Career Notes:

White hit the ground running at LSU, starting 11 of his 13 games as a freshman with the Tigers. He was awarded All-SEC honors as a freshman, and made it to third-team Freshman All-America. He snagged two picks in his freshman campaign.

White flexed stamina and durability over the course of the next three season, starting every game at cornerback from his sophomore season (2014) on. His resume of opponents includes Amari Cooper in 2014, who he held to a respectable 10 yards per catch. He also held up against standouts like Ole Miss’s Laquon Treadwell and Texas A&M’s Josh Reynolds.

In terms of awards his senior year, White brought home the bacon. He was a consensus All America player, First Team All-SEC, First Team All-America for the American Football Coaches Association, and was a finalist for the Thorpe Award. It’s hard to find the combination of experience and success White has at the age of 22.

In four years of play, White didn’t have any injuries that kept him out of games, but sat out of the Senior Bowl after tweaking his ankle in team drills.

Analysis:

Man Coverage 3.0/5.0: White was trusted to island-cover a lot of receivers in single-high and zero-coverage and often took care of business. Against size (Laquon Treadwell, Josh Reynolds De’Runnya Wilson), he was exposed. It may unfairly weight in people’s minds, but De’Runnya Wilson’s goal line catch with White wrapped around his waist is telling of the risk of putting him one-on-one against a larger receiver. There are a few too many cases of White in press coverage in which he stumbles out of breaks, allows inside releases, and once even getting turned all the way around against Texas A&M in 2016. He does, of course, have a steep catalogue of plays in which he covered well in man, and he didn’t log 14 passes defensed in 2016 by being a slouch.

Zone Coverage 4.0/5.0: White might be the most zone-proficient corner in this draft class. In cover 2, he was at home, seemingly tracking three receivers simultaneously at times. He disrupts crossing routes with his mere presence, and against Wisconsin (2016) wisely abandoned a far-side zone to help the side of the field he saw a rollout play moving to. His reaction in the zone is quicker and he is a stone wall to any passes coming his way.

Against the Run 3.5/5.0: White’s proficiency in the zone game translates to run and screen plays as well. He seems to have a knack for eye-ing past the receiver he’s covering into the backfield to complicate run plays. He has a small frame that stronger receivers might be able to throw around more easily than other corners in this class, but he remains a pesky run defender.

Speed/Quickness 3.75/5.0: White showed solid recovery speed when receivers separated from him, so when he gave up catches, he often came down with tackles. It’s tough to take him out of a play because of his combination of vertical and lateral speed. His feet looked a little slow at times, and he would occasionally stumble out of breaks trying to mirror receivers.

Impact Play Ability 3.5/5.0: White’s interceptions are easy to dismiss, but his passes defensed cannot be ignored. There are also multiple times you see quarterbacks looking to his side of the field on a zone and not wanting to test the seasoned veteran. The ability to cut off entire thirds of the field needs to be acknowledged. Also, though he is a little slimmer than a team might hope for in run support, he is disruptive and will be a factor in run plays, even if he isn’t making tackles.

Summary: White is a serviceable corner in a class of really talented corners. He will be one of the better known quantities in zone, and will be tested in man. His 40-yard dash and his 3-cone confirm his ability to recover in instances when he does get beat. He will definitely be a solid nickel corner by Week 1 of this season, and shows flashes of technique that could ease his transition to a more solid perimeter spot.

If Drafted by the Packers:

Micah Hyde just left town for Buffalo, and Green Bay’s hemorrhaging in the secondary continues. With a late pick in the first round, White may be the best corner available and taking him at the 29 spot isn’t a reach. If he slides into Hyde’s spot at the nickel, he is a trustworthy defender who would take some pressure off of Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins outside. Depending on how quickly he develops, he may even swap places with Rollins on the outside. While he is young, he does have a wealth of experience under his belt. Coming from LSU, White is not new to either the spotlight or high expectations.
