Now Eddie Lacy Needs Surgery. Thanks Ted and Mike!

It might have been one of the worst decisons of the Packers' Thompson-McCarthy regime.

Lets go into a game with only one running back, and one with an injured ankle at that. Last time I checked, running backs need healthy ankles to, you know, run.

So lets run him out there, see that he's hurting during the game and continue to run him out there to hurt himself more.

I was seething at this during the game and now my worst fears have come true. The Packers have lost Lacy for at least 8 weeks as he now needs surgery on his ankle.

I marvel at the arrogance and stupidity of this.  How they could have gone into that game with just one running back, and no healthy ones is beyond me. Did Mike really think handing off to Cobb or Montgomery would be a good enough fallback plan?

Ted and Mike just shot themselves in the foot (or ankle, if you will) big time. As if things weren't going bad enough.

Hey Mark Murphy, are you going to have anything to say about this, or will you just keep fiddling while Rome burns?

Yeah, I'm pissed.

TT ought to get down on his knees and thank God (the stars, whatever) he is tucked away in a a corner of NE Wisconsin.

Forcing a gimpy Lacy to play last Sunday because there was no backup RB (going with 2 doncha know) on the roster while WRs 5-7 do virtually nothing week after week would get a GM significant flack in a bigger, less forgiving market.

However, in GB the message is always in TT we must trust.

Ridiculous KenEllis.
TT has no say in putting Lacy on the field. He drafts them, McCarthy uses them on the field as he wants. If you want to lay the blame, put it in the right place. Who do you think decides the balance of the team when cutdown time comes ? It will be Mike, after consulting with the other coordinators and coaches (and TT will likely have input), but its his call.

Those 7 receivers on this years roster were a poor decision, because before the Bears game Abbrederis had one reception for the season, Davis had none. Only two RBs, at a position where guys get the most crunching contact, was never a good idea.

This feels like an agenda-driven post - you don't like TT so you blame him whenever you can, this time you have shot the wrong target. Sure TT is not totally blameless (might have put a deal together for another guy before the game), but the bulk of blame is on MM.

WHAT??? Thompson puts the team together. Ted decides how many RB's, WR's, QB's, or any other position on the 53. McCarthy has input but Thompson has the final say. Not to mention he hasn't DRAFTED a RB since Lacy. In today's NFL you need more than 2 RB's. especially when one was 265 pounds last year and the other is 30 and fumbles. Nope this is on Ted and Ted and Ted ALONE.

BTW... Al has defended TT while many have questioned him. He's ON the money with this one.

How do you not blame the guy who has final say over all roster moves?? It was TT's fault for not giving MM another option for a RB and it is MM fault to keep lacy out there running like that when you knew dang well he was hurting. I couldn't agree more with this article and hope Murphy cleans house after this year....

our superbowl hopes pretty near ended when we saw what it took to beat jacksonville, let alone how we lost to the vikings, confirmed even more vividly by dallas. forget the superbowl it was not going to happen even with a healthy lacey, though know we maybe look forward to not even making the playoffs, except the quality of the league is so low that who knows.

Not in GB they don't (this ain't no RB, TE or ST coach we're talking about).

TT is safe until he decides to retire to Texas.

He won the Super Bowl in 2010 and the team gets to the playoffs every year.

The Pack will probably even sneak in again this season -- and meekly bow out shy of a Super Bowl for the 6th straight year.

Eddie was a team player, sure he could have but then what. We saw how that went as the game went on. They had the option to bring up Jackson before the game and passed on it. I said at the beginning of the season two RB and an injury away from a disaster. Well were at that spot now, after 60 yrs as a Packer fan at least the got a RB when ours went down in the 1960s but oh no not this time.

Could have been worse...Two quarterbacks injured.

Can't plan for every contingency and two injuries in a position like running back or quarterback where there is generally only two or three on a roster makes it tough to withstand such injuries.

Also, there aren't many 4000 yard quarterbacks, or 1000 yard running blocks waiting in free agency.

Just some very tough luck.

Looks like the perfect storm. Injuries at the wrong time - to the wrong positional groups - with tight roster spots. If a mistake was made, it involved keeping 7 WRs and 2 RBs. Last year we couldn't find enough receivers and basically coasted through with 2 backs.

You roll the dice when it comes to keeping the 3rd back or extra WR. If they let Abby go fans would have been screaming blue murder.

Yeah. What ya gonna do? Has everyone just started watching football last month? Shit happens. Shit happens to every team at every level. Last month I think the Badgers had four of their top five running backs hurt. Players get injured. Players play injured. As a matter of fact, playing injured is part of football lore.

Football is a violent, unpredictable sport. If folks can't handle that aspect maybe football just isn't their sport. Maybe they should take an interest in cricket or something.

"Has any team ever gone into an NFL game with just a single running back and an injured one at that?"

It depends. If you just started watching football last week, the answer is *probably* no, but I'm not going to do all the research to find out. If you have been watching football for over a decade you might remember the Packers being forced to pull Samkon Gado out of who knows where because Ahman Green and Najeh Davenport went down.

Sad! Beyond stupid! Yuge mistake!

Or if you watch football on a regular basis: part of life.

Even if GB had kept a 3rd RB, I would have advocated for a scat back rather than a Crockett type who could handle the pounding as a full time back.

This isn't even remotely like the decision to have RG3 play with a bad knee.

Although it is possible he had this injury, and the severity of it, prior to the Dallas game, the optics of it look really, really bad for the two people running this organization. I think Eddie won't be back in GB this year, and the only chance for next year relies on his acceptance of a reduced, or maybe a one year deal. Whether Shields or Lacy comes off IR in 8 weeks depends on how competitive they are at that point. I expect they will be out of contention by then, but who knows. It could be that neither one of them will be back. They will give Eddie the year to heal, ponder his dedication to the game, and get in shape. Shields I think is done in GB, and most likely football entirely. 5 concussions including college says it's highly unlikely he's back.

If this isn't an emotional reaction post on this blog then I don't what would be...

Why would you blame McCarthy and TT? They are not doctors yet they pay Dr. McKenzie and an entire staff to equip them with the proper knowledge and advice on a player's health. If a guy can go on game day he can go on game day. You think McCarthy has time to keep track of Lacy while trying to manage a game?

Also, keep in mind that Eddie Lacy played an entire season on a bad ankle before. That precedent probably gave the training staff confidence he could work through it. The rigid roster rules of the NFL don't allow them to properly deal with these situations and it's a shame the Packers have to take risks with star players because they don't have roster room. Focus on player safety my a$$

It wasn't the Doctor's decision to go into a game with only one RB and he with an ankle injury. It wasn't the Doctor that decided to carry 27 mediocre receivers and 2 running backs. Again, it's the same rationale that had Rodgers play just two series in the preseason. I think MM has been this way the WHOLE time in Green Bay, it's just with the fire power in the passing game for 3-4 years, even McCarthy's stupid decision making couldn't kill it. That fire power isn't there anymore. It's been reallocated to the rest of the team. And without a two score advantage by the second quarter, there isn't enough brain power on the sidelines to get it done. Rodgers has pulled a few games out of the fire, other wise this has been a sub-.500 team for over a year. Some fans simply refuse to acknowledge it. If the opponents don't have the Packers figured out going into the game, they have them figured out by half time. All MM has is shifting Cobb into the backfield.

Most years the pack has started with a losing record, like 1-2 except for 2011 and last year. The same thing happens on this blog, the same screen names come out and scream bloody murder for someone's head. It would be funny if it wasn't sadly predictable. They are just less patient this year, at 3-2, they sky hasn't fallen yet. Get a grip, take your pills, remember your breathing excersizes. Wax on, wax off

Well, the Lacy decision WAS brought to us by the same brain trust the brought us a five game preseason schedule that had TWO series with Rodgers as the QB (yes, the first one was cancelled, but Rodgers was not slated to play at all in that one either). I've never seen a team so in love with itself, hence the Greek Tragedy trajectory this team is on.

But, this is the McCarthy I've seen pretty much seen the whole time. Having Rodgers throwing to Driver, Jennings, Jones, Finley, and Nelson covered up a LOT of inability by McCarthy. McCarthy had his big laminated sheet the whole time, but all he needed was "Have Rodgers Throw It To The Inevitably Open Guy" on one side, and directions to the Green Bay area donut shops on the other. I could have gone 10-6 with teams from 2009-2012.

But, Thompson and McCarthy (in my mind at McCarthy's behest) let the receiving corp winnow away and more potency was allocated to the running backs and the defense. No problem with the philosophy, but it simply revealed that without Rodgers and five top end receivers, McCarthy has NOTHING in his bag to work with a balanced team. McCarthy gets outwitted by the Jim Caldwell's of the NFL. And I think, for his part, he always was. It was the passing attack fire power, during the height of the "juiced ball" era of Human Pinball NFL, that covered up McCarthy's short comings.

Guys don't want to play for McCarthy. Lacy out of shape, Raji out of shape until his contract year, and since the NFL wasn't going to give him $$$, he quit. Obviously Sitton could see what was coming, ran his mouth, and was shown the door. The team is in disarray and has been for a while. And that is on McCarthy.

Thompson is responsible for POTENCY. And everyone in the NFL eventually comes to some sort of end. But Thompson has a track record of being promoted in Green Bay during Phase I of success in the 90's, becoming Wolf's right hand man. Then he goes and helps build a Super Bowl caliber team in Seattle, and comes back to Green Bay when their fortunes slipped, and built Phase II. And Seattle went back down promptly and the Packers went back up promptly. Thompson has a 20+ year track record. But this the "what have you done for me lately NFL".

McCarthy is responsible for CONSISTENCY. And this team has rarely been consistent. Even in 2010 the team was pushing sideways early in that season. with a lot of injuries. For at least three years I've gotten the stink of the 70's/80's off of this team, even as it was still winning. I made comments to such here and there and received scorn.

So, in the end, I think the Packers have had GM'ing on par with New England, QB'ing on part with New England, but head coaching on par with Tampa Bay or Buffalo. The overall potency and Rodgers made up for a lot of buffoonery. Unfortunately, injuries, lack of caring, hubris, and McCarthy are all coming home to roost.

Anyone still remember the aura of getting Nelson back and the easiest schedule in the league? My wife can attest my trepidation viz a viz McCarthy and I didn't get my hopes up too high. And from what I saw on Sunday, I don't think the Packer offense matches up with the Bears' offense. I at least thought the Packers could out match the Bears. I don't think so now. I think it's going to be a surprisingly high scoring game, and it's going come down to the end. Whoever has the ball last wins. And that's just flat out not good enough.

I'm not sure what I would do if I were TT or MM. Take that back, MM needs to get wild open in the pass offense and throw everything including the kitchen sink to their opponents.
TT, gets the best 53 guys and it only included 2-HB. Starks goes out followed by Lacy being limited with bad ankle. Bang-bang just like that you have 1/2 of a RB. Is Johnson better than Burk? I'm not even sure the coaches know that. TT then gets a guy he's been waiting to get off of waivers. KC makes him trade a draft choice. I'm not sure where the tree is that grows RB and for that matter CBs, but TT can't find it.
I would rather have on the roster very young CB/SS players like Hawkins and Brice then a 3rd/4th string RB for depth. In the long run, the Packers will be better. The offense will have to get by with sub-average RBs. Let's face it, there's no Lacy/Elliot/Peterson out there waiting to be signed.
Hell, hire Baylor's ex-coach and use the run and gun before people learn how to defense it!
