Nolan On His Way, According To PFT

Mike Nolan is currently putting together a defensive staff and preparing to join the Packers as their Defensive Coordinator, according to Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk.

Now, Florio throws a lot of stuff against the wall knowing some of it will stick, and his citing of a league source is reminiscent of his 'league source' who was sure Favre was calling a Wednesday press conference early in the season a few years ago to announce his retirement - until, of course, it was pointed out that Favre had a press conference every Wednesday. But Nolan to the Packers does make a lot of sense. I'll wait until a more reputable news source speaks on this, but I admit to being intrigued/excited.

Well, I think National Football Post is more reputable. Lombardi hears Moss may be the new DC: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/01/notes-from-lombardi-2/

Yeah, read that this afternoon - but Mike Nolan is so much more exciting. ;)

Haha, I totally agree. You know I want Nolan badly. If McCarthy wants a guy to completely run the D, then Nolan is his guy. I also love having ex-head coaches as my Coordinators.

I would rather they go get a 4/3 guy but I wouldn't be terribly unhappy with Nolan. I'd rather have him then Haslett

At the risk of sounding non-PC, just what has Moss ever done that would indicate he can put together a defense that will save MM and TT next year? I'll wait for the specifics. MM and TT have blown their 13-3 cover this year. They need a winning season and the playoffs to ensure future employment with GB. Would that person be Mike Nolan a skilled defensive mastermind (a lousy head coach) or Winston Moss a linebacker coach whose charges performed at a sub-par level all 2008?

Nolan doesn't really run a 3-4 he runs more of a 4-2-5.

Again, I'm no expert, but what do you see with Nolan that has you intrigued/excited? No sarcasm there. I'm looking to learn something. Didn't the SF defense get much better after Singletary took over?? Also, most know I really like MM, but are we really going to have our top 2 guys from a SF program that was horrible, to put it mildly, when they were both there?

And if Pack One is right, and I just read that he is, 4-2-5 is hardly a QB pressure defense. Sounds like more "bend but don't break" to me. Help me understand the excitement

I don't know about the 4-2-5, but assume with me that he runs a 3-4. That will be a few seasons of adjustment. I don't like it. Find the best 4-3 guy you can hire and pull the trigger. This team is in a terrible division and should win now.

I know Nolan was a stud in Baltimore and all but why could he not improve SF in 3.5 years? To Andrew's point, I don't want to be sitting here this time next year saying "well, the defense started to gel near the end of the year so we'll be better in 2010" Maybe it's too hard to do as a HC, I don't know. I mean Wade Phillips is a pretty good coordinator but a horrible head coach. Just trying to connect the dots in my mind and having a hard time as you can tell
