No Second Level

No Second Level

A Running back's best friend is his fullback leaving him somewhere to run.  How will the Cowboys running game fare without their starting fullback Deon Anderson?

Anderson was injured in the Monday night game against the Eagles. He had surgery during the week and will be out at least two weeks, and obviously missing the Packers game Sunday night.

The Cowboys have a good running back group and a very talented offensive line, but missing a fullback like Anderson could be devastating. This injury might effect the game bigger than the Roy Williams or Atari Bigby injuries. Anderson is a talented fullback, and the Packers need to take advantage of it.

There is no reason Barber should have a good day. There were no reasons BEFORE the injury, and now there are definitely none. The Packers held the Lions to under 50 rushing yards. The run defense is solid, and they’ll need to be. No excuses here.

You need your fullback to make that key block past the line of scrimmage so you can make your cut and take it to the second level. There better be no second level in this game. When Barber hits the line of scrimmage, I want to see his blocker being pushed right into him. I want to see Barber try to make the most out of it and cut another direction, only to find a defensive lineman filling his assigned gap.

There is no reason that the Cowboys shouldn’t be a one dimensional passing team in the 2nd half of this game. This game will likely come down to Romo and his receivers against our passing defense, and that is something that I can most definitely live with.

I’ve talked with a lot of Cowboys fans this week, and most of them dismiss the Anderson injury as a big deal. It’s not a big deal or ANY type of deal to them. I guess when you have Owens, Romo, and the best O-line in the NFL, it’s easy to ignore and appreciate a good fullback. We’ll see just how big or little a deal it is Sunday night.

This could be an interesting subplot to Sunday night's game. But I'm not sure what percentage of plays the Cowboys have their fullback on the field, and I don't know who Anderson's replacement is. I remember how much it hurt the Packers' offense when William Henderson got hurt early in that playoff loss at St. Louis that ended the 2001 season. He was the only fullback on the roster at the time. At least the Cowboys are able to game plan knowing they are without Anderson. And with the talent they have on offense, they may be able to compensate for his loss. We'll see.

Yep, we'll see.

Just looking for stuff nobody is talking about really. Yeah, I'm reaching a bit. Good thing the game is tomorrow!!!!!!!!
