy rant? I hadn't heard that, curious to see the details...

Great show, and thankful you put it out on podcast. It takes a lot of time off of my commute. :)
