Notebook: Rodgers In Mid-Season Form

Pro Bowl quarterback begins the preseason with a very efficient 11 of 12 performance in the 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

The prevalent line of thinking is that defense is ahead of offense early in training camp. If that's the case, this must be the time when the offense catches up to the defense.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was nearly perfect in his first game action of the season, completing 11 of 12 passes for 159 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions. He completed his first 1o passes without an incompletion.

Rodgers is following up a Pro Bowl season in 2009 in which threw for over 4,400 yards, had a passer rating of over 100.0 and had a 30 to 7 touchdown to interception ratio. If one preseason game is any indication, Rodgers is picking up right where he left off a season ago.

Thanks to a turnover and shoddy defense, the Packers fell behind 14-0 early in the game, but Rodgers was able to hit Greg Jennings on a 25-yard strike late in the first quarter to pull within 14-7.

The first team later tied it up on on a John Kuhn 2-yard touchdown run culminating a 72-yard drive directed by Rodgers highlighted by another long pass to Jennings, this time for 34-yards down the left sideline.

The Browns took the lead once more to go up 21-17, and Rodgers stayed in for one more series in second quarter but stalled before givig way to Matt Flynn.

Arizona redux: The first game of 2010 bore a resemblance to the last game of 2009 (season), at least in terms of the first-string players where the offense put up a bunch of points and the defense couldn't stop anything.

For a defense that was No.1 against the run last year and No. 2 overall, it was a disappointing performance.

In particular, the defense was exposed by quarterback Jake Delhomme's quick decision making to find open receivers. And most of those completions were away from Charles Woodson's side of the field, just like Arizona.

But it didn't end with Delhomme. The Browns were able to go up 14-0 in the first quarter when Seneca Wallace was able to scramble and find Brian Robiskie in back of the end zone after getting separation from safety Nick Collins. Collins had him covered until Robiskie changed directions once Wallace was flushed outside the pocket.

In the second quarter Wallace struck again, this time finding tight end Ben Watson down the seam beating inside linebacker A.J. Hawk in coverage.

Ball security: The first possession of the game was a disappointment for the Packer when Ryan Grant fumbled on the very first play. The Browns recovered deep in Packers territory and only had to drive 13 yards to go up 14-0.

Fumbling is out of character for Grant who had only one fumble the entire 2009 season, and that came following a reception. He went 282 carries without a single fumble, which helped the Packers give up the fewest amount of turnovers in the entire year.

Grant was named to the NFLPA and USA Football's All-Fundamentals team a season ago that noted praised his ability to hang onto the football.

Undrafted rookie Sam Shields didn't do himself any favors when he muffed both a kickoff and a punt return on Saturday evening as well. He was able to recover his botched kickoff, which only resulted in a touchback, but he wasn't as lucky on the punt.

Shields ran upfield to catch a short punt with traffic all around him. He failed to call for a fair catch, wasn't able to cradle the ball and gave possession immediately back to the Browns.

This continues a trend that dates back to offseason OTAs where Shields has struggled to hang onto the football on both punts and kickoffs.

Injury report: Grant left the game in the first quarter after a hit to the head and didn't return. Like all players who get struck on the head, the team will closely monitor his progress.

Tight end Tom Crabtree left the game to have X-rays on on his hand.

Rodgers is an absolute Manimal. I wouldn't trade him for another player in the league.

That 1st string D was a terrible letdown. Got a month to get their shit together (heal quickly Clay, Al, you too Atari).

Pack's draft next year... 1st round, linebacker. 2nd round, linebacker. 3rd round, linebacker.

THAT wouldn't be smart by any means.... get a linebacker and a cornerback maybe.. but like 3 straight linebackers is not what we need IMHO.

1: That fumbling thing is in Grant's head now. He fumbled his first carry in training camp too.

2: Take Shields off punt returns. He is good enough to make the team without that. No biggie.

3: Did you notice that on third and long in FG position they threw to the right side? Think about that. Do you really want Crosby kicking a midrange FG from the right hash?

4: I thought the run blocking totally F'n sucked shit, from what I saw.

Shields did call for a fair catch on that punt, but he shouldn't have gone flying in there like that. Like you said, definitely not doing himself any favors.

Yes he did. But when he got close to fielding the punt with bodies flying around him, he spazzed out (even though he should have realized all he had to do was field the punt, nobody could lay a finger on him), he has zero confidence in himself in the return game. It's painfully obvious.

I am ready to take the adjective "efficient" off of Rodgers, because it tends to imply a quarterback that simply sits back there, makes safe passes and reduces mistakes.

Yes, those all describe Rodgers, but it still bears a certain comparison to he-who-shall-not-be-named. Rodgers is growing into more than just an efficient player, but a playmaker. His touchdown to Jennings could have been pretty risky if he didn't put it on a dime.

He's a complete quarterback. The "efficient" label is now just a part of the total package.

Agreed.

Rodgers 08 = efficient.
Rodgers 09 = great.
Rodgers 10 = League and SB MVP.

I partially disagree, C.D. Rodgers decision making on throws over the last 18 months already matches Favre at his peak (note, I said decision making and not overall body of work). Better than 3/4th's of BF's career is still mared by questionable to poor decision making along with terrible timing on said bad decisions.
