NFL Picks: Week Three
Aaron Nagler's picks for Week Three of the 2011 NFL Season.
By PackerAaron
Last Week: 14-2
Season: 23-9
Jacksonville at Carolina
The Blaine Gabbert Era gets under way on the road in Charlotte. Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio is a complete train wreck when it comes to dealing with quarterbacks. Its like he's still trying to punish them from his days as a linebacker. Gabbert should have been the starter coming out of camp. Carolina's first round pick quarterback was and is rolling.
San Francisco at Cincinnatti
A lot is being made this week of Tony Romo's heroics against the 49ers, which is masking talk of what was pretty much a total meltdown by the Niners defense. Cincinnati has shown surprising life through the first two weeks of this young 2011 season. I think Andy Dalton follows Romo in leading a comeback against San Francisco.
Miami at Cleveland
Dolphins players are already being asked if they are 100% behind head coach Tony Sporano after getting torched by the Patriots and Texans. Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur saw his team show some life in Indianapolis and second year signal caller Colt McCoy is playing well. But Miami have been road warriors under Sparano and I think they respond well to early public pressure on their coach this week.
New England at Buffalo
I really, really, really want to pick Buffalo here. But I can't. While I think this will be one of two crazy, wild, fun shoot-out type games this weekend (the other being Houston at New Orleans) I think I have to take Tom Brady and New England over Ryan Fitzpatrick and Buffalo. But I really hope I'm wrong.
New York Giants at Philadelphia
Michael Vick reportedly practiced yesterday and is in-line to start Sunday against the Giants. I don't think this one will be close. The one hope the Giants have is that their talented defensive front, led by Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul, can overwhelm the Eagles' mediocre offensive line. But even that won't be enough. Philadelphia - and it won't be close.
Detroit at Minnesota
The Lions are favored in Minnesota for the first time in over 20 years. The talent differential between the two teams is staggering - in favor of the Lions. The one chance the Vikings have is if either Jared Allen and/or Brian Robison can wreak enough havoc against left tackle Jeff Backus to disrupt Matthew Stafford's game. Outside of that, Detroit should dominate.
Houston at New Orleans
The other should-be-a-shootout-so-it-will-probably-be-a-defensive-battle game on the docket this weekend. Houston's defense looks improved under coordinator Wade Philips - but has faced Kerry Collins and Chad Henne. This visit to New Orleans will be a wake up call.
Denver at Tennessee
Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw for 358 yards last week against the Ravens. Besides Kenny Britt (who should play on Sunday) - who was he throwing to? Even more remarkably, the Titans won with limited contribution for the second week in a row from Chris Johnson. The Broncos will try to lean on Willis McGahee in the ground game and pick their spots with quarterback Kyle Orton - but it won't be enough. Tennessee in a close one.
New York Jets at Oakland
The Jets pulverized a Jaguars team that could do little right last week. Now, they fly across the country to face a team that blew a 17-0 lead against the high-flying Bills. (Did I just type that?) Oakland's ground game is no joke, and I think it does just enough to keep quarterback Jason Campbell from having to do too much against Revis and company. Oakland in a surprise.
Baltimore at St. Louis
The Ravens are still trying to figure out how the Titans beat them. Maybe it was the old "emotional letdown" after the beat down they administered to the arch rival Steelers. The Rams can move the football - but can't seem to score. Baltimore should be able to limit what St. Louis wants to do on offense. Ray Rice is a complete mismatch for the Rams' linebackers. And if the Ravens go with multiple wideouts, they'll end up with Lee Evans on Al Harris. Yikes.
Kansas City at San Diego
Is the Chiefs' season already over? After two weeks? Quite possibly. Having lost the most talented player on each side of the ball for the season, Kansas City is left to wonder how the wheels came off so fast. San Diego takes out their frustrations from losing to the Patriots on their division rival.
Atlanta at Tampa Bay
The Falcons showed a lot of guts in their comeback last Sunday against the Eagles. The Buccaneers showed a lot of guts in their comeback last Sunday against the Vikings. These are two un-even teams with loads of issues bubbling underneath, just waiting to explode into full-blown problems. The thinking here is that Josh Freeman and Tampa Bay paper over those issues another week.
Arizona at Seattle
The Cardinals' defense has struggled early but a trip to Seattle is just what the doctor ordered. The Seahawks are a putrid mess of a football team. Why did it take two regular season games to demote Aaron Curry when it should have been done in preseason? And the decision to start Tarvaris Jackson? Beyond baffling - unless you think the Seahawks are Sucking For Luck. Arizona in a blowout.
Green Bay at Chicago
Da Bears Still Suck, Da Bears Still Suck, Da Bears Still Suck, Da Bears Still Suck. They really, really, really, really, really, really suck - yes the Bears. Still. Suck.
Pittsburgh at Indianapolis
Do they really have to play this game? NBC execs won't be the only ones cursing what promises to be a mind-numbingly boring, totally lopsided game. Pittsburgh -by a lot.
Washington at Dallas
Word is that Tony Romo will start a week after injuring two ribs and puncturing a small hole in his lung. Very impressive Mr. Romo. His counterpart, Rex Grossman, is busy rehabilitating his career, throwing for 596 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first two games as the Redskins' starter. Dallas is a Romo-induced meltdown away from being 2-0, and they handle the upstart Redskins in a classic NFC East showdown.

You've got a typo:
"Titans won with limited contribution for the second week in a row from Charles Johnson"

Doh. Thanks. Fixed.

No way Miami wins, specially if they have to play for Sparano. When asked how to fix what was going on, he honestly said "I don't know". You really think the players are going to play harder to that guy?

Can you talk to brian? Make sure he is ok? He publicly stated he likes the bares to win outright...poor fella must be going through some sort of crisis.
I have cleveland winning and the queens winning (just because I can't grasp the lions being 3-0), other than that my picks are the same.

Okay, on a completely different subject.
You people (especially you, Fitz) gotta check it out the new season of blue mountain state. It is absolutely hilarious. The first episode's title: dic picks. It is so hilarious to the point I gotta post this in a completely random post.

They even had a favre reference in that episode. Love that show, bummed radon isn't back this season, that guy was funny.

Yeah, he was hilarious! Yeah, watched them both. There's already 2 new episodes of this new season, and the guy that had cancer is back! The first one was the Favre one, about dick picks, the second is about Thad being suspended by the "ncaa" for being busted with cocaine in a party and the passing of the "patch" of the captain to Alex.
Really am not a big series guy, but this one and Archer are absolutely hilarios.

LOL, love Archer too. Thad makes that show but I really like the small amount of scenes the kicker is in too, just a hilarious character... that opening scene where Thad's explaining to Coach what happened but they showed what really happened with all that blow was just classic.
