Nance Cleared, Will "Compete" With Starks
Dimitri Nance was back at practice yesterday, where Mike McCarthy said he and fellow rookie running back James Starks would "compete".

Interesting choice of words from Mike McCarthy when asked about Dimitri Nance being back at practice and what that meant for James Starks' chance at being active on Snday.
Nance was cleared to practice yesterday after he suffered a concussion in the Atlanta game. During his Monday press conference, McCarthy had indicated that Starks "better be" ready because there would possibly be an opportunity for him to be active on Sunday with Nance's situation up in the air.
But now, with Nance back in the mix, McCarthy and his staff are apparently going to use the "practice environment" (McCarthy's phrase) to gather as much information on Starks as they can before making a decision between the two rookie running backs.
Dimitri has completed the process and practiced today, and we’ll have Dimitri and James pretty much compete throughout the week, and we’ll address that at the end of the week.
I think for James Starks to play in the game, you have to trust your practice environment because that’s all the preparation he has. That’s the facts. If James is ready to play, if we feel that he is ready to play and contribute to us winning the game, that’s when he’ll play, and that’s the bottom line.
For his part, Starks seems to believe that he'll be active on Sunday regardless of what happens with Nance. As he told reporters after practice, he has been working on special teams for the first time since coming off the physically unable to perform list. In fact, he reportedly spent an extra 30 minutes with Special Teams coach Shawn Slocum after practice on Thursday going over questions he had for Slocum.
From Starks:
Just plays, the man I’d have to cover if different situations occur, what I’m supposed to do in those situations. We went in-depth on everything, cleared my mind a little better, now I know who I have, I know my assignments a lot better.
As McCarthy often says, the best route onto the game day active roster for young players is through special teams. It would seem, regardless of Dimitri Nance's status, James Starks could finally get on the football field on Sunday.

Wouldn't mind seeing him return kickoffs. Shields could be lightening in a bottle, but its seems like either boom or bust with him so far.
Wonder if Starks could return punts.

Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing him COVER kicks. Maybe they see a physical player with speed who can replace some of the special teamers we have lost. Go for it, Starks. I'd love to see him on special teams Sunday.

I'm a Starks fan boy. Really hope he is active Sunday. I just want to see the guy on the field. Even if it is just special teams. He just needs to get back to playing in football games.

Hopefully he can tackle on the kickoff coverage team

Obviously McCarthy and staff see something in the guy if they not only activated him from the PUP list but are keeping him around in practice. Maybe McCarthy saying "he's not worried about the running game" is because he knows what Starks will bring to the offense.
Maybe Starks will bring a spark and eventually start! Sorry, just got done watching 8 mile...

Karma's Jests: an anagram for James Starks.
That can't be good.

Even though I believe in Karma I feel he'll do so well that next years picket fence will read:
"The Sparks from Starks is not a lark".
Just kidding. I do want to see what he has to offer this year so he's not an unknown come training camp.

Training Camp is EXACTLY when you want to introduce unknown variables- not in week 13 while you're in the midst of a potential playoff run!
Remember, if an unknown quantity is activated, a known one is being listed as inactive. Be careful what you wish for.
I sincerely hope Starks succeeds, but I'm not ignorant to the fact he has a lot of things going against him, and while his activation could be exciting and might be a revelation, it's also a shot in the dark and filled with pit falls.

Well said !

I'm pretty sure this "known quantity" hasn't done anything worth keeping active anyway. And it's not like were going to run the James-starks-wildcat all game with him or something(Although I'd like to see it). Knowing the coach he will get 1-2 touches if he's lucky. If he runs each of those for 20+ yards he will get more. He's more likely to get targeted with a few passes. Nance got thrown at but he cant get open/catch. The time is now, were playing our 2 easiest games the next 2 weeks. Other wise cut him because you should have put him on the IR and we all know the neigh sayers wont want to see him after missing 3 YEARS!

No one is nay saying, I have been on record as saying I think Starks has a lot of talent and brings something to the table we desperately need- he's got the skills to be an excellent receiver out of the back field.
However, I'm not worried that we won't know what we have in him come training camp. That's what training camp is for- finding out what you have.
I am as interested in seeing what Starks has as the next guy. But If it means forcing a guy into a game situation who isn't ready to protect Rodgers yet, or isn't ready to take a beating physically yet, or isn't ready to carry and PROTECT the ball in a regular season game yet, I can wait as long as it takes.
Think about how far back missing substantial time from training camp sets most rookie players back.. Now imagine you're not just a rookie, but a rookie who hasn't even played collegiate level football for almost 2 years. You haven't even experienced a lick of a Pro training camp, and you've only even practiced with the team for less than a month. That's not a lot of prep.
I really do hope when/if he gets he chance he blows up. But I'm not holding my breath for that to happen this year, and I'm not going to be impatient every week and take the stance the Packers need to press him into service.

Hard to understand all the negativism & sarcasm when talking about JS lining up & taking a few handoffs ..... GB is a team that starts (basically) two un-drafted FAs at nickel & OLB, has another un-drafted FA at CB bound for the Pro-Bowl, a cast-off who starts at safety who's playing well & many other unknowns who in their role have held the fort to this point .....
JS is, at present, an unknown ..... What is known is that the rushing attack has been woefully inadequate since Grant went down with little chance of improvement using the 'vaunted' trio of BJ, Kuhn & Nance ..... It just won't take much from Starks to surpass the effectiveness of the running game.

All players that haven't been absent from football in 1 1/2 years and that have attended the offseason program...
The sarcasm isn't about Starks playing. Is about people thinking that he's the savior and should start, based on highlights of youtube.

Great point made earlier, that Starks won't have to accomplish much in order to be a big part in our running game, especially since our trio of Kuhn, Jackson and Nance have a lot left to be desired, has a chance to be our X-Factor when we make the playoffs, if he shows something before then
